Here's why beetroot juice is the best post-workout recovery drink

Try beetroot juice post-workout session

Most gym-goers stress about the kind of food they should eat before and after their workout session. This is because the diet and exercise you follow are both important when you aim to stay fit and healthy. Where on one hand, nutritious pre-workout food helps you perform better, on the other hand having a nutrient-dense food after a workout can help in speedy muscle recovery. There are plenty of food items that you can have after an intense workout session... but one drink that is like a wonder post workout drink is beetroot juice.

Why beetroot juice?

Beetroot juice is considered as "super juice" as it can improve athletic performance, regulate blood pressure, and increase blood flow. Packed with iron, magnesium, folate and antioxidant properties, beetroot juice is an excellent post-workout drink.

According to a study

As per a study, drinking beet juice can help muscles recover faster than any other food item. The study was conducted on twenty people, who were divided into three groups. One group consumed 250 ml of beetroot juice, the second one had 125 ml of beet juice and the third group was provided a placebo. The participant had this drink 24 to 48 hours after performing 100 drop jumps.

In the end, it was found that the group who had the highest dosage of beetroot juice recovered faster. Beetroot juice contains nitric oxide that helps in faster muscle recovery and even reduces inflammation.

When you should have beetroot juice

You can have beetroot juice either after your workout session or during intervals of repetitive exercises. Having this naturally sweet juice between your workout session can help to increase your performance. It has been found that having this juice before a marathon can help you run faster.

Include green leafy vegetables, nuts in your daughter’s diet to boost her grades

Dear parents, boost your daughter’s iron intake with green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans and pulses as a new study reveals that physically fit female students with normal iron levels may perform better academically.

Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Pennsylvania State University have found that a student’s fitness level and iron status could be the difference between making an A or a B.

The findings, published in the journal of Nutrition, suggest that the difference in grade point average was as much as 0.34 -- enough to drop or increase a letter grade.

“Grade point average (GPA) is a very easy measure of success and something everyone can relate to,” said study author Karsten Koehler from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the US.

“That’s something that resonates pretty well. It’s always nice to show an association that has a meaningful effect that translates into something everybody can apply,” Koehler added.

Iron helps the body with essential functions such as transporting oxygen in the blood.

Iron deficiency is associated with fatigue, lower work capacity and poor academic performance.

Physical fitness is also known to influence overall health, cognition and learning.

They analysed 105 women enrolled at Penn State and had an average GPA of 3.68.
The results indicate that women with the highest levels of stored iron had the highest grades.

The results indicate that those who were fittest and had adequate iron stores had higher grades than less-fit women with lower iron stores.

“The impact of fitness was greater overall than the impact of iron status, but taken together, the impact was even greater,” Koehler explained.

“Improving fitness or maintaining a high level of fitness can be important for collegiate success,” Koehler stated.

“There is profound evidence that it goes hand-in-hand--that training has an effect on cognitive performance,” the authors concluded.
