Eat your way to youthful hair: Antioxidant in vegetables may stop graying

Hair graying is often seen as a visible sign of aging. Around the world, people search for ways to slow or prevent this process. Despite the demand, few scientifically proven treatments exist. However, new research suggests that an antioxidant found in vegetables may offer a promising solution.

Studying hair graying in humans takes years, making it difficult to develop effective treatments. To accelerate research, scientists at Nagoya University in Japan created a model using genetically modified mice that mimic human hair graying. These mice develop gray hair more quickly, allowing researchers to analyze the aging process at a faster rate.

The study published in the journal Antioxidants, led by Masashi Kato and Takumi Kagawa, focused on how hair follicles lose their pigmentation over time. In both humans and these model mice, hair color depends on melanocyte stem cells (MSCs).

These cells reside in hair follicles and produce melanocytes, which generate pigment. As hair cycles through growth phases, MSCs renew themselves. Over time, this renewal process slows, causing a decrease in melanocytes and, ultimately, gray hair.

The research uncovered a key factor in this process: endothelins. These proteins help regulate melanocyte activity by binding to endothelin receptor B (Ednrb). In aging hair follicles, the production of endothelins declines, leading to decreased melanocyte function. This progressive loss of pigmentation results in gray or white hair. If scientists could find a way to preserve endothelin signaling, they might slow the graying process.

The Role of Luteolin

Luteolin, a naturally occurring plant flavonoid, has gained attention for its potential anti-aging properties. Found in celery, broccoli, carrots, onions, and peppers, luteolin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, its impact on hair pigmentation had not been thoroughly studied.

To test luteolin’s effects, researchers treated graying mice with three different antioxidants: luteolin, hesperetin, and diosmetin. The results were striking. Mice treated with luteolin maintained their black fur, while those treated with hesperetin or diosmetin continued to gray. Whether applied topically or given orally, luteolin appeared to prevent hair from losing its color.

“This result was surprising,” Professor Kato said. “While we expected that antioxidants may also have anti-graying effects, only luteolin, not hesperetin or diosmetin, demonstrated significant effects. This finding suggests that luteolin may have a unique medicinal effect that prevents graying.”

Compounds in pomegranate juice found to trigger cancer cell death

With proper dietary supplementation with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents, cancer may be prevented or slowed down. One of these powerful anti-cancer agents is pomegranate. According to research, pomegranate juice and its extract contain powerful healing chemical compounds such as luteolin and ellagic acid that effectively work together to help prevent cancer cell growth, particularly prostate cancer cells.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancer types, affecting 1 in 9 men. It is also the second leading cause of death from cancer among American men.

Researchers exposed human prostate cancer cells to pomegranate fruit extract. Exposure to the extract caused the cancer cells to immediately produce substances that cause apoptosis, which is the programmed cell death in cancer cells. This process controls the destruction of potentially cancerous tissue in the body.

In another experiment, researchers fed mice with cancer with pomegranate fruit extract. Consumption of pomegranate fruit extract significantly inhibited tumor growth and caused a dramatic drop in an important prostate antigen. With these findings, the researchers concluded that pomegranate juice could help prevent prostate cancer and slow down its development.

In a more in-depth study on pomegranate compounds, German researchers searched for ways to reverse or slow down tumor growth in some types of prostate cancer. They evaluated a variety of pomegranate extract forms, such as those from the seeds, juice, and fruit oils.

The researchers found that pomegranate extracts work together with several important mechanisms to help hamper the growth of cancer cells, which is in contrast to the drugs used in chemotherapy that only work through one mechanism. Eventually, this will cause cancer cells to be immune to chemotherapy.

In addition, the researchers discovered that pomegranate extracts do not affect healthy prostate cells and only target cancerous cells.

Overall, pomegranate juice and pomegranate juice extract help to decrease cancer cell growth rates and increase cell death rates. At the same time, these anti-cancer agents enhance the ability of healthy cells to withstand oxidative stress. These findings prove that pomegranate is a powerful agent in fighting against prostate cancer.

Other benefits of pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice also provides other health benefits in addition to its anti-cancer benefits. Here are some of them:
It is rich in antioxidants: Pomegranate juice is packed with antioxidants. In fact, it contains higher antioxidant levels than most other fruit juices. It is also three times rich er in antioxidants than red wine and green tea. These antioxidants can help eliminate free radicals from the body, protect cells from damage, and fight inflammation.
It is rich in vitamins: Pomegranate juice can provide more than 40 percent of the daily vitamin C requirement. Make sure to drink homemade or fresh pomegranate to get the most of vitamin C as this vitamin can be broken down when pasteurized. Pomegranate is also a good source of other nutrients, including folate, potassium, and vitamin K.
It is good for the brain: A study found that drinking eight ounces of pomegranate juice every day may enhance learning and memory. The antioxidant content of the juice may also help to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
It aids in digestion: The anti-inflammatory properties of pomegranate juice may help improve the digestive function, especially in people with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases.
It supports heart health: Drinking pomegranate juice may also protect the heart and arteries as it enhances blood flow and prevents arteries from being stiff and thick. It may also stall plaque growth and cholesterol buildup in the arteries. In addition, it may help lower systolic blood pressure.

Eating celery, broccoli can improve treatment of breast cancer

Researchers from the University of Missouri found that a natural compound, Luteolin, found in herbs such as thyme and parsley and vegetables such as celery and broccoli, can reduce the risk of developing metastasis originating from triple-negative breast cancer in women.
The findings indicate that Luteolin, a naturally occurring, non-toxic plant compound that has been proven effective against several types of cancer.

"Triple-negative breast cancers are cancer cells that lack three receptors targeted by current chemotherapy regimens. Because of this lack of receptors, common cancer drugs can't 'find' the cells, and doctors must treat the cancer with extremely aggressive and highly toxic treatment strategies," said Salman Hyder from the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center.

"Women with this type of breast cancer also frequently develop metastatic lesions that originate from drug-resistant cells. Therefore, safer therapeutic therapies that are more effective are being sought for this deadly type of cancer in women," Hyder added.

The team tested Luteolin to determine if it could suppress metastasis, using human triple-negative breast cancer cells grown in mice.

In the first series of tests, they found that Luteolin inhibited the metastasis of triple-negative cancer in the lungs of affected mice.

"Mice exposed to human triple-negative breast cancer cells experienced significantly reduced metastastic growth in their lungs after being treated with Luteolin," Hyder stated.

"In almost every case, the mice also saw no weight loss, which means luteolin has no toxic effects; this plant compound is both safe and effective," Hyder explained.

They found that Luteolin inhibits that migration and can also kill cancer cells.
