As fun and merry as the holiday season is, it also happens to be the peak season for gut-related problems and unwanted weight gain. One of the biggest culprits behind both of these issues is sugar. The biggest danger is that all the desserts, candy, condiments, and sugary drinks are deceptively rewarding because they give you an instant sugar rush but make you sluggish and tired soon after a meal. The good news is - there’s a way to reverse all of these unwanted effects. Let us explain.

Why does sugar make you feel bad?

Enjoying a bit too much sugar is something we all do from time to time. And that’s fine, as long as it doesn’t become a daily habit because overdoing it with sugar regularly has many adverse long-term effects on the body, including an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, Alzheimer’s disease, and excessive weight gain. In order to understand how to reduce the negative effects of sugar on the body, we must explain how the human body metabolizes sugar. 
 
Once you’ve eaten a piece of candy, it is digested into glucose and released into the bloodstream. This gives you an instant spike of energy and releases dopamine into the blood. In order to keep blood sugar levels in check, the pancreas starts making insulin, and the blood glucose levels drop rapidly as it exits the bloodstream and enters the cells, leading to a crash in energy levels as soon as 15 minutes after eating, leaving you craving more sugar as a result.

To prevent a crash from occurring and compensate for the harmful effects of sugar, follow these simple tips. 
 
1. Do not skip meals

So a few pieces of chocolate or a slice of your favorite cake will not change your appearance or your health. The possibly obvious exception to this is people who suffer from diabetes. If you accidentally increase your sugar intake, this could lead to severe hyperglycemia, so contact your doctor and make sure to monitor your blood sugar regularly.

Last but definitely not least, stay hydrated and enjoy some plain antioxidant-rich green tea with lemon to reduce sugary drink cravings.

7 Great Exercises for Toning the Buttocks, Hips, and Legs

Today's lifestyle has led us to spending many hours sitting or lying down, and not enough time exercising. Apart from the negative health effects of lack of exercise, lack of movement for long hours also affects our appearance, as evidenced by the legs, hips, and buttocks that aren’t moved enough while working long days in front of a computer.

To correct the situation, stimulate your heart rate, and feel more vigorous, you may want to try the following 7 simple exercises for shaping your buttocks, hips, and legs. They’ll help you sculpt your body and will also allow you to strengthen your heart and feel more energetic throughout the day.

1. Alternating Jumping Squat

There is nothing like a fun jump to get your heart going, and in the next exercise, you can do this while toning your butt and hips.


How to:  
Stand with your legs together and kneel forward while bending your left leg at a 90-degree angle, supporting yourself with your right leg. 
 
Jump up as high as you can while straightening your legs and lifting your hands above your head. 
 
When you land, change legs and kneel on your right leg, same as you did with your left leg. 
 
Repeat the exercise 10-12 times when doing it for the first time. 
 
Over time, add more reps until you reach 30. 
 
2. Jump and Squat 
Exercises for Toning the Buttocks, Thighs and Leg 
The next exercise involves a heart-thumping jump along with a squat that tones the buttocks and the areas below. It is recommended to wear comfortable, well-fitting sneakers to soften the landing and prevent pain in the knees and calves.

How to:  
Stand in a position where your legs are slightly apart and your knees slightly bent. 
 
Jump up and lift your knees as high as possible and land back into the squat position. 
 
Repeat the exercise 3-10 times for the first time. Over time, add more reps until you reach 30.


3. Outer Thigh Lift

The following exercise is great for shaping the hips and buttocks, and you can do it in the comfort of your home. It is recommended to perform it on a hard surface, such as the floor, however, make sure you do it on a yoga mat.

How to: 
 
Lie on your right side and support your head with your right hand. Place your left hand on the mat in front of your body. 
 
Bend your right foot forward, lift it up slowly and without sudden movements, and slowly lower it. 
 
Repeat the exercise 10-15 times. Change sides and repeat the exercise with your left leg. 
 
 
4. Inner Thigh Lift

This exercise is an advanced version of the previous exercise, and you’ll feel its effect on the buttocks, thighs, and legs as soon as you try it for the first time, and even more in the long run.

