Which Vitamins Shouldn't Be Taken in the Morning?

Many of us try to build healthy habits, and taking vitamins and supplements with breakfast seems like an easy win. But did you know that the timing of your supplement intake can significantly impact its effectiveness and even lead to unwanted side effects? Certain vitamins and minerals, when taken in the morning, might not only be less beneficial but could also disrupt your day with issues like drowsiness or an upset stomach

Here's a look at three supplements you might want to rethink taking with your morning coffee, along with practical tips to get the most out of them.

Iron: A Mineral That Needs a Head Start

Iron is crucial for preventing iron-deficiency anemia, which can cause fatigue and weakness. However, taking an iron supplement on an empty stomach can lead to nausea and vomiting. While having it with breakfast might seem like a solution, it's not that simple.

The Coffee Conflict:
Coffee contains compounds called polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acid, which can bind with iron during digestion, making it harder for your body to absorb this essential mineral. The same goes for tea. It's best to wait at least an hour or two after your morning coffee or tea before taking an iron supplement.

Maximize Absorption: To enhance iron absorption, take it with a source of Vitamin C, such as a glass of orange juice.

Timing is Key: If you can tolerate it, taking iron on an empty stomach is ideal. If not, a small snack is better than a large meal. Avoid taking iron with calcium-rich foods or supplements, or with antacids, as these can also interfere with absorption.

Magnesium: The Relaxation Mineral
Magnesium, particularly in the form of magnesium glycinate, is well-known for its calming effects on the nervous system, helping to relax both muscles and mind. This makes it a popular choice for improving sleep quality.

Timing for Your Goals: If your primary goal for taking magnesium is to enhance sleep, it's best to take it in the evening, about an hour or two before bed.

Morning Option: However, if you're taking magnesium for other reasons, such as to support energy production or manage daytime stress, a morning dose can be beneficial. In this case, consider magnesium malate, which is known for its energy-supporting properties.

Take with Food: To avoid potential digestive issues like diarrhea, it's generally recommended to take magnesium with a meal or snack.

Vitamin A: The Fat-Soluble Friend

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it needs dietary fat to be properly absorbed by the body. Without fat, you risk losing out on the full benefits of this nutrient, which is vital for vision health and has antioxidant properties.

Pair with Healthy Fats: To ensure you're getting the most from your vitamin A supplement, always take it with a meal that contains healthy fats. Good sources include avocado, eggs, nuts, seeds, and full-fat yogurt.

Other Fat-Soluble Vitamins: This advice also applies to other fat-soluble vitamins, including Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K.

Other Supplement Interactions to Keep in Mind

It's not just about the time of day; some vitamins and minerals can compete for absorption.

Calcium and Other Minerals: Calcium can interfere with the absorption of iron, zinc, and magnesium. If you take these supplements separately, it's best to space them out by a couple of hours.

Vitamin C and B12: High doses of Vitamin C can reduce the absorption of Vitamin B12. Take these supplements at least two hours apart.

Zinc and Copper: High doses of zinc can interfere with copper absorption.

The Bottom Line

Taking daily vitamins and minerals can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but timing and food pairings matter. To get the full benefits of your supplements and avoid potential side effects, consider adjusting your routine based on the information above. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, it's best to consult with your healthcare provider to create a supplement plan that's right for you.

The Relationship between Antacids and the Risk of Stroke

Many people of different ages often suffer from heartburn which is caused by rising stomach acid and whose main symptom is a burning sensation in the chest and throat. This occurs because of physical factors such as pregnancy, defects in the esophageal sphincter that do not prevent the rise of acid, or because of eating fatty foods and drinking carbonated beverages. The burning sensation is usually intolerable, which causes many people to take antacid medications, either prescription or OTC, and assume that they have treated the problem.

However, in a recent study it was found that these drugs significantly increase the risk of ischemic stroke, a fact that sheds a completely new light on the dangers of using them. In the next article, you’ll learn more about the findings of this study, and also a few natural and effective ways to deal with heartburn that will prevent you from having to reach for the medicine shelf.

How do antacids work?

As mentioned above, heartburn is caused by the rise of gastric acid to the esophagus that causes a burning sensation in the chest area. Antacids used to treat heartburn which are included in the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI's) group, treat the problem by reducing acid secretion in the stomach so that it can’t rise up through the esophagus. There are few differences between the various antacids, but most of them work in this method and contain Proton Pump Inhibitors.

What is the possible risk of taking antacids?

According to a study, these common drugs are not as safe to use as they were thought to be. During the course of the study, doctors analyzed medical records of nearly 245,000 people  aged 57, who underwent an endoscopy procedure to find the causes of digestive difficulties and stomach aches. When the subjects returned to follow-up tests after the procedure, 9,500 of them had an ischemic stroke caused by a disturbance in blood flow to the brain.
A researcher and his colleagues examined whether patients with stroke took one of four common PPI drugs: omeprazole, pantoprazole (Protonix), lansoprazole (Prevacid) and esomeprazole (Nexium).

