Guides to Prevent and Fight Diabetes

Type II diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. In the US alone, about 10% of people have diabetes, and of those - over 90-95% have type II diabetes. It used to be prevalent only after the age of 45, but these days, it's happening at all ages, including children and teens. There is so much we can do to prevent the onset of this terrible disease, as well as fight it when it does occur. Below you'll find 10 of our best guides for doing just that. Click on any of the titles to read more about the subject.

Early Detection of Diabetes and How to Reverse It

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent new epidemics in the world, and one of the fastest growing diseases. One of the main reasons for this is the unhealthy lifestyle and habits that are formed by modern living.

It is of immense importance that everyone is aware of the signs of type 2 diabetes, because the best way to avoid the disease is to make early detection and engage in actions that will prevent diabetes from developing.

The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'.  The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.

So first, know the symptoms:

* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot

* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.

* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.

* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with
   exercising.

* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.

* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.

* Blurred night vision.

Tests that help in early detection:

If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you get yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:

1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:

This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If the blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.

2. Oral Glucose Test

Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.

Don't panic if your test results reveal that you are a pre-diabetic, there are still ways to reverse the process.

How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes:

Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood-sugar levels, they are not a long-term solution. A long-term reversal of the symptoms requires:

1. Daily exercise:

If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles become less dependent on insulin, and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.

2. Watch your carb consumption.

To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice, and boiled potatoes. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies and cakes from your daily consumption.

3. Drink LOTS of water.

I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.

4. Change to a high fiber diet

Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.

5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.

This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.

These are the natural ways to fight early diabetes, and have no side effects. So make sure you stick to a healthy diet, daily exercise and watch what you eat to keep diabetes away.

Currently, no treatment can stop Alzheimer's disease, but now, a new study has offered hope by showing that it possible to reverse memory loss in the patients.

Results from quantitative MRI and neuropsychological testing show unprecedented improvements in ten patients with early Alzheimer's disease (AD) or its precursors following treatment with a programmatic and personalized therapy.

The study of 10 patients, which comes jointly from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the UCLA Easton Laboratories for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, is the first to objectively show that memory loss in patients can be reversed, and improvement sustained, using a complex, 36-point therapeutic personalized program that involves comprehensive changes in diet, brain stimulation, exercise, optimization of sleep, specific pharmaceuticals and vitamins, and multiple additional steps that affect brain chemistry.

"All of these patients had either well-defined mild cognitive impairment (MCI), subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) or had been diagnosed with AD before beginning the program," said author Dale Bredesen, who noted that patients who had had to discontinue work were able to return to work and those struggling at their jobs were able to improve their performance. "Follow up testing showed some of the patients going from abnormal to normal."

All but one of the ten patients included in the study are at genetic risk for AD, carrying at least one copy of the APOE4 allele. Five of the patients carry two copies of APOE4 which gives them a 10-12 fold increased risk of developing AD. "We're entering a new era," said Bredesen.

"The old advice was to avoid testing for APOE because there was nothing that could be done about it. Now we're recommending that people find out their genetic status as early as possible so they can go on prevention." Sixty-five percent of the Alzheimer's cases in this country involve APOE4; with seven million people carrying two copies of the ApoE4 allele.

Bredesen's systems-based approach to reverse memory loss follows the abject failure of monotherapies designed to treat AD and the success of combination therapies to treat other chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and HIV.

Bredesen says decades of biomedical research, both in his and other labs, has revealed that an extensive network of molecular interactions is involved in AD pathogenesis, suggesting that a broader-based therapeutic approach may be more effective. 0

The study appears online in the journal Aging.

A new study describes an innovative strategy that reverses symptoms in the neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer  and Parkinson, at least in fruit flies which had been genetically altered to model the diseases.

These common neurodegenerative disorders cause untold suffering to millions of patients and their families. Treatments for these diseases are limited, and no cures exist.

"The novel approach we used has significant translational implications," said one of the lead researcher, Robert Schwarcz.

"If we can duplicate these effects in patients, we could benefit a lot of people," he added.

Schwarcz, in collaboration with geneticist Flaviano Giorgini at the University of Leicester, focused on metabolites related to the amino acid tryptophan.

When tryptophan degrades in the body, it breaks down into several compounds that have biological activities in the nervous system. One of these, 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HK), has neurotoxic properties whereas another, named kynurenic acid (KYNA), has the ability to prevent nerve cell degeneration.

The relative abundance of these two compounds in the brain may be critical in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and also Huntington's disease.

The next steps will involve testing of the new concept in humans and to examine whether the treatment works for neurodegenerative diseases.

The study has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
