Going vegan may lowerr IQ

According to a new study, ditching dairy could see a drop fo 13 IQ points because of a lack of iodine in the body.

Experts fear that with a growing number of youngsters choosing to turn vegan, there could be serious health consequences for future generations.

Studies have shown a startling difference in the IQ of communities who have adequate amounts of iodine in their diet compared to those who don't.

And if they don't have enough during pregnancy, it could put babies at serious risk.

A dietician said that a lot of people are opting for a more plant-based diets.

Many of them think they're lactose intolerant or that they chose to remove dairy because of environmental or medical reasons.

"Unfortunately the dairy alternative products out there aren't fortified with calcium. One of the best sources of iodine in our diet are dairy products. Other things like fish, eggs and even poultry does provide smaller amounts,” she says, adding that without iodine in the diet it can cause real tiredness in teenagers because it's needed for the correct functioning of the thyroid.

Moreover, she added that babies born to mothers who have really low intakes of iodine during pregnancy can suffer from mental retardation.

According to researchers who looked at the iodine content of 47 health milks - including soya, coconut, almond rice and oat milk - the levels of iodine were two per cent lower of those in cow's milk, it was reported.

Baby snores regularly? It could be signs of serious health problems

It's pretty normal for babies to moan, snore, groan and whimper in their sleep. But sometimes a baby's sleep behaviours such as frequent snoring, breathing problems during sleep can indicate more serious health problems.

As per a new study, children with regular snoring - at least four nights a week – may be indicative of some serious health problems, including reduced attention, higher levels of social problems and anxiety, etc.

"Breathing is an automated process, controlled by the brain. By monitoring chemical levels in the blood, the brain can work out if the breathing is working properly," Kidspot quoted ENT expert David McIntosh as saying.

There are reasons why babies snore, and not all of them are cause for concern.

McIntosh noted that if the signals to the brain indicate that something is wrong, the brain can alter the rate of breathing to compensate.

"The problem of airway obstruction [which is what happens when you are snoring] though is that even if the brain recognises there is a problem, increasing the effort of breathing achieves very little," he added.

"Furthermore, blockage to breathing results in oxygen levels in the blood dropping.

This is something the brain does not like very much.

"Through his research and through observing children who habitually snore, McIntosh has seen evidence of reduced attention, higher levels of social problems and anxiety, depressive symptoms, cognitive dysfunctions, memory problems and problems with thinking through things logically.

In a much larger study conducted, which monitored 1,000 children over a period of six years, it was found that children who snored, breathed through the mouth, or had sleep apnea had a higher incidence of the behavioural issues listed above, and were 50 to 90 percent more likely to develop ADHD-like symptoms than normal breathers.

The study has been published in the journal Laryngology and Otology.
