Burping Too Much? These 4 Reasons Could Be the Cause

A little burping here and there is normal. Burping represents the backwards passage of air from the stomach or esophagus up through the mouth. This air is typically swallowed when we breathe or eat. When there's a sudden release of air into the esophagus that causes it to stretch, there is a reflux that allows the upper esophagus to relax, enabling us to belch and release the air.

But if persistent bouts of belching occur, take note of what your body is trying to communicate. If burping continues for a long period of time, or it gets worse it may mean that there's something else going on that may require a visit to the doctor.

A number of serious conditions can cause you to bring up unusual amounts of wind including GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease - a condition in which the contents of your stomach back up into your throat, small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO), a condition in which excess bacteria develops in the small intestine and creates extra gas that passes through the gastrointestinal tract. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS is another cause as is lactose intolerance, gastroparesis (impairment in the motility of the stomach, which is common in diabetics), or hiatal hernia (when part of the stomach slides up into the chest, above the diaphragm).

So, to figure out why you're belching on the regular, you need to find out whether you are experiencing it hand-in-hand with other symptoms that are typical symptoms of another illness. Other partner symptoms that you should be weary of include:

Vomiting
Vomiting for no reason is a worrisome symptom. Yet when it's teamed up with incessant burping it's a clear sign that a more serious problem could be behind those belches. As it could indicate a condition like acid reflux or a hiatal hernia. It may also be an indication of a sign of obstruction either in the stomach or the small intestine as well as other benign conditions like an ulcer. If this is something that you experience frequently let your doctor know about it just to be on the safe side.

Unexpected weight loss and loss of appetite
There could be a reason behind losing weight suddenly. In fact unexpected weight loss is often perceived to be alarming. Until proven otherwise, it should be presumed to be due to a malignant (cancerous) process. This occurs because cancer develops from rapidly dividing mutant cells, which require high energy to divide so quickly.

They use the energy and nutrients that we would normally use, which leads to weight loss. If you're burping more than usual and your appetite seems to have come to a halt, decreased appetite could indicate inflammation, infection, ulcers or cancer. In the case where these conditions are ruled out, sudden weight loss could be a sign of severe depression.

Constipation or diarrhea
There's nothing alarming about the occasional clogged pipe, but if constipation occurs more frequently, accompanied by other symptoms like burping, consult your doctor. New, onset constipation, or stool associated with bleeding, severe bloating and pain, vomiting, belching or weight loss may be a sign of a bowel obstruction, such as a tumor and scar tissue or twisted colon. Most of the time, patients with constipation have IBS, which is associated with increased gas, causing belching.

Going to the bathroom too much can be just as concerning as not going to the bathroom at all. Diarrhea can also occur due to IBS, but if associated with other symptoms, it may be due to celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis - all of which can also result in an increase in belching.

Abdominal distension
Abdominal distension is the expansion of the abdomen beyond its usual size. It's typically the result of food fermenting in your intestine, which produces excess gas, causing more burping. Persistent or severe distension can also be a sign of an obstruction or severe food allergy or intolerance such as gluten or fructose. If you're burping a lot and your tummy feels uncomfortable, speak to a physician to find out the cause.

Common Causes and Treatments for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD), occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (or valve to the stomach) doesn’t open and close properly. An faulty lower esophageal sphincter (or LES) will trigger the overproduction of stomach acids into the esophagus (heartburn). The presence of a stomach abnormality (or hiatal hernia) can also cause the LES to continually allow stomach acid up into the esophagus. This triggers the painful yet well known symptoms of heartburn—including burping, nausea, hiccups, bloating, sore throat, and burning food regurgitation.

