Neurochemicals play significant roles in emotional and cognitive functions

Evolutionary changes in the human brain are the potential cause of anxiety, new research has found. Neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin play significant roles in the emotional as well as cognitive functions of the human brain. Vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1) is one of the many genes that are majorly responsible for regulating neuronal signalling and for transporting neurotransmitters.

The research team of the Tohoku University reconstructed ancestral VMAt1 proteins for their study which further revealed the functional changes that have taken place in the neurotransmitter uptake of VMAT1 during the course of human evolution.


The team of researchers including Professor Masakado Kawata and PhD candidate Daiki Sato of the Graduate School of Life Sciences at Tohoku University previously found out that VMAT1 is one of the genes that had evolved through the human lineage.

VMAT 1 contains two mutations or the genome changes which are human-specific. In the study, the researchers revealed the evolutionary changes present in the uptake of neurotransmitters through the reconstruction of ancestral VMAT1 proteins. The researchers began by applying a fluorescent substrate for visualizing and quantifying the neurotransmitter uptake of every genotype.

The researchers found out that the ancestral VMAT1 protein exhibited an increased uptake of neurotransmitters as compared to the derived genotype which is shown to be associated with depression and/or anxiety in contemporary human populations.

"These results of our study reveal that our ancestors may have been able to withstand higher levels of anxiety or depression," said the authors of the study. The researchers would next try to get a better understanding of how the variants contributed to our brain evolution. "This would be the striking evidence that links the evolution of our genome and brain," said the authors of the study.

Breathing Exercises Will Ease Hot Flashes

Breathing exercises produce a relaxation response which leads to a corresponding reduction of the neurochemicals produced by stress. The neurochemicals not only increase core temperature. But they also narrow the 'temperature neutral zone' in the brain - the range in which you don't shiver or sweat. This therefore makes hot flashes more common. Here are three breathing exercises you can try to reduce hot flashes.

1. Steady and slow This simple yet effective breathing technique keeps the mind free from thoughts.
Here's How:
1. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, touching the ridge between your teeth and palate.
2. Breathe in through your nose and out through your pursed lips, filling and emptying your lungs with air.
3. As you inhale, slowly count to 4, filling the bottom of your lungs with air. As you exhale, count to 4 again filling the top of your lungs with air.
4. At the bottom of your exhale, hold your breath for a count of 6 than repeat the breathing pattern for a minimum of 4 times or a maximum of 8, keeping your tongue placed on that ridge between your teeth. 

2. 'Anapana' respiration An ancient Buddhist breath meditation. The goal is to keep your attention focused on the small area between your nostrils and upper lip.
Here's How: 
1. Start by breathing normally, in and out through the nose. Pay close attention to every sensation in this area.
2. Feel the breath as it passes in and out through your nose. Feel it stirring nose hairs, feel it cooler going in and warmer when exiting.
3. Continue to breathe in this way and notice and watch those sensations pass as quickly as they come.
4. If you feel your attention wander, let the thoughts go and return your attention to the one small area under your nose and above your lips.
5. Repeat this breathing exercise for a minimum of 5 minutes, or until you feel completely relaxed.
3. Paced respirations This breathing technique can be used as a first line therapy for women with menopausal hot flashes. It is a slow and deliberate deep breathing exercises sustained for a specific period of time. This breathing exercise takes a total of 6 to 8 breaths per minute. Over time, this breathing exercise can reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes.
Here's How:
1. Count slowly up to five as you inhale. Once you have inhaled completely, exhale slowly for the same count.
2. To help keep you mind focused on the breath, silently say 1000 between each one.
3. Commit to this breath twice a day for a total of 15 minutes.

Schizophrenia symptoms set in early but often ignored

Doctors say that if the disease is detected early, 40% patients can be cured completely.

The number of schizophrenia cases being reported in the 

state is on the rise. But lack of awareness, the stigma 

associated with the condition and other such factors are 

preventing families from identifying it early in life. In fact, 

experts say that symptoms of the disease can be seen in 

early adolescence and teenage but most of the times, 

families miss or deliberately ignore these symptoms due to 

their reluctance to accept the fact that there is a problem.    