The results of the comprehensive study

The researcher and his colleagues found that there was a link between taking one of these drugs and an increased risk of stroke, since people who regularly took these drugs were 21 percent more likely to have ischemic stroke than non-users. Furthermore, subjects taking high-dose PPIs had a 30 to 94% chance of having the stroke of the type described.
These results are preliminary and diagnostic, but there appears to be a high correlation between taking antacids and the risk of ischemic stroke. Therefore, if you are taking PPI’s regularly or considering doing so, you may want to consult your doctor to avoid excessive amounts or to consider alternative treatment options.

Natural heartburn treatments

The temptation to reach for a pill when you feel heartburn coming on is great, but as mentioned, there may be several health risks. In order to avoid this problem, and still treat the heartburn, you can make use of a number of different and varied methods while also changing your diet. Just pick one of the following natural ways to soothe heartburn and eliminate the need to take medicine:
Eating bananas - This tasty yellow fruit contains natural acids which work against those that are formed in the stomach which rise to the esophagus. It is recommended to eat one ripe banana a day to enjoy its long-term benefits and to reduce heartburn.
Drink soda water – Baking soda has many wonderful benefits one of which is calming heartburn. This is due to the fact that baking soda has a basic acidity level (pH = 7), so it contradicts the acid in the stomach and neutralizes it. In order to enjoy this natural solution, add between 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 200 ml of water, mix until dissolved and drink. Drink no more than 3 ½ teaspoons in 24 hours.
Protect the body with aloe vera juice - The wonderful aloe vera plant helps not only to soothe sunburn but also burning caused by a rise in gastric acid. This is due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the juice produced from the plant, which calms the irritation in the stomach during heartburn. If you experience heartburn, try drinking a glass of aloe vera juice to prevent the condition from getting worse.
Treat yourself with Chamomile Tea - This fragrant tea helps greatly in cases of digestive difficulties and heartburn. Drinking a cup of chamomile tea between half an hour and an hour before bedtime will help relieve the inflammation and irritation in the stomach that lead to heartburn. Moreover, chamomile relaxes the body and mind and therefore contributes to the decrease in tension that also causes heartburn.
Apple Cider Vinegar  - Apple cider vinegar is used to treat stomach acid buildup, as ironic as that may sound. The cider helps digestion by breaking down fats, despite the acidity factor. Mix one or two teaspoons of the apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink it before meals, or whenever you feel an acid reflux attack coming on.

Prolonged use of antacids harms kidneys

Recent global studies suggesting that the prolonged use of widely prescribed anti-acidity pills to treat “gas” and heartburn might be linked to long-term kidney damage, acute renal disease and chronic kidney disease have sparked fresh debate in the medical community here.

Though a few initial reports about the association of these drugs — also called PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) — with kidney disease have been published in reputed international medical journals over the last couple of years, it is only now that there are studies suggesting that it’s more serious and linked to both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, doctors told.

Also, since these reports are mostly restricted to nephrology journals and limited to only specialists, many physicians may not be really aware of these adverse effects. Increasing concerns about these drugs could be the reason their safety profile was discussed at the Annual Conference of Nephrologists and at an Association of Physicians conference.

PPIs rank among the top-10 prescribed classes of drugs and are commonly used to treat acid reflux, indigestion, and peptic ulcers. They are prescribed across specialities, from orthopaedics and cardiology to internal medicine and surgery. A US-based nephrologist, spoke about the drug’s risks at the annual conference recently. He told “PPIs should be ideally prescribed in the approved indications, if possible for less than eight weeks. Beyond this, if a patient is on PPIs, kidney function and magnesium levels need monitoring.”

Most patients do not know about side-effects like CKD (chronic kidney disease) as in the early stages CKD from any cause usually shows no symptom., said a nephrologist. Though no advisory has been issued against the medicine, the Dr. said drug regulatory authorities will be informed.

5 easy ways to soothe teeth sensitivity

Oral health is a window to a person’s overall health and well-being and amongst that teeth sensitivity is one of the main problems that can range from slight discomfort to severe pain — so make sure you are taking care of it properly.A Periodontist, shares some simple tips to ease teeth sensitivity:

  • The quickest and easiest way would be to switch to a specialised toothpaste formulated to take care of sensitive teeth.
  • Change your brushing habits. If you’re not using a soft toothbrush and if you’re scrubbing your teeth vigorously, you might worsen the condition. Hard brushing can wear away the enamel, increasing the sensitivity in your teeth.
  • Keep a check on acidic food and drinks as they might wear down the teeth enamel. Limit the consumption of these foods and drinks, and try to brush about 20 minutes after eating them (not earlier, or the brushing may hurt your enamel further).
  • Teeth whitening treatments or alcohol-based mouthwash can make things even worse, so steer clear of them.
  • In case your problem continues even after these changes then you must visit your dentist.
  • Individuals with gastric activity problems or gastric reflux should be treated with appropriate antacids as acid reflux leads to demineralization action resulting in dental enamel erosion.
  • People who have parafunctional habits such as teeth clenching or bruxism are advised to wear a night guard.