Acid reflux is typically diagnosed when GERD symptoms occur more than twice a week. Of course, acid reflux can be exacerbated if patients:
● Are overweight
● Suffer from Dysphagia (narrowing esophagus)
● Smoke
● Eat acidic inducing foods (i.e., onions, fatty foods, garlic, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus)
● Lie down following meals
● Tend to overeat
● Snack right before bedtime
● During pregnancy
● Regularly take muscle relaxers, blood pressure medications, aspirin, or ibuprofen
● Drink gassy beverages (i.e., beer, carbonated drinks, coffee)

In many cases, doctors will recommend a combination of lifestyle changes combined with over-the-counter medications to treat GERD:
1. Lifestyle changes
Many patients with acid reflux significantly reduce their symptoms by quitting smoking, eating smaller, frequent meals to prevent heartburn, losing weight, avoiding tight or compressive clothing, and consuming meals at least 3 hours before lying down.

2. Over the counter antacids
Several over the counter remedies can do their part to help reduce acid reflux symptoms. Many health professionals recommend daily use of Riopan, Rolaids, Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, and Mylanta to help neutralize stomach acid and soothe GERD. However, keep in mind that long term antacid use can cause diarrhea or constipation.

3. Prescription medications
For chronic, severe GERD, doctors often prescribe a combination of drugs to reduce stomach acids (i.e., H2 blockers like Zantac), stomach coaters (i.e., foaming agents like Gaviscon), and Proton pump inhibitors, like Prilosec and Nexium).

4. GERD surgery
When over the counter remedies, lifestyle changes, and prescription medications are unable to provide relief from acid reflux, doctors may recommend surgery in extreme cases when GERD is impacting daily life. The common surgeries conducted as a last result on extreme GERD cases include:

● Fundoplication surgery, which creates an artificial valve by making a tiny incision in the abdomen and wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the LES to repair a hiatal hernia.
● LINX surgery, surgically implants a LINX ring around the outside of the lower end of the esophagus to strengthen the LES and block stomach content from regurgitating back up into the esophagus.

A Comprehensive Guide to Abdominal Pain

Pain is your body’s way of signaling to your mind that something is wrong with it. And while teeth sensitivity most likely means that you should lay off ice cream, when it comes to your belly, things get way more complicated. The belly, also known as the abdomen, is where many of your essential organs sit. Pain in the abdomen could point to a variety of conditions: it might be that extra ice cream upsetting your stomach, or muscle pain after an intense ab workout, but it may also be an issue with your liver, cardiovascular system or reproductive organs. The location of the pain can tell you a lot about the possible underlying issue, which is why we have created this abdominal map that will help you understand the reason for that annoying belly pain.

Central Upper Abdomen

Abdominal Pain Map
This is the part of your body where most of your stomach sits, so when you experience pain only in this part of your belly, it generally indicates a stomach issue. Many of these conditions produce very similar symptoms and require medical tests to be diagnosed.
  • Gastritis is an inflammation of your stomach lining. The main symptom of gastritis is upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, loss of appetite and heartburn.
  • Hiatal hernias are another stomach-related issue that makes you experience acid reflux and food “balling up” before entering the stomach, which causes abdominal and chest pains while eating.
  • Though rare, gastroparesis may be another cause for upper abdominal pain, especially if you also feel full all the time, even though you didn’t eat for a while. Other symptoms include heartburn and constant nausea.
  • Burning upper abdominal pain that improves after eating, and often starts after taking aspirin, drinking alcohol, orange juice, or coffee may be a symptom of a peptic ulcer.
  • Pericarditis, unlike the other diseases we have discussed in this section, is a heart disease. Though not a main symptom, it can cause chest pain radiating into the abdomen and back that worsens when lying down.

Right Upper Abdomen

Abdominal Pain Map

When you feel pain that starts in the right upper abdomen, it is particularly difficult to specify the reason, as it can indicate problems with the liver, gallbladder or the upper intestinal tract. The quality and persistence of the pain may hint to a specific condition.
  • Cholecystitis (an inflamed gallbladder). The main symptom is a sudden sharp pain in the upper right side of your belly that can persist for hours. It has a tendency to spread toward the right shoulder. The painful area feels tender, and breathing deeply worsens the pain.
  • Gallstones may cause pain after eating fried and fatty foods that often ceases after a few hours.
  • Cramping, sudden abdominal pain, and tenderness in the right upper part of your tummy that worsens when you consume fatty foods or alcohol may indicate liver damage, which may due to different conditions, such as hepatitis, alcohol abuse or cirrhosis.
  • The symptoms of duodenitis, the inflammation of the upper small intestine that is adjacent to the stomach are similar to that of gastritis, but the pain can also be experienced in the upper right side under the ribs.

