Note why the playground swings are your child’s best friends

Encourage your kids to hit the playground swings more often, as the favourite childhood activity can teach children how to get along with each other, scientists say. The measured synchronous movement of children on the swings can encourage preschoolers to cooperate on subsequent activities, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Washington in the US showed the potential of synchronised movement in helping young children develop collaborative skills. “Synchrony enhances cooperation, because your attention is directed at engaging with another person, at the same time,” said Tal-Chen Rabinowitch, postdoctoral researcher at UW’s Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-LABS). “We think that being ‘in time’ together enhances social interaction in positive ways,” said Rabinowitch.

Previous studies have linked music and being in sync with other pro-social behaviours, such as helping, sharing and empathising, among young children: For example, marching to a song, might prompt one child to share with another. In this study, researchers sought to focus on movement alone, without music, and examined how children cooperated with one another afterward. They built a swing set that enabled two children to swing in unison, in controlled cycles of time.

Pairs of four-year-olds - who were unfamiliar to one another - were randomly assigned to groups that either swung together in precise time, swung out of sync with each other, or did not swing at all. The pairs in all three groups then participated in a series of tasks designed to evaluate their cooperation. In one activity, the children played a computer game that required them to push buttons at the same time in order to see a cartoon figure appear. Another, called the “give and take” activity, involved passing objects back and forth through a puzzle-like device.

Researchers found that the children who swung in unison completed the tasks faster, indicating better cooperation than those who swung out of sync, or not at all. On the button-push task, for instance, the pairs who had been swinging together showed a greater tendency to strategically raise their hands before they pushed the button so as to signal their intent to the other child, which proved to be a successful tactic for the task. For four-year-olds, moving in sync can create a feeling of “being like” another child that may encourage them to communicate more and try to work together, Rabinowitch said.

 Children in the study played a computer game after swinging. When both children pushed a button at the same time, a cartoon character appeared on the screen, much to these boys’ delight. “We didn’t know before we started the study that cooperation between four-year-olds could be enhanced through the simple experience of moving together,” said Meltzoff. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology.

EATING EARLY DINNER MAY HELP TO LOSE WEIGHT !

Struggling to shed those extra kilos? Worry not, as a new study suggests eating dinner early by mid-afternoon and following it by an 18-hour daily fast or until breakfast the next morning may help with losing weight.

The new research revealed that eating a very early dinner, or even skipping dinner, may reduce swings in hunger, alter fat and carbohydrate burning patterns, which may help in losing weight.

"The study found that eating between 8.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. followed by an 18-hour daily fast kept appetite levels more even throughout the day, in comparison to eating between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.," said lead author Courtney Peterson from Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana, US.

"Eating only during a much smaller window of time than people are typically used to may help with weight loss," Peterson added.

The body has a internal clock, and many aspects of metabolism are at their optimal functioning in the morning.


Therefore, eating in alignment with the body's circadian clock by eating earlier in the day can positively influence health, the researchers explained.

The study showed that although the early time-restricted feeding (eTRF) strategy did not affect the amount of calories burnt by participants, it reduced daily hunger swings and increased fat burning during several hours at night.

It also improved metabolic flexibility, which is the body's ability to switch between burning carbs and fats. Whether eTRF helps with weight loss or improves other aspects of health is still unknown.

"These preliminary findings suggest for the first time in humans what we've seen in animal models -- that the timing of eating during the day does have an impact on our metabolism," said Dale Schoeller, Professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, US.

The findings were presented at The Obesity Society Annual Meeting at the ObesityWeek 2016 in Louisiana.

Bipolar Disorder Drugs May 'Tweak' Genes Affecting Brain


Medications taken by people with bipolar disorder may actually be nudging hundreds of genes that direct the brain to behave more normally, according to new research.
The study suggests that anti-psychotic drugs activate a wide range of genes, changing their function. 
"A gene's activity in any given cell will vary depending on what it's exposed to.
It's not often that scientists stumble upon something in research that they totally weren't expecting to see. "It was a major surprise to us that people treated with an antipsychotic [medication] had changes in the gene expression pattern.
The findings could help point the way to new gene-targeted and stem cell therapies, and provide valuable insight into what causes manic-depressive mood swings.
However, a genetics expert not connected to the study was more cautious about drawing implications from its findings.
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, affects about 5.7 million American adults, or about 2.6 percent of the U.S. population aged 18 and older, according to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The brain disorder causes severe and unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out routine daily tasks.
The new research, published in a recent issue of the journal Bipolar Disorders, involved examining 26 brains donated to a nonprofit brain bank. Fourteen of the brains were from people who had bipolar disorder. Of those, seven were from people who had been taking one or more antipsychotic medications -- such as clozapine, risperidone and haloperidol -- when they died. Twelve brains were from those with no mental health condition.
In comparing the brains, the scientists observed that the genes of those that had been exposed to anti-psychotics at the time of death or during their lifetime were similar to those from people who did not have bipolar disorder. This suggests that the drugs may normalize or suppress the kinds of brain pathology one would expect in bipolar disorder, according to the researchers.
The study also supports the idea that the ability of brain cells to effectively communicate with each other may be impaired in people with bipolar disorder. The researchers found that the brains of people who were taking anti-psychotics and those who did not have bipolar disorder showed striking similarities in how their brains relayed signals between cell gaps, or synapses, and on high-speed neuronal "freeways" called the nodes of Ranvier.
While anti-psychotic medications can often be effective in moderating the effects of bipolar disorder, the side effects are often difficult for people to deal with. These include metabolic syndrome -- a combination of symptoms that increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes -- as well as weight gain, increased blood sugar levels, and tremors.
"It's still not known if these changes just happen to occur or play a key role in the therapeutic effect," said a Dr. 
The researchers don't have data on what medications the brains were exposed to during their lifetimes. Patients [with bipolar disorder] are exposed to antidepressants, drugs of abuse, and other medications, and we don't have medication exposure data on the brains [of the people without bipolar disorder].
According to the study, the research represents a step toward a radical evolution in the design of drugs for psychiatric conditions by the pharmaceutical industry.
"A lot of these psychiatric illnesses fluctuate, but now we give medications at a constant rate, almost as if we were giving a diabetic the same amount of insulin no matter what the person's blood sugar is," a  researcher said. "Medications as we know them will change based on our understanding of the biological mechanisms behind disease."
