Exercising while pregnant may yield benefits once the woman finally gives birth, at least according to a new study.

Researchers from Spain divided around 500 women into two groups — the first group was asked to participate in moderate exercise sessions three times a week with the help of a professional. Their routine was based on recommendations by the Obstetricians.

Meanwhile, the other group had no such physical intervention, merely routine education about proper nutrition and physical activity during prenatal checkups.

Exercise May Lead To Shorter Labor Periods

The results? Women who exercised even just three times per week while they're pregnant are more likely to experience shorter labor than those who don't. The researchers discovered significant changes when it comes to the labor room. The first stage was, on average, 53 minutes shorter for the women who exercised compared with the other group.

The changes go beyond the first stage. The total average labor time of the first group was also nearly an hour shorter than the other group. Plus the woman who exercised were also less likely to require an epidural, a procedure where a drug or contrast agent is injected into the spinal cord's epidural space to block pain.

"A supervised physical exercise program throughout pregnancy decreased the duration of the first phase of labor as well as total time of the first two phases together, leading to a decrease in total labor time," the study concludes.

Another difference between the two groups the researchers noticed was that the women who didn't exercise during their pregnancy reported higher weight gain.

Exercising While Pregnant

Exercise is an important part of pregnancy. The government recommends that pregnant women engage in physical activity for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes each week. These activities include brisk-walking, dancing, housework, and other chores. The CDC says "you can break it up into smaller chunks of time during the day. As long as you're doing your activity at a moderate or vigorous effort for at least 10 minutes at a time."

Needless to say that pregnant women should not partake in exercises willy-nilly. They must first approach their doctor to avoid complications as much as possible. Especially for women who already have certain diseases, exercising might cause more harm than good. Pregnant women who were very active before their pregnancy may continue doing the same physical activities but must first check with their health care provider.

Strong bonding with grandparents eases depression

A new study has claimed that grandparents and grandchildren's strong relationship has significant effects on well being of both, long into grandchildren's adulthood.

An assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and the Institute on Ageing , who will present the study,  said that they found that an emotionally close grandparent-adult grandchild relationship was associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations.

She said that the greater emotional support grandparents and adult grandchildren received from one another, the better their psychological health.

The study also revealed that giving tangible support to or receiving it from their grandchildren affected the psychological well-being of grandparents but not grandchildren.

Tangible support, also called functional solidarity or instrumental support, includes anything from rides to the store and money to assistance with household chores and advice.

They also said that grandparents who experienced the sharpest increases in depressive symptoms over time received tangible support, but did not give it.

She asserted that there is a saying that it's better to give than to receive.

She said that their results support that folk wisdom — if a grandparent gets help, but can't give it, he or she feels badly.

She explained that the grandparents expect to be able to help their grandchildren, even when their grandchildren are grown, and it's frustrating and depressing for them to instead be dependent on their grandchildren.

In their study, the researchers used data from the Longitudinal Study of Generations, a survey of 3- and 4-generation U.S. families that included seven waves of data collection between 1985 and 2004.

The sample was comprised of 376 grandparents and 340 grandchildren. The average grandparent was born in 1917 and the average grandchild in 1963, making them 77 years old and 31 years old, respectively, at the midpoint of the study in 1994.

DOs AND DON'TS FOR DEMENTIA

DOs
stick to a routine. A person with dementia fears changes. When making a schedule, consider the person's interest & previous life routine.

Stimulate their brain constantly. They can be encourages to do the Sudoko, read the newspaper, solve puzzles, listen to music, watch TV. Let them smell coffee brewing, give them a massage once in a while. hang pictures of the family on the walls where they can see them. Have  a room which has a good view of the outside so that they know what time of the day it is.

Visitors can help, but ask them to come at a specific time. Brief them about the condition of the patient.

Dementia can cause loss of bowel and bladder control in the patient. Seek help from the physician to evaluate it. Toilet re-training will help. a diaper or urinary catheter can help to some extent.

If the person is confined to his bed, then he can be sponge bathed, if he is mobile, encourage daily bathing. avoid evening & late night baths.

DONT's

don't just confine patients to a room. Let them eat at the dining table, get them to do chores such as watering plants, etc. The practice of confining the patient to a room is recommended only in the later stages of the disease.
