The Five Deadliest Types of Cancer

According to data gathered from the American Cancer Society, in 2015, around 1,658,370 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the USA alone, and around 589,430 people died from this terrible affliction. Below, you'll find a breakdown of 5 of the deadliest types of cancer that are still prevalent in the world today:

 5. Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer arises from glandular cells and typically affects older men. It is the most prevalent among people with a family history of the disease, as well as  African Americans. Most cases grow slowly, and many patients with asymptomatic prostate cancer are generally only observed without any further treatment being required. Treatment options include external beam radiation therapy (radiotherapy), surgical removal (prostatectomy), or even brachytherapy, which is the implantation of radioactive iodine into the prostate.

4. Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer is, unfortunately, one of the most terribly aggressive cancers. It often besets the sufferer with many dangerous symptoms including stomach pain, bleeding, biliary obstruction, ascites and more, and it can become deadly very quickly. In spite of continuous research, there are no adequate screening options or treatments available yet.

3. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is caused by the appearance and growth of malign cells lining the ducts or lobules of the breast. Breast cancer treatment is far from a simple matter, as it is based on quite a number of factors. The main options available include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, lumpectomy, or mastectomy. Thanks to advances in research and technology, more people are beating this type of cancer each year.

2. Colorectal Cancer
If caught early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable with fairly positive survival rates. In fact, around 90% of patients diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer end up surviving. However, when it enters its advanced stages, the chances of survival are a lot slimmer. There are quite a few treatment options available, including embolization, chemotherapy, surgery or radiotherapy.

1. Lung CancerUnfortunately, most sufferers of lung cancer who are diagnosed with an advanced form of the disease will eventually lose their lives to it. Smoking, which is a modifiable risk factor, is the most common cause of lung cancer by a long shot, which is why quitting smoking (or never starting in the first place) is the best preventative measure possible. Depending on certain factors, treatment may include chemotherapy, surgery or radiotherapy.

Brachytherapy: Low-risk prostate cancer now finds cure

A new technique, in which a single high dose of radiation can be delivered directly to the tumour within a few minutes, is safe and effective for treating men with low-risk prostate cancer, recent findings suggested.

Radiotherapy traditionally involves a series of lower dose treatments that take place over several days or week. The new treatment is called high dose-rate brachytherapy and it delivers radiation via a set of tiny tubes.

Researchers said this technique could offer an effective treatment that is convenient for patients and brings potential time and cost savings for hospitals.

"Brachytherapy, where we use temporary catheters to directly treat tumours, has already proved to be a good treatment for prostate cancer, both in terms of killing the cancer cells and minimising side effects. This usually means patients make four to six visits to the hospital for a series of lower dose treatments.

We wanted to see whether we could get similar results but with just one high dose treatment, saving time for the patient and the hospital," saidone of the researchers. The research included 441 men with prostate cancer who were treated at one of the seven United Kingdom hospitals between 2013 and 2018.

Their cancers were classified depending on how likely they were to spread, as low risk (total of 44 men), medium risk (285 men) or high risk (112 men). All were treated with a single high dose (19 Gy) of radiation; 166 men also received hormone therapy but none had any surgery or chemotherapy.

Researchers monitored the men's progress for an average of 26 months. They measured the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the men's blood two years after the treatment and again three years after the treatment.

PSA is considered to be a good indicator of how well prostate cancer treatment has worked. If levels increase, this can indicate cancer has returned. Overall, after two years, 94 per cent of men showed no sign of the cancer returning, according to their PSA levels.

For men with low-risk cancer this figure was 100 per cent, in men with the medium risk it was 95 per cent and in men, with high-risk cancer, it was 92 per cent. After three years, the overall figure was 88 per cent, and in men with low, medium and high-risk cancers, the figures were 100 per cent, 86 per cent and 75 per cent respectively.

Of the 27 men with raised PSA levels, researchers were able to identify where cancer had returned in 25. In 15, cancer had returned in the prostate. In the rest, it had spread to other parts of the body.

At the time of the treatment, there were no serious side effects. Later on, two men developed urethral strictures that required surgery and two developed rectal fistulae that required a colostomy.

The Dr. said: "These results indicate that high dose-rate brachytherapy is a safe and effective treatment for men with low-risk prostate cancer but further research is needed in medium and high-risk patients to see if the results can be improved with a higher dose".

"This type of treatment offers an attractive alternative to surgery or other forms of radiotherapy as it has a comparatively low risk of side effects. It is also a patient-friendly option because the treatment can be given quickly at a single hospital visit," the Dr.  added.

The team hope to continue studying the impact of using this type of radiotherapy, especially in patients with higher risk prostate cancer who are more likely to suffer a recurrence. She believes it would be possible, given the low risk of side effects, to modify the treatment or increase the dose even further in higher risk cases.

Brachytherapy To Treat Tumour In The Eye

Cancerous growth within the eye can now be treated with embedded radioactive plaques, instead of removing the eye. The cost effective treatment is  called ocular Brachytherapy. This procedure costs now Rs. 10,000 to Rs, 15, 000 as the radioactive iodine-125 seeds are manufactured in India's BARC centre in Mumbai. Earlier, the treatment was expensive, as the seeds were imported from Europe.

Ocular Brachytherapy is used to treat retinoblastoma in children & choroidal melanoma in adults. Retinoblastoma occurs one in every 30,000 live births & choroidal melanoma in 6 in a million & is more predominant in the West than in India. If untreated, the cancer can spread to other organs & even cause death. The tumours are usually treated with enucleation ( removing the eye) or controlled with chemotherapy. Through ocular Brachytherapy, the eye can be salvaged & patients can regain 60-70 % of their vision.

Ocular Brachytherapy can be performed at centres which are equipped for radiology treatment. The procedure is an interdisciplinary one as the treatment dosage is determined by oncologists, the radioactive seed is prepared & placed on a gold plaque by medical physicists & the plaque is surgically sutured over the tumour by an ophthalmologist. The patient spends 5-7 days in isolation following which the plaque is removed.