How to:  
Lie on your right side and support your head with your right hand. Bend your left foot, placing it in front of you, and hold it in place with your left hand. 
 
Raise your straight right leg slowly and without sudden movements, and slowly lower it back down. Repeat the exercise 10-15 times, change sides and repeat the exercise with your left leg. 
 
 
5. Lunges with Weights 
Exercises for Toning the Buttocks, Thighs and Leg
The next classic exercise will allow you to sculpt your buttocks, hips, and legs with a basic but highly effective lunge. You can use 2-3 pound weights, and if you don’t have weights, use water bottles of the same weight.

How to: 
Hold the weights at your sides while keeping your back straight. 
 
Perform a lunge by bending the right leg while keeping your back straight at all times. Bend deeply and slowly to enjoy the full effect of the exercise. 
 
Return to the starting position, switch legs and kneel with your left leg. Repeat the exercise 10-15 times on both legs. 
 
 
6. Side Lunge with Weights

The following exercise will tone your inner thighs and legs. This exercise requires 2-3 pound weights or water bottles.

How to: 
Place your right hand on your right hip and hold a weight in your left hand. 
 
Move your left leg to the side (be sure to keep it straight) while bending your right leg. Touch your right ankle with the weight in your left hand while keeping your hand straight. 
 
Switch sides, repeat the exercise with your right leg. 
 
Do 7-12 reps with each leg. 
 
 
7. Leg Lift

The slow movement of the leg in the next exercise will make you feel your buttock, thigh and leg muscles well, and it is recommended to perform the exercise on a mat laid over a hard surface. exercises

How to: 
Starting on all fours and then raise your left leg slowly while keeping your body straight (without tilting it sideways), then slowly lower it. 
 
Switch legs (now the left leg should be bent), and perform the exercise with the right leg. 
 
Repeat 10-15 times on each leg.

Promising New Treatment for Alzheimer's Disease

New molecule for Alzheimer's treatment: elderly man with memory problem
The brain sends electrical signals at different rates to activate and deactivate various functions within it, much like how traffic lights work. Gamma wave oscillations are the ones that influence cognitive processes and working memory – the type of memory that helps us remember phone numbers, for example – and Alzheimer's patients who experience symptoms such as memory impairment show a decrease in gamma wave oscillations in their brains.

In other studies, attempts were made to restore memory by increasing gamma wave oscillations with the help of external aids, such as magnetic frequencies, but without success. However, in the current study, there is a significant breakthrough. Instead of trying to influence gamma wave oscillations using external aids, the researchers decided to try to influence the brain from within – with the help of molecules – and the molecule DDL-920 succeeded in the task. 
 
In lab experiments, mice with Alzheimer's symptoms and healthy mice were tested, and they learned to navigate a maze with cues meant to lead them to the exit hole. The mice suffering from Alzheimer's were given a dose of the DDL-920 molecule twice a day for two weeks, and as a result, they showed remarkable improvement in their ability to navigate the maze and find the exit, functioning just as well as healthy mice in the same maze. 
 
Moreover, no negative side effects were observed from the treatment with the molecule, so researchers speculate that treatment with it will be safe for humans as well. However, more human trials are still needed to confirm this theory. If the trials show success at the same level, the molecule will allow effective treatments not only for Alzheimer's patients but also for those with schizophrenia, depression, and people on the autism spectrum.

Is this really a miracle cure for Alzheimer's? 
 
Dr. Módy claims that this mechanism has never been tested and studied before, so it represents a new direction that researchers have not yet tried, and it has a high chance of becoming the leading treatment for Alzheimer's patients. As mentioned, many more trials are still needed on the subject, but researchers are very optimistic. We hope to hear more developments on this soon, and we would be happy to discover if, in the near future, there will indeed be an available treatment that can restore the brain function of Alzheimer's patients to its former state. If so, we may be able to say goodbye to the damage caused by the disease and hello to a new era where "Alzheimer's" is no longer a scary word, but simply another disease that can be treated and its symptoms managed with a simple and quick treatment.
