Weight loss: 6 reasons you have a bulging belly

Do you have a bulging belly

Everyone wants to have a flat stomach. Whether you're someone working to lose weight or simply trying to stay fit. But losing fat from the abdominal area is quite challenging. Even after following a strict diet and performing intense exercise, if you are not able to lose your belly fat then there might be some other hidden reasons behind it.

Here are six common reasons why you have a big belly:
1) Genetics
If even after eating healthy and clean, you are unable to reduce your waistline, then it might be due to your genes. Although genes are not directly linked with a large belly, but it has some impact on it. This happens because visceral fat, which is a type of fat, stored in our abdomen area and responsible for keeping people slim is partly determined by your genetics. So, if your forefathers had large bellies, you might have to suffer from this problem too.

2) Food Allergies
Not all types of food allergies show symptoms like hives or breakouts. Some food allergies like celiac disease and gluten sensitivity can even lead to inflammation and expansion of the stomach. It can also cause bloating, joint pain and headaches.

3) Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is another common reason for unwanted weight gain. Thyroid diseases slow down metabolism, which leads to accumulation of fat in different body parts including your stomach area. Thyroid hormones reduce the pace at which different organs of our body works, as a result, our body burns fewer calories, which ultimately leads to weight gain.

4) Steroids
Steroids are another reason why people gain weight. Mostly perimenopausal women who take steroids to combat hormonal changes are at the risk of gaining weight. This happens because steroids re-balance hormones, which leads to extra fat deposits in different parts of the body, especially in the abdominal area.

5) Anti-depressants
Taking antidepressants for a long time can even lead to weight gain. The drugs affect the insulin levels in the body which lead to unwanted fat accumulation around your tummy. But this depends on the type of drugs you are taking.

6) Insulin
Insulin can cause different chemical changes in our body, which help to absorb glucose and manage blood sugar level. The hormonal changes can generally lead to weight gain.

Steroids ineffective for chest pains in non-asthmatic patients

According to a new research, Oral steroids should not be used for treating acute lower respiratory tract infection or chest pains in adults who don't have asthma or other chronic lung diseases, as they do not reduce the duration or severity of symptoms.

In the study, 398 non-asthmatic adults with acute chest infections but no evidence of pneumonia and not requiring immediate antibiotic treatment were randomly split into two groups.

One group received 40mg of the oral steroid 'prednisolone' for five days (198 participants) and other received an identical placebo over the same time period (200 participants).

The team found there was no reduction in the duration of cough, the main symptom of chest infections, or the severity of the accompanying symptoms between two and four days after treatment (when symptoms are usually at their most severe) in the prednisolone group compared with the placebo group.

The results suggest that steroids are not effective in the treatment of chest infections in non-asthmatic adult patients.

“Chest infections are one of the most common problems in primary care and often treated inappropriately with antibiotics.

Corticosteroids, like prednisolone, are increasingly being used to try to reduce the symptoms of chest infections, but without sufficient evidence,” said the study’s lead author.

Adding, “Our study does not support the continued use of steroids as they do not have a clinically useful effect on symptom duration or severity. We would not recommend their use for this group of patients.”

Study’s co-author added, “Oral and inhaled steroids are known to be highly effective in treating acute asthma as well as infective flares of other long-term lung conditions but need to be used carefully because of the risk of unwanted side effects.” He concluded by saying, “We chose to test the effect of steroids for chest infections as some of the symptoms of chest infections, such as shortness of breath, wheeze and cough with phlegm, overlap with acute asthma. However, we have conclusively demonstrated they are not effective in this group of patients.”