    Left and Right Upper Abdomen

    Abdominal Pain Map

When you experience pain in the top right and/or left sides of the abdomen and back, it is usually due to some lung condition, such as pneumothorax, pleurisy or pneumonia. It can be sudden and one-sided in pneumothorax, or constant, dull and aching in pneumonia and pleurisy. Abdominal pain is by no means the primary symptom of these conditions, however, shortness of breath, fever and fast heart rate are.

    Entire Upper Abdomen

    Abdominal Pain Map

When the origin of pain is difficult to pinpoint, or it spreads throughout the entire upper part of your belly, it can be due to a variety of different conditions.
  • Not an uncommon condition is intestinal obstruction. This a medical emergency that causes sudden strong cramps in the upper belly that come and go, which may be accompanied by swelling and bloating.
  • Pancreatitis pain wraps around the upper belly and the back in a band-like fashion. It may be aggravated by eating, especially foods high in fat.
  • A heart attack is generally associated with a squeezing chest pain, but it can spread to the abdomen and left hand.

Central Lower Abdomen

Abdominal Pain Map
The central part of your belly and pelvis is another part of the abdomen where different systems meet and intertwine. Pain in this region can be caused by intestinal issues, problems with certain blood vessels and the urinary tract.
  • Cystitis is a bladder infection, which can cause stabbing pains in the middle part of your pelvis, as well as burning sensations during urination and difficulty urinating.
  • A rare symptom of thoracic aortic aneurysm, a disease of the largest blood vessel of the human body, is abdominal and back pain.
Right Lower Abdomen
Abdominal Pain Map
  • Dull pain on the right side of your navel which sharpens and shifts to the lower right abdomen is the first sign of appendicitis.

Left Lower Abdomen

Abdominal Pain Map
  • One of the most common reasons for pain in the left lower side of your tummy is diverticulitis, an inflammation in the large intestine, which causes sudden onset pain in the left lower abdomen, blood in stool and periods of constipation followed by periods of diarrhea.

Left and Right Lower Abdomen

Abdominal Pain Map
If you experience symmetrical pain in the lower abdomen, or pain that fits the following descriptions on either side, it is usually due to an issue with kidneys or the reproductive system.
  • Women can experience dull aching pain in either or both sides of the abdomen, as well as a feeling of heaviness, fullness, swelling and pressure in these areas may suffer from ovarian cysts.
  • Salpingitis, the inflammation of the fallopian tubes, can also be accompanied by abdominal pain and lower back pain on either or both sides in women.
  • Kidney Infection and kidney stones are the primary causes of lower back and abdominal pain after spine problems. Both of these conditions cause excruciating intermittent pain that starts from either or both sides of the groin and spreads upward in the direction of the back. Difficulty urinating, painful urination and urinary urgency are other symptoms of these diseases.
  • Significant pain on either side of the belly in men can be caused by inguinal hernia, which presses on the intestine and can be very dangerous if not treated.
Entire Lower Abdomen
Abdominal Pain Map
Some conditions can cause pain in any location of your lower abdomen, or cause pain in the entire area. These include endometriosis, PID, IBD, and intestinal obstruction.
  • Women suffering from endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) feel mild to severe pelvic and lower abdominal pain, as well as sometimes pain during intercourse. Pelvic pain in women is a concern that shouldn’t be ignored.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) always causes abdominal cramps and spasms, as well as weight loss, anemia, and rectal bleeding.
  • An intestinal obstruction can occur in the lower intestine, too, not only in the upper one. If that is the case, the lower part of the belly will hurt and the skin in that area will be oversensitive and swollen.
Please keep in mind that the information included in this article is just a general guide to abdominal pain and isn’t a diagnosis. If you feel pain in your belly that is strong, persistent, and/or interferes with your daily life we highly recommend you talk to your doctor, who will be able to make a proper diagnosis.
