Techniques That Can Help Relieve Shortness of Breath

Everyone has experienced shortness of breath at least once in their life, be it after intensive exercise, due to anxiety or as a result of a health condition. Many otherwise healthy people can sometimes experience shortness of breath after climbing stairs, running or other unusually-demanding physical activities.

In the end, breathlessness can catch you by surprise anywhere anytime. Luckily, there are things you can do to relieve dyspnea (the scientific term for shortness of breath). Here are 4 effective relief techniques that can help you get rid of this annoying symptom fast. And the best thing about them is - no special equipment needed.

1. Pursed Lip Breathing
This simple method will let you slow down your breathing when you’re feeling short of breath, which will help you start breathing more deeply and effectively. You can do it anywhere anytime, and it is particularly effective at boosting the circulation of air in your lungs, which makes it especially helpful after strenuous activities, be it lifting things, climbing stairs or bending forward.

Here’s how you can do this exercise:

Step 1. Relax your neck and shoulders.
Step 2. Counting to 2, slowly and steadily breathe in through your nostrils, mouth closed.
Step 3. Round your lips, as if you’re about to blow on a dandelion.
Step 4. Counting to 4, slowly breathe out while maintaining the shape of the lips. Repeat for at least 10 rounds.

2. Leaning Forward with the Support of a Table
This technique is optimal for when you’re at home. You will need a table, a chair and a pillow to do it. It’s very simple and can really soothe your lungs and calm your breath and heartbeat. It will also relax your body, which yields in an overall calming effect.

This is how you do it:

Step 1. Sit on a chair facing a table, keep your feet on the floor. Place a pillow on the table in front of you.
Step 2. Lean with your chest forward. Place your arms on the table and rest your head on the pillow. You can slowly move your head from side to side, as if shaking it to say “no”, but slower. This tilt will massage your forehead and let your neck relax, opening up the airways even more.
Breathe as slowly as you can and try to relax. Stay in this position as long as you need, but no less than 5 minutes.

3. Standing With a Supported Back
If you got caught by surprise by a sudden attack of breathlessness, and you have nothing around you, but a wall, do not fear. A wall will do, as simply standing with the support of any vertical object can help you relax your airways as well.

Instructions:

Step 1. Stand with your back next to a wall, resting your lower, upper back and hips against the wall.
Step 2. With your feet about shoulder width apart, place your hands on the thighs, tilting your head a tiny bit forward. Try to relax and breathe as slowly as you can.
Step 3. Dangle and move your arms slowly in front of you. This will relax your upper body and may help normalize your breathing faster.

4. Diaphragm Breathing
When your lungs are stressed and compressed, you’re trying to catch your breath, but you can’t seem to normalize your breathing pattern, try diaphragm breathing. It will help you switch gears and breathe normally faster. It’s best to do this exercise at home.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1. Sit on a chair with your knees bent comfortably and upper body relaxed.
Step 2. Put one hand on your belly and breathe in through the nose. Pay attention to how you belly is inflating and deflating as you breathe.
Step 3. On an exhale, activate your abdominal muscles and notice how your belly is flatter. Round your lips and breathe out through your mouth.

Tip: You should focus on the exhale more than on the inhale. Do this exercise for 5 minutes.
Extra! Sleep In a Comfortable and Supported Position

It is not uncommon for people to experience shortness of breath during sleep. It can even wake you up during the night, which is not only annoying, but also terribly disruptive for your sleep. Both of the following sleeping positions will help your airways relax, which will assist breathing.

Position 1. Sleep on your side, placing a pillow or blanket between your legs and keep the head elevated by a pillow just enough to maintain a straight spine from the lower back to the neck.

Position 2. Lie down on your back. Place a pillow under your knees, to keep them slightly bent. Rest your head on another pillow, so that it won’t strain your neck.

If you persist waking up during the night because you experience breathlessness, we highly recommend you to visit a doctor, as you might be suffering from sleep apnea. In general, dyspnea can be a symptom of a serious underlying condition, so if you experience it often, consider a consultation with a doctor.

Do you have a desk job? Beware of sciatica

Sciatica is a condition that causes an ache or tingling down the back, hips, thighs and all the way through the legs. This pain is usually the result of a compression or inflammation of the sciatic nerve. This is the longest nerve in the body. If you look around, you will notice that many people around you seem to be complaining of this kind of pain. One major reason for this may be long sitting hours.

Most people with desk jobs tend to sit continuously in one position without moving. This may affect or even damage the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica pain. A sedentary lifestyle and long hours before the television also contributes to this problem.

What you need to do is move around, get up at regular intervals, do some stretches or at least get an ergonomic chair. But first, let us see what sciatica is all about.

Causes and Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica is caused by a compressed sciatic nerve; this compression can occur due to the herniation of the lumbar disc and other conditions like:

Irritation of the nerve from adjacent bones

Tumours

Internal bleeding

Infections

Degenerative arthritis

Piriformis syndrome

Spondylolisthesis

Pregnancy

Sciatic nerve pain is characterized by pain that radiates from the lower spine down the back of the legs causing discomfort, pain and tingling along the sciatic nerve and its branches.

Diagnosis of Sciatica

The diagnosis of sciatica involves a series of muscle tests and the following imaging tests to pinpoint the cause of sciatica:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

Spinal X-ray to determine the presence of tumours

Computerized tomography (CT) scan

Treatment of Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom, not a condition, which means that its treatment begins with identifying the root cause of the pain.

