“Brain Flossing” Will Help You Chill Out In Minutes

 Flossing your teeth leaves your mouth feeling clean and refreshed, so imagine how good it would feel if you could do the same thing to your brain. Even though you can’t literally get in there with dental floss (bummer) you can create a similar effect with “bilateral stimulation” music — a trend that’s going viral on TikTok that’s said to help improve anxiety, stress, and focus.

Also called “brain flossing” or “brain massage,” bilateral stimulation is a type of sound that bounces between your right and left ears. It creates a panning effect that makes it seem like the tune is gliding from one side of your brain to the other, kind of like floss. For a good example, check out this link from TikTok creator @flaircontentbyamber.

If you have anxiety, ruminating thoughts, or distracting symptoms of ADHD, then you might experience an immediate sense of calm while listening to bilateral music — and that’s all part of its appeal. Under @flaircontentbyamber’s video, one person said, “Why did this make me start crying? Pure relief.” Another wrote, “It quiets my ADHD and lets me focus.”

Creator @living.withadhd also posted a bilateral song, and it’s since gained nearly 500,000 likes. “I can literally feel it moving from one side of my brain to the other,” one person wrote in the comments. Another said, “This is the first time I’ve felt that flossing/pulling/tingling feeling in my frontal lobes. Weird but nice.” Here’s what to know about brain flossing, according to an expert.

 

Why Does “Brain Flossing” Feel So Good?

 Brain flossing.                                                                       According to Dr. Caroline Fenkel, LCSW, a therapist and chief clinical officer at Charlie Health, bilateral music is designed to engage both the right and left hemispheres of your brain in a specific pattern that promotes relaxation, focus, and even emotional processing.

“The rhythmic left-right stimulation helps calm the nervous system, similar to how bilateral stimulation is used in therapies like EMDR [eye movement desensitization and reprocessing],” she tells Bustle. “It supports emotional processing [...] making it easier to work through feelings without being overwhelmed.”

That’s why this type of music could lead to an emotional release, like a big sigh or a sob sesh, but it can also feel soothing when you’re stressed. As Fenkel says, it helps you feel relaxed because it quiets racing thoughts, and that’s why it can also prep your brain for rest. The bouncy nature of the music helps block out that incessant, internal chatter that might keep you up at night.

Some say this type of music immediately quiets their mind in a way they never thought possible, “similar to the effects of meditation or deep breathing,” says Fenkel. “Some research suggests it may also influence brainwave activity, shifting the brain into a calmer state.”

 The Best Times To Brain Floss

 If you’re in the mood to chill, pull up a bilateral song on TikTok or YouTube. While it’s best to listen with headphones, you can also hold your phone horizontally in front of you to get the same effect as the track bounces between your phone’s speakers.

You can listen anytime, anywhere, even if you don’t have anxiety or ADHD. “Anyone can listen to bilateral music,” says Fenkel. “It’s a simple, non-invasive tool that can support focus, relaxation, and emotional regulation.”

Try it while traveling to soothe anxiety, while studying to block out annoying noises, or before bed when you want to keep your brain nice and quiet so you can quickly nod off. “Some people also use it during meditation or mindfulness practices to deepen relaxation,” she says. Simply kick back, listen, and let our brain get flossed.

How beneficial is yoga for the brain?

While aerobics has long been known for strengthening the brain and the growth of neurons, only a few studies have examined how yoga affects the brain. A review of the science finds evidence that yoga enhances many of the same brain structures and functions that benefit from aerobic exercise.

The review has been published in the journal Brain Plasticity. Focusing on 11 studies of the relationship between yoga practice and brain health. Five of the studies engaged individuals with no background in yoga practice in one or more yoga sessions per week over a period of 10-24 weeks, comparing brain health at the beginning and end of the intervention. The other studies measured brain differences between individuals who regularly practice yoga and those who don't.

Each of the studies used brain-imaging techniques such as MRI, functional MRI or single-photon emission computerized tomography. All involved Hatha yoga, which includes body movements, meditation and breathing exercises.

"From these 11 studies, we identified some brain regions that consistently come up, and they are surprisingly not very different from what we see with exercise research," said University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Neha Gothe, who led the research with Wayne State University psychology professor Jessica Damoiseaux.

Though many of the studies are exploratory and not conclusive, the research points to other important brain changes associated with regular yoga practice, Damoiseaux said.

The amygdala, a brain structure that contributes to emotional regulation, tends to be larger in yoga practitioners than in their peers who do not practice yoga. The prefrontal cortex, cingulate cortex and brain networks such as the default mode network also tend to be larger or more efficient in those who regularly practice yoga.

Like the amygdala, the cingulate cortex is part of the limbic system, a circuit of structures that plays a key role in emotional regulation, learning and memory, she said.

The studies also find that the brain changes seen in individuals practicing yoga are associated with better performance on cognitive tests or measures of emotional regulation.

The discovery that yoga may have similar effects on the brain to aerobic exercise is intriguing and warrants more study, Gothe said.

"Yoga is not aerobic in nature, so there must be other mechanisms leading to these brain changes," she said. "So far, we don't have the evidence to identify what those mechanisms are."

Yoga helps people with or without anxiety disorders manage their stress, Gothe said.

"The practice of yoga helps improve emotional regulation to reduce stress, anxiety and depression," she said. "And that seems to improve brain functioning."

Alcohol dependency in young adults may have long-lasting effects

A study says that young adults with symptoms of alcohol dependence may see health effects late in life, even decades after conquering their problem drinking.

Researchers found that, of 664 U.S. male veterans, those who had symptoms of alcohol dependence for at least five years in young adulthood generally had poorer physical and mental health by the time they were in their 60s.

And that was true even if they'd gotten control over their drinking problems by the age of 30.

The findings are surprising, said lead researcher Randy Haber.
It's clear that people's lives improve when alcohol dependence goes into remission, Haber pointed out, but it is not clear whether there are hidden consequences that remain after heavy drinking has ceased. For instance, evidence shows that both brain and body are affected by excessive drinking, but we don't know how long these effects last.

The new findings suggest that years of alcohol dependence during young adulthood result in silent but "permanent" injuries that, in later life, appear to result in serious health problems, according to Haber.

The findings are based on men taking part in a larger study of Vietnam-era veterans. Haber's team focused on 368 men who did not report any symptoms of alcohol dependence at any point in adulthood, 221 who had at least three symptoms of dependence in young adulthood, and middle-age and 75 who had symptoms in early adulthood but not after the age of 30. Overall, the study found that men who had alcohol dependence symptoms for at least five years in early adulthood scored lower on standard measures of both physical and mental health once they'd reached their 60s.

For example, those with alcohol dependence in young adulthood had, on average, three medical conditions in later life whereas those without this history reported two.

In addition, their scores on a depression scale were about twice as high. Most important, these effects were seen even among men who'd been free of dependence symptoms for several decades.
The reasons are unclear.

But, Haber said, other studies have shown that chronic drinking may injure parts of the brain involved in emotional regulation, self-control and decision-making. It's possible, he noted, that years of alcohol exposure in early adulthood could have lasting effects on those brain areas.

Still, Haber stressed that this study is reporting "averages" and not what any one person is destined for.

He said that people who not only quit problem drinking but also turn their lifestyle around, eating well, not smoking and just generally "taking care of themselves," will likely see health benefits that last into late life.

Plus, he said, there is a "whole body of literature" showing that when people with alcohol dependence go into recovery, their lives improve in almost every area.

"If you have entered (alcohol dependence) recovery, keep going," Haber said. "Live your life to its fullest."
