Hypertension: THESE breathing techniques help lower BP

Hypertension or high blood pressure is common today even with the youngsters. Gone are the days, when age was one of the factors for high blood pressure. Today, it can happen to anyone, and the reasons are excessive stress levels, sedentary lifestyle and indulging in wrong foods. And the risks also increase if there's a family history of high BP. Considering the hectic life that we lead, we often don't get time to work on our BP.

Hence, here are some breathing techniques that you must perform for high BP, they are not time-consuming but will also help you lower your BP. These breathing techniques help detoxify your blood, pep up your immunity and rejuvenate you.

Sama Vritti:

This is a very simple breathing technique and can be done anywhere, irrespective of the time. It helps you relax and calm down, which ultimately brings down the blood pressure level. Do this before you go to sleep as it will be more beneficial then.

Kapalbhati Pranayama

This breathing technique has multiple health benefits. Do this early in the morning on an empty stomach to obtain its advantages. It detoxifies your blood, freeing you from ailments, including hypertension. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before you start practising this.
Anulom Vilom Pranayama:
This technique helps to clean up your nervous system and also improves blood circulation. It is also known to lower the risk of diabetes and hypertension.
Seetkari Pranayama:

This is one of the best breathing techniques. It helps to keep your high blood pressure in control and helps in beating the stress levels, preventing a spike in blood pressure.

Thirty Second Deep Breathing Exercise:

Perform this breathing technique in silence. A research study conducted in Japan suggests that this breathing technique has the potential to reduce and maintain the levels of blood pressure.

Belly breathing:

This is one of the basic breathing techniques that is often advised for controlling high levels of blood pressure. Perform this breathing technique 10 times it reduces stress and hypertension.

Follow these breathing techniques, and you will notice the difference in your blood pressure levels soon. However, it's recommended to consult your physician before you perform these techniques to avoid unwanted complications.

These two seemingly simple health issues in youth can multiply your heart risk later

With high stress levels and neglected lifestyle, you’d think that high blood pressure and unregulated cholesterol is fast becoming a common health phenomena. Right? While what you are thinking may partially be true, what isn’t in line is people expecting it to be so common, that it ceases to be dangerous. A new study  reveals that for those who fail to effectively manage it in their initial years are able to fight off coronary heart issues later in life. The study analysed more than 36,000 people.

According to one of the lead researchers, young adulthood is a crucial period, when health issues like high blood pressure and cholesterol are extremely harmful. However, those who learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle to combat them have substantial health benefits throughout their life.

The researcher also highlighted the issues of why young adults mostly fail to get diagnosed on time, which makes it difficult to handle the problems.
Talking about the risks, the authors of the study stated that elevated levels of bad cholesterol or low density lipoprotein in young adulthood raises heart disease risk by 64 per cent. And a continued high systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure experienced in the arteries when heart muscles contract, and diastolic blood pressure, the pressure when the heart rests between heart beats, were linked to increased risk of heart failure by 37 and 21 per cent respectively.

While high BP and high cholesterol were not independently linked to the risk of stroke in young adults, however, raised levels of systolic and diastolic played a role in predicting the risk of stroke.

Those who have a genetic predisposition to the two health conditions need more monitoring and may also require them to take lipid lowering drugs and cholesterol lowering drugs. It may not be resolved completely simply with diet and exercise.

BP pill has potential to slow down Alzheimer's

A high blood pressure drug has the potential to slow down Alzheimer's disease by improving the flow of blood to parts of the brain linked to memory, a study suggests.

Researchers found the drug nilvadipine increased blood flow to the brain's memory and learning centre among people with Alzheimer's without affecting other parts of the brain.

The findings indicate that the known decrease in cerebral blood flow in patients with Alzheimer's can be reversed in some regions.

However, an important question is whether this observed increase in cerebral blood flow translates to clinical benefits, the researchers said.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.

The risk for the disease increases with age and the causes are largely unknown.

Previous research has shown that blood flow to the brain declines in early Alzheimer's disease.
Nilvadipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure.

Researchers sought to discover whether nilvadipine could help treat Alzheimer's disease by comparing the use of nilvadipine and a placebo among people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

They randomly assigned 44 participants to receive either nilvadipine or a placebo for 6 months.

Neither researchers nor the participants knew who received the drug or the placebo that was evenly divided among the 2 groups.

At the study's start after 6 months, researchers measured blood flow to specific regions of the brain using a unique magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique.

Results showed that blood flow to the hippocampus- the brain's memory and learning center-increased by 20 % among the nilvadipine group compared to the placebo group.

Blood flow to other regions of the brain was unchanged in both groups.

This high BP treatment holds promise as it doesn't appear to decrease blood flow to the brain, which could cause more harm than benefit, said an associate Prof.

Even though no medical treatment is without risk, getting treatment for high BP could be important to maintain brain health in patients with Alzheimer's disease, said the Prof.

Researchers note that sample sizes were too small and follow-up time too short to reliably study the effects of this cerebral blood flow increase on structural brain measures and cognitive measures.

Study participants were screened between 2013 and 2015 as part of a larger research project comparing nilvadipine to placebo among more than 500 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

In that larger project, effects on cerebral blood flow were not measured . Overall, no clinical benefit was noted with the use of nilvadipine.

However, a subgroup of patients with only mild symptoms of disease did show benefit, in the sense of a slower decline in memory.

Previous studies have hinted high blood pressure could reduce the risk of developing dementia.

The researchers think that beneficial effects on brain  blood flow could explain part of this effect.
