Indian scientists develop world’s 1st robotic hand for paralytics

Scientists at the IIT-Kanpur have ventured into the world’s first robotic hand for the rehabilitation of stroke patients and have finished their tests on it.

The device is a two-finger robotic hand (exoskeleton) that uses a four-bar mechanism and has four degrees of freedom (DOF).

Professors who have achieved this feat, explain that “The exoskeleton can be used by a patient on the hand. It uses brain signals, with the help of the brain computer interface (BCI) that is worn on the head, and helps paralysed patients to open and close the movement of their thumb, forefinger and middle fingers for physical practice.”

The exoskeleton is operated by an MEGA microcontroller of 300 Mhz and powered by a battery. The teachers say that the device will cost around Rs 15,000.

For the exoskeleton, the duo has partnered with the University of Ulster, based in the United Kingdom, and their teacher who belongs to Gorakhpur.

The device has sensors that control the pressure of the fingertip applied by the patient. If the patient can close or move the finger, the device follows the movement passively. If it does not, then the device actively forces the finger to close, while taking BCI instructions using signals.

Regarding the design of the device, the movement of degrees of freedom of the exoskeleton is based on the movement of the human finger while manipulating a coin in the hands. The joints in the device consist of four bars to give a human movement.

The design and development of an exoskeleton robot for the support and rehabilitation of human hands is a Rs 55 lakh MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Department) and the British Council (the UK) project which was approved in 2018.

4 Pressure Points to Get Rid of a Blocked Nose

Nobody likes having a blocked, stuffy nose, and I’m definitely down for the count on this particular ailment. I can’t stand not being able to sleep or breathe properly, and all I can think of is how to get rid of it.
While most of us would think of turning to over-the-counter nasal sprays or drugs, the stark reality is that these are chemical solutions, which have side effects and can be addictive, resulting in you continuing to take them when you don’t need to.

Consider an alternative approach that’s easy to master, is less invasive and more effective. It is based on acupressure principles, and all you need to do is apply gentle pressure to four points of the face to help you clear your nose:
General Guidelines
1. Use your fingertips to apply gentle pressure.
2. Use rotational movements. In fact, it’s a pushing-releasing rotation that’s needed.
3. You should not feel any pain.
4. Repeat the cycle three times.

Pressure Point 1 – Cavity at the corner of the nostrils
Instructions
1. Gently push your nostrils together using a rotating movement. As you do this, you should almost be opening and closing them.
2. Repeat the movement 10 times over
Tip: Refrain from pushing on the nose cartilage. Your attention should be focused on the bottom part of the nostrils.
Pressure Point 2 – Just below the tear ducts
Instructions
1. Perform a gentle rotation at this point 10 times over.
2. Do not lift your fingers while performing the rotation – simply move the skin so you feel the corner of your eyes as you push.

Pressure Point 3 - Behind the earlobe
Instructions
1. Find the pressure point correctly. It’s located behind your ear, in the cavity just below the cartilage.
2. Push and release the point 10 times. Do not apply pressure to the cartilage.
Tip: This needs to be a subtle movement.
Pressure Point 4 – Earlobe
Instructions
1. Gently massage the earlobe 10 times.

What’s next?
Go through all of the above pressure points three times over, and you should feel immediate symptom relief. Should you require more relief, repeat the entire process after 10 minutes.
Note that you can use this simple, safe technique anywhere, and at any time. In addition to it being free, it’s also empowering to know that there are simple ways of being able to heal yourself. Be sure to share this knowledge with someone dear to you should it work for you.

Ability to find source of pain varies across the body

A new study has revealed that identifying where it hurts known as 'spatial acuity' differs across the body parts.

The researchers produced the first systematic map of how acuity for pain is distributed across the body and found that forehead and fingertips are the most sensitive parts.

Dr Flavia Mancini of the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience said that acuity for touch has been known for more than a century and tested daily in neurology to assess the state of sensory nerves on the body but it is striking that until now nobody had done the same for pain.

He further explained that the high pain acuity of the fingertips is something of a mystery and requires advance exploration.

Senior author Dr Giandomenico Iannetti of the UCL Department of Neuroscience said that touch and pain are mediated by different sensory systems and while tactile acuity has been well studied, pain acuity has been largely ignored.

The findings have important implications for the assessment of both acute and chronic pain.
The study is published in the journal Annals of Neurology.
