10 Warning Signs of Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the ninth most common cancer in the world, with the highest rates being in North America and Europe. This is why you need to pay attention to all possible signs and symptoms so that you can detect it before it is too late. Here's what you need to pay attention to:

1. Blood in Your Urine
Bloody pee is the primary sign of bladder cancer. Urine color may range from pink to red to dark brown, and you often won't be able to see it with the naked eye. Blood in your urine may also mean you have a bladder infection, UTI or even kidney stones.

2. Pelvic Pain
If a malign tumor grows within your bladder wall, pressure or pain may be present. Make sure to tell your doctor about ongoing pelvic pain or a strange feeling of pressure, particularly if it’s accompanied by any other symptoms.

3. Frequent Urination
Having to get up to pee all the time could be a sign of an infection. However, it could also indicate that bladder cancer is developing inside of you.

4. Swollen Feet
Swelling in the ankles or feet is a sign that bladder cancer may have advanced and metastasized to other parts of your body. What's more, swollen feet may also be a symptom of either bladder or kidney cancer.

5. Loss of Appetite or Weight
Common with many cancers, a loss of weight or appetite may mean that cancer cells have formed inside of you. Sudden and unexplainable changes in your eating habits or weight should be a red flag, so make sure to visit a physician as soon as possible.

6. Feeling Weak or Fatigued
Bladder cancer may lead to fluid accumulating in your body, which in turn can make you feel lethargic, which is why you should visit a doctor if you're feeling tired for no apparent reason.

7. Unable to Pass Urine
A blockage in your urinary tract might be preventing your bladder from passing urine. If this is the case for you, you should get examined to determine if it’s being caused by a tumorous growth, cyst, kidney stone or some other condition.

8. Feeling of Having to Pee
What this means is that even though your bladder is empty, you still often feel an urgent need to pee. If this keeps happening to you on a regular basis, visit a health professional.

9. Burning or Pain During Urination
A painful, burning sensation during urination is linked to many types of illnesses, so you should never just wait for this symptom to disappear of its own accord. In fact, this symptom is present in 3 different kinds of cancers – bladder, kidney, and prostate.

10. Back Pain
Back pain may be a sign that bladder cancer has entered a more advanced stage, but it may also indicate that you have a kidney infection or some other urological condition, so you should visit a doctor as soon as possible.

Study reveals lower levels of lymphocyte blood cells may indicate increased death risk

Lower levels of lymphocyte blood cells in a condition called lymphopenia, could be an early warning fir future illness according to a recent study. The reduced count of the immune cells was associated with a 60% increase in death from any cause.

The study showed that participants with lymphopenia were at high risk of dying from any cause, regardless of any other risk factor for all-cause mortality including age, says one of the author.

Lymphopenia is often detected during routine blood tests, and patients are nit usually referred for further investigation because the value of lymphopenia as a predictor of future health was not known.

Researchers included 108,135 people of Danish descent aged 20-100 years who were enrolled in the study between 2003 and 2015. An incidental finding of a low lymphocyte count was associated with a 1.6 fold increase in the risk of death from any cause and 1.6 tp 2.8 fold increased risk of death from cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, infections and other causes. During the study period, a total of 10,372 people died.

Older age was associated with decreasing lymphocyte counts.

The link between lymphopenia and death may be because of reduced immune capacity to survive potentially lethal diseases. Lymphopenia could also indicate frailty which could lead to illness and death.

The researchers hope their findings may help doctors identify at-risk people. Using the absolute 2-year risks of all-cause mortality, physicians can identify high-risk individuals with lymphopenia ( e.g., smokers older than 8- years) who might benefit from additional surveillance, they write, although the benefits of such surveillance are not known.

Seizures may be predicted in people with epilepsy

Scientists have discovered a pattern of molecules that appear in the blood before seizures, which may lead to the development of an early warning system for epilepsy patients.

Researchers have discovered molecules in the blood that are higher in people with epilepsy before a seizure happens. These molecules are fragments of transfer RNAs (tRNAs), a chemical closely related to DNA that performs an important role in building proteins within the cell.

As per researchers involved in this study, tRNAs are cut into fragments when cells are stressed. Higher levels of the fragments in the blood could reflect that brain cells are under stress in the build-up to a seizure event.

Using blood samples from people with epilepsy, the researchers found that fragment levels of three tRNAs “spike” in the blood many hours before a seizure.

“People with epilepsy often report that one of the most difficult aspects of living with the disease is never knowing when a seizure will occur,” said an investigator, and the study’s lead author.

“The results of this study are very promising. We hope that our tRNA research will be a key first step toward developing an early warning system.”

The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy.

“New technologies to remove the unpredictability of uncontrolled seizures for people with epilepsy are a very real possibility,” said a co-author on the paper.