Here are some common treatment strategies that many people follow:

Home remedies like stretching, simple exercises, alternating hot and cold packs, over-the-counter pain medications and rest

Physical therapy for sciatica pain that may last for more than a week

More aggressive treatments like prescription pain medications or corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation

Natural remedies, acupuncture and massage to relieve pain and inflammation

Maintaining a good posture is essential for preventing back pain and related conditions. It is also essential to follow a healthy lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. Individuals with sciatica may also benefit from yoga, which offers numerous poses for maintaining good posture.

Easy Exercises to Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Prevention is better than cure. It is very true for carpal tunnel. This terribly painful and disabling condition affects 5% of the population and is very difficult to treat. Anyone, but particularly office workers, artists and manufacture workers can be affected by the condition.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve (the nerve connecting the wrist and the palm, see diagram below) is compressed as a result of friction or inflammation.
carpal tunnel diagram

Exercise 1: Flex and Extend

Step 1. Hold your arm straight in front of you, palms of facing down.
Step 2. Flex your wrist down so that the fingers point down. Use the other hand to increase the stretch.
Step 3. Hold for 15-30 seconds.
Step 4. Relax and extend the fingers.
Step 5. Now do the same in the other direction. Bend your wrist up so that your fingers are directed towards the sky, using your other hand to enhance the stretch.
Step 6. Hold for 15-30 seconds.

Step 7. Relax and extend the fingers.
Repeat 10 times. You can repeat the exercise up to 3 times a day.

Exercise 2: Tendon Workout

Step 1. Bend your elbow, but keep your wrist straight, your fingers together and pointing up, and your thumb relaxed.
Step 2. Curl your fingers in making an exaggerated fist, so that the fingertips touch the inside of palm.
Step 3. Straighten the fingers and make your hand into an L-shape.
Step 4. Fold your fingers with straight fingers, now making a flat fist with your thumb now tucked in.

Repeat 10 times, up to 2-3 times a day.

Exercise 3: Wrist Resistance Exercise

Step 1. Sit down at a table.
Step 2. Rest your left arm at the table, elbow bent, palm facing down.
Step 3. Put your right hand across the knuckles of the left hand at a 90-degree angle (your hands make a plus sign).
Step 4. Lift your bottom hand up, but keep it steady with your top hand.

Repeat a few times a day.

Some tips for carpal tunnel in the next post.

Back pain causes: Painful symptoms could be a result of this serious health problem

Back pain is common and normally improves within a few weeks or months, but there are a variety of different things it can be caused by - some more serious than others. Your doctor will be able to to determine what the cause is when evaluating your back.

In most cases the pain is not caused by anything serious and will usually get better over time.

“Non-specific” back pain, where there is no obvious cause, tends to be down to posture, and tends to get better or worse depending on your position.

Conditions such as a slipped disc can also cause back pain. But in very rare cases, beck pain can be a sign of a serious problem - one of these being a broken bone in the spine.

According to experts, the main clinical symptoms of a fracture in the spine can include sudden onset of back pain.

Pain worsening with standing or walking, pain reducing after lying on your back, limited spinal mobility, height loss and deformity and disability can also be symptoms of a broken spine.

If you see your GP with back pain, they will look for signs of a broke bone in the spine.

Other more serious problems linked to back pain include an infection, cauda equine syndrome (where the nerves in the lower back become severely compressed), and cancer.

Fibromyalgia and osteoporosis can also cause lower back pain, but Boots WedMD also notes a more serious cause - cauda equine syndrome. It describes the condition as a “medical emergency”.

It explains: “Disc material expands into the spinal canal, which compresses the nerves. A person experiences pain, possible loss of sensation and bowel or blaster dysfunction. This can include inability to control urination, causing incontinence, or the inability to begin urination.”

Other possible causes of cauda equine syndrome indulge a spinal lesion or tumour, a spinal infection, inflammation, haemorrhage or fracture, or a birth defect such as an abnormal connection between blood vessels.

Symptoms of the condition may vary and come on slowly. You may also experience pain, numbness or weakness in one o both legs that causes you to stumble or have trouble getting up from a chair.
Recent problems with bladder or bowel function, such as trouble eliminating urine or water or trouble holding it in, could also be signs.

The doctor has four tips that may help reduce your backache and speed up your recovery. It lists the following:
Stay as active as possible and try to continue your daily activities - this is one of the most important things you can do, as resting for long periods is likely to make the pain worse.

Try exercises and stretches for back pain; other activities such as walking, swimming, yoga and pilates may also be helpful.

Take anti-inflammatory painkillers, such as ibuprofen - remember to check the medicine is safe for you to take first and ask a pharmacist if you’re not sure.

Use hot or cold compression packs for short-term relief - you can buy these from your local pharmacy, or a hot water bottle and bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth will work just as well.

The health body adds: “Although it can be difficult, it helps if you stay optimistic and recognise that your pain should get better, as people who manage to stay positive despite their pain tend to recover quicker.

If you develop any of the symptoms of cauda equine syndrome you should seek medical advice immediately or visit the accident and emergency department of your nearest hospital.

In the majority of cases, back pain is not caused by anything serious and will usually get better over time.

A GP can examine your back and discuss possible treatments, but there are things you can do at home to relieve it.