“Of the 280 new patients that I have here, 60% are cases of 

schizophrenia. Most of them are in the age group of 30 to 45 

years. It is quite probable that they may have exhibited 

symptoms in their teenage years itself which were ignored 

due to lack of awareness,” said a Dr.

According to him, 40% of schizophrenia cases can be treated 


completely if detected early. In the rest, 50% of time it is 

possible to control it with medicines.

But often, by the time patients come to us it is too late. 

Moreover, you should remember that schizophrenia is a 

disorder, not a disease. In hardly 10% of the cases does it so 

happen that patients come to us the moment they detect any 

symptoms,” said a Dr. He said that families take quite some 

time to accept that their loved one is a patient of 

schizophrenia. 

It is a biological, psychological and social disorder caused by 


neuro-chemical imbalance in the brain. “In many cases the 

patients exhibit odd behaviour very early in their teens 

including being in their own thoughts, a belief that they have 

a sixth sense, having delusions and hallucinations. But 

families often dismiss such behaviour as part of the child’s 

personality instead of considering the possibility of these 

being symptoms of schizophrenia,” said a Dr.   

Another psychiatrist,  said that many of the symptoms 


associated with the disease when exhibited by patients in 

their teens are termed as ‘good behaviour’ by parents and 

families.   

“When a teenager stays alone, doesn't have many friends 


and lives in his own world, parents believe that she/he is 

being a good child. The cases that get detected early are 

often the ones in which the patients turn aggressive,” said a 

Dr.

Those cases that don’t show aggressive symptoms are 


invariably detected late and the response to medication too is 

often sluggish. He jokes that as in the Parliament, so in 

schizophrenia it is aggressive behaviour that first draws 

attention to the fact that something is wrong.

Benefits of Walking


The human body is made to walk.
Our bodies function better when we walk. We are healthier in many ways when we walk.
Walking 30 minutes a day cuts the rate of people becoming diabetic by more than half and it cuts the risk of people over 60 becoming diabetic by almost 70 percent.
Walking cuts the risk of stroke by more than 25 percent.
Walking reduces hypertension. The body has over 100,000 miles of blood vessels. Those blood vessels are more supple and healthier when we walk.
Walking cuts the risk of cancer as well as diabetes and stroke.
Women who walk have a 20 percent lower likelihood of getting breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of getting colon cancer.
Women with breast cancer who walk regularly can reduce their recurrence rate and their mortality rate by over 50 percent.
The human body works better when we walk. The body resists diseases better when we walk, and the body heals faster when we walk.
 We don't have to walk a lot. Thirty minutes a day has a huge impact on our health.
Men who walk thirty minutes a day have a significantly lower level of prostate cancer. Men who walk regularly have a 60 percent lower risk of colon cancer.
For men with prostate cancer, studies have shown that walkers have a 46 percent lower mortality rate.
Walking also helps prevent depression, and people who walk regularly are more likely to see improvements in their depression. In one study, people who walked and took medication scored twice as well in 30 days as the women who only took the medication. Another study showed that depressed people who walked regularly had a significantly higher level of not being depressed in a year compared to depressed people who did not walk. The body generates endorphins when we walk. Endorphins help us feel good.
Walking strengthens the heart. Walking strengthens bones. Walking improves the circulatory system.
Walking generates positive neurochemicals. Healthy eating is important but dieting can trigger negative neurochemicals and can be hard to do.

Walking speeds up metabolism and burns calories. Walkers often find that eating habits change and weight loss results from those eating changes.
Walking significantly diminishes the risk of hip fracture and the need for gallstone surgery is 20 to 31 percent lower for walkers.
 Walking is the right thing to do.
The body needs to walk.
We don't need to walk a lot 30 minutes a day makes the body work better.
The best news is that the 30 minutes doesn't have to be done in one lump of time. Two 15 minute walks achieve the same goals. Three 10 minute walks achieve most of those goals.
We can walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night and achieve our walking goals.
Walking feels good. It helps the body heal. It keeps the body healthy. It improves our biological health, our physical health, our psychosocial health, and helps with our emotional health. Walking can literally add years entire years to your life.
Its good to walk.
