Health chief calls for drastic intervention to cut salt intake

A doctor has urged ministers to force food firms to prominently display the salt content of their products in a bid to reduce deaths from heart attacks and strokes.

All food stuffs should carry traffic-light-style labelling showing whether they have high, medium or low levels of salt to help shoppers make healthier choices, said the Dr.

Large amounts of salt can cause high blood pressure, the single biggest cause of heart attacks and strokes, which between them kill more people than anything else.

“There’s much, much more that can still be done to reduce salt in food. We’d be very supportive of labelling so people can easily see [salt content]. We support clear front-of-pack labelling using traffic lights, as it makes salt content clear,” the Dr. said.

Salt is already included alongside fat and sugar in the red, amber and green labels used by some supermarkets, but the Dr. believes its threat to health is so severe it needs to be highlighted separately.

Another expert attacked manufacturers for doing too little to strip salt from their products. “I’m concerned about food companies’ slow progress in meeting targets for salt reduction. They’ve not made the progress that was hoped for. People are still consuming too much salt. It’s around 8g a day per person when ideally it should be 6g. Too much salt means high blood pressure and more strokes and heart attacks.”

Salt levels in some foods have recently been reduced. For example, the Dr. said, bread now has 50% less salt. But he added: “We can take more salt out of food. We want to see a major effort by food manufacturers.”

Every 1g reduction in people’s average salt intake has been estimated to prevent 7,000 deaths a year from strokes and heart attacks – and save a lot of money for the government.

A professor of cardiovascular medicine  backed the call for producers to be forced to display salt content as part of a new mandatory traffic light system. But he accused the government of doing far too little to ensure firms meet the 2014 targets and mistakenly relying on voluntary agreements.

Signs that Indicate Your Body Wants You to Cut Back on Salt

If you've just been diagnosed with high blood pressure, this is one clear sign that you may be overdoing it on the salt. Other than this, some of the other signs which cautions are-

1. Your ring  feels too tight suddenly-

If the ring on your finger suddenly feels two sizes too small, it could very well be caused by water retention, which can happen when you load up on salt. The body works in a complex way. It must maintain the balance of fluids and electrolytes. Therefore loading up on sodium may trigger your brain to release hormones that tell your body to hold onto as much water as possible.
2. Your mouth is dry One of the reasons why your mouth may feel dry is because of salt. After loading up on foods that are rich in sodium, your body will start to sense that your salt and water levels are off. Consequently, your brains sends out thirst signals as drinking more water will have things returned back to normal.
3. You have a headache
A  study published in the British Medical Journey found that there's a strong link between high blood pressure and headaches. It was found that heavy salt eaters were more likely to get a headache, even if their blood pressure was normal. In the study, adults who ate 3,500mg of sodium per day had nearly a third more headaches in comparison to those who only took in 1,500 mg. So, if you do feel a throbbing headache coming on, try cutting back on the salt.
 4. You feel a need to keep going to the bathroom
Drinking too much water may be the reason you need to urinate so often. Yet it is not the only cause. Eating too much salt can have the same effect. When you include too much salt your kidneys have to work overtime in order to clear the extra salt out, which may cause you to pee more than usual.
5. Your brain is in a fog
If you are overdoing it on salt, you may end up dehydrated. As a result, dehydration may affect your ability to think clearly. According to a  study published in the Journal of Nutrition, mildly dehydrated women performed worse on cognitive tests measuring concentration, memory, reasoning and reaction time compared to when they were hydrated. The study also found that the dehydration sent their moods plummeting too.
Tip
No matter what symptoms you are dealing with, one of the best ways to slash your sodium is to cut back on processed foods and drink more water. This will allow your body to catch up and get back into balance. Once your sodium is back to normal again, try to keep your salt intake under control. The U.S. dietary guidelines recommend eating less than 2,300mg per day.

13-natural-ways-reduce-blood-pressure

Go for power walks, as it helps your heart to use oxygen efficiently, so it doesn't have to work hard to pump blood.

Breathe right, slow breathing & meditative practices like yoga, tai chi, decrease stress hormones, which elevate renin, a kidney enzyme that raises blood pressure. So try these breathing techniques for five minutes in the morning and at night. Inhale deeply and expand your belly. Exhale and release all of your tension.

Eat potatoes: Loading up on potassium-rich fruits and vegetables like potato, is an important part of any blood pressure-lowering program, says a Dr.

Cut down on salt: Lower salt intake to 1,500 mg daily, says a research nutritionist.

Indulge in dark chocolate: Dark chocolate varieties contain flavanols that make blood vessels more elastic. In one study, 18 percent of patients who ate it everyday saw a considerable decrease in their blood pressure.

Take a supplement: In a review of 12 studies, researchers found that coenzyme Q10 reduced blood pressure by up to 17 mmhg over 10 mmhg.

Reduce alcohol intake: According to a review of 15 studies, the less you drink, the lower your blood pressure will drop - to a point.

Switch to decaf coffee: A study found that caffeine consumption of 500 mg - roughly three 8-ounce cups of coffee - increased blood pressure by 4 mmhg, and that effect lasted until bedtime.

Drink tea: Study participants who sipped 3 cups of a hibiscus tea daily lowered systolic blood pressure by 7 points in 6 weeks on average, said researchers from a University - results on par with many prescription medications.

Work (a bit) less: Putting in more than 41 hours per week at the office raises your risk of hypertension by 15 percent, according to a  study of 24,205  residents.

Relax with music: Listening to soothing classical, Celtic, or Indian music for 30 minutes daily while breathing slowly helps lower blood pressure, according to researchers.

Seek help for snoring:  researchers found that many sleep apnea sufferers had high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that can boost blood pressure.

Jump for soy: A study found for the first time that replacing some of the refined carbohydrates in your diet with foods high in soy or milk protein, such as low-fat dairy, can bring down systolic blood pressure if you have hypertension or prehypertension.
