Aspirin may lower risk of ovarian cancer

Taking a low-dose of aspirin daily may help women lower their risk of developing ovarian cancer by 23 per cent, suggests a new study.

Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynaecological cancer, largely due to lack of early detection strategies and is believed that the inflammation that occurs during ovulation plays a role in the development of this cancer.

Aspirin is thought to lower cancer risk by reducing inflammation.

The findings, led by researchers from H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Centre and Research Institute in the US, showed that low-dose aspirin use was associated with a lower risk of ovarian cancer while standard-dose aspirin use increased the risk, their findings revealed.
Conversely, women who took non-aspirin anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) -- at least 10 tablets per week for many years, had an increased risk of developing the disease.

"We're not quite at the stage where we could make the recommendation that daily aspirin use lowers ovarian cancer risk. We need to do more research. But it is definitely something women should discuss with their physician," said Shelley Tworoger, Associate Centre Director from the varsity.

For this study, published in the journal JAMA Oncology, the team analysed data on more than 200,000 women among which 1,054 developed ovarian cancer.

In addition, researchers looked at the participants' use of aspirin (325 milligrams), low-dose aspirin (100 milligrams or less), non-aspirin NSAIDs and acetaminophen.

Vaginal estrogen therapy safe for postmenopausal symptoms

The low dose vaginal estrogen therapy remains underused, despite its proven effectiveness for the treatment of genital symptoms of menopause. This is contributed largely to misconceptions regarding its safety. However, a new study published has found that its use is not associated with a higher risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease.

About 25-70% of the postmenopausal women face urinary and genital issues collectively known as the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). The symptoms include lack of lubrication, pain during intercourse, urinary tract infections, vaginal burning, and irritation. GSM symptoms do not resolve over time, are chronic and can become progressively worse without treatment.

Low-dose vaginal estrogen therapy is the recommended and most effective treatment for GSM. Multiple studies document the superior effectiveness of vaginal estrogen over non-hormone therapies and demonstrate that it provides better symptom relief than oral estrogen therapy.

Owing to misconceptions regarding its safety ( which partially stem from the FDA-issued black-box warning that relates to systemic hormone therapy), vaginal estrogen therapy is not prescribed as often as it could be, leading to lower quality of life in many postmenopausal women.

Researchers followed women for more than 18 years to examine the associations between the use of vaginal estrogen and multiple health outcomes including cancer ( total invasive, breast, endometrial, ovarian and colorectal cancer), cardiovascular disease ( total myocardial infarction, stroke and pulmonary embolism/ deep vein thrombosis ) and hip fracture.

Over-the-counter vaginal lubricants and moisturisers are often used as first-line treatments for women with symptoms of GSM, says a Dr. " Persistent symptoms often need therapies such as local vaginal estrogen, intra-vaginal dehydroepiandrosterone, or oral ospemifent. This study adds to a growing body of data showing the long-term efficacy and safety of low-dose vaginal estrogen, which works primarily locally with minimal systemic absorption".

" Vaginal estrogen use was not associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Our findings lend support to the safety of vaginal estrogen use, a highly effective treatment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause, " concluded the authors.

Small doses of medical marijuana help relieve stress

A recent study has confirmed that small doses of medical marijuana do help relieve stress, but taking more can have the opposite effect.

Researchers  report that low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive compound in marijuana, does reduce stress, but in a highly dose-dependent manner: very low doses lessened the jitters of a public-speaking task, while slightly higher doses, enough to produce a mild "high," actually increased anxiety.

Cannabis is a highly regulated category 1 substance, and permits to study the drug are difficult to obtain. While it is common knowledge that many people use cannabis for its stress-relieving effects, "very few published studies have looked into the effects of THC on stress, or at the effects of different levels of THC on stress," said corresponding author.

"We found that THC at low doses reduced stress, while higher doses had the opposite effect, underscoring the importance of dose when it comes to THC and its effects," she added. The team recruited 42 healthy volunteers 18 to 40 years old who had some experience with cannabis use but who were not daily users.

Participants were randomly divided into three groups: The low-dose group received a capsule containing 7.5 milligrams of THC; the moderate-dose group received a capsule containing 12.5 milligrams of THC; and a placebo group received a capsule containing none. Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was in each group.

"The doses used in the study produce effects that are equivalent to only a few puffs of a cannabis cigarette," said one of the researcher, noting that it is difficult to compare doses of smoked cannabis to doses of ingested THC. "We didn't want to include a much larger dose, because we wanted to avoid potential adverse effects or cardiovascular effects that can result from higher doses of THC."

Participants attended two four-hour sessions, five days apart. At each session, they took their capsule and then relaxed for two hours to allow the THC to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

"Our findings provide some support for the common claim that cannabis is used to reduce stress and relieve tension and anxiety,"
researcher said. "At the same time, our finding that participants in the higher THC group reported small but significant increases in anxiety and negative mood throughout the test supports the idea that THC can also produce the opposite effect."

The study is published in a journal.
