Young Adults, Beware Of Mild, Asymptomatic COVID-19 Infection: It Can Cause Long-Term Health Complications

It is a known fact that many patients who have recovered from COVID-19 infection suffer health complications in the long run. But these complications are usually associated with severe disease. It is also more common among older patients. But now, new research at the Appalachian State University highlights the possible long term health impacts of COVID-19 on young, relatively healthy adults who were not hospitalized and who only had minor symptoms due to the virus. 

Stiffness of arteries found in mild cases among healthy young adults

Increased stiffness of arteries in particular was found in young adults, which may impact heart health, and can also be important for other populations who may have had severe cases of the virus. This means that young, healthy adults with mild COVID-19 symptoms may increase their risk of cardiovascular complications which may continue for some time after COVID-19 infection.

Changes in blood vessel may also happen

While SARS-CoV-2, the virus known for causing the COIVD-19 pandemic, is mainly characterized by respiratory symptoms, other studies have recently shown changes to blood vessel function among young adults 3-4 weeks after being infected with SARS-CoV-2 . This has also been observed months after infection in older adults as well .

Blood supply to brain may be affected

Researchers found that the virus may have detrimental effects to arteries throughout the body, including in the carotid artery which supplies the brain with blood. This draws comparisons between SARS-CoV-2 and other acute bacterial and viral infections which alter arterial stiffness such as rheumatic fever, Kawasaki disease, pneumonia, H. Pylori, and lupus, all of which may persist long after symptoms have resolved.

Finding the cause

The researchers tested young adults 3-4 weeks after being infected with SARS-CoV-2. They used an ultrasound on the carotid artery and took recordings of that image for 10-15 heart beats. These recordings were analyzed on a computer software to find measures of carotid stiffness. For the control group, they used data from young healthy adults who were studied prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. As far as limitations of this study goes, the researchers do not know if the SARS-CoV-2 group had any innate decrements in arterial stiffness prior to contracting the virus. They also did not control for menstrual cycle or variations in contraceptive use in either group. However, previous research has indicated that contraceptive use and menstrual cycle fluctuations among young healthy females may not influence the outcome measures they were studying.

The researchers are following these young adults for 6 months after initial infection with SARS-CoV-2 to observe if and when the arterial health of these individuals is improving. The results of the longitudinal study will be interesting, as these adults’ symptomology may improve, yet their arterial health may not be recovering as quickly, which may have significance for their heart health.

Carbon in air pollution may cross placenta, affect baby's health


Carbon particles in polluted air can travel through a mother's placenta to the foetal side, which may lead to future health complications as the baby develops, according to a study. A team of researchers including those from Hasselt University in Belgium identified the presence of black carbon particles that are part of combustion-derived particulate matter in all the placenta samples they screened from 28 new mothers.

The study suggests that the placenta, which is a temporary organ that presents a natural barrier between mother and foetus during the entire pregnancy may not be as impermeable to environmental pollutants as thought before.

The researchers used a new scanning technique to find carbon particles accumulated on the foetus-side of the placenta, close to where the umbilical cord begins.

The carbon particle load found in the placenta was positively associated with the residential exposure of the mothers to the pollutants during gestation, the study noted.

The results, according to the researchers, indicate that particulate matter in the environment can cross the placental barrier towards the foetus, even during early and vulnerable stages of pregnancy.

The researchers caution that the direct effects induced by combustion-related pollutants in the environment "are at least partially responsible for observed detrimental health effects from early life on-wards."

"If you think that these are problems of Asian mega-cities, read on -- data presented in this paper were collected in Belgium!" tweeted Gregor Kos, an atmospheric analytical chemist at Concordia University in Canada, who was not involved in the study.

A study conducted last year by researchers at Queen Mary University of London in the UK found evidence of tiny particles of carbon, typically created by burning fossil fuels, in placentas.

Anger more harmful than sadness for older adults

Anger is more harmful than sadness for older adults and may lead to health complications — potentially increased inflammation which is associated with chronic illnesses like heart disease, arthritis and cancer, say researchers.

The study, shows that anger can lead to the development of chronic illnesses whereas sadness did not.

“Sadness may help older seniors adjust to challenges such as age-related physical and cognitive declines  because it can help them disengage from goals that are no longer attainable”, said study lead author.

For the study, the researchers analysed data from 226 older adults ages 59 to 93 from Montreal, Canada and grouped participants as being in early old age (59 to 79 years old) or advanced old age (80 years or older).

During the study, participants completed questionnaires about how angry or sad they felt.
The research examined whether anger and sadness contributed to inflammation, an immune response by the body to perceived threats, such as infection or tissue damage.

“We found that experiencing anger daily was related to higher levels of inflammation and chronic illness for people aged 80 or above, but not for younger seniors,” added study co-author.

“Younger seniors may be able to use that anger as fuel to overcome life’s challenges and emerging age-related losses and that can keep them healthier”, the author added.

The researchers suggest that education and therapy might help older adults reduce anger by regulating their emotions or by offering better coping strategies to manage the inevitable changes that accompany ageing.
