5 Benefits of Legs Up the Wall

If you've never tried yoga but you would like to, this easy pose may interest you. Known as Viparita Karana asana in Sanskrit, or legs-up-the-wall pose in English, it has long received mainstream attention from running enthusiasts and those who sit down all day. The reason? It works wonders for tense bodies that need a little rejuvenation. You don't need to attend a class or workshop to reap the benefits of this pose because all you need is a wall. Let's take a look at what good this pose can do for you:

legs up the wall pose
1. Improves Digestion
Movement in the abdomen helps to massage the intestine which helps fight constipation and boosts digestion. Your appetite may also increase due to better, and consequently, quicker elimination of digested food.
2. Promotes Healthy Circulation
As this is considered to be an inverted pose, blood flow increases to the upper part of the body, bringing a rush of oxygen with it. Your lymphatic system also gets a good flush. This helps to reduce the swelling in the lower extremities and can assist with blood pressure problems.

3. Aids in Pain Relief
This pose works the muscles in the pelvis and helps to strengthen the reproductive organs, ease menstrual cramps and symptoms of menopause. It also exercises stiff joints beneficial for those who suffer from arthritis or fibromyalgia. Leg cramping can subside with regular practice. This pose also aids with headache relief and prevention, especially those caused by slow-moving blood.
4. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Relaxing on your back with your legs elevated helps calm your mind and helps you to let go. Combined with deep breathing this pose helps you to slow down and lets your parasympathetic nervous system take over. Best of all, you get to lie there and let your mind drift.
5. Stretches Hips, Legs, Back
Your calf and leg muscles, hamstrings and back will get a good stretch with this pose. Your neck and hips will also feel a good stretch as you move into and out of the pose. Over time, it will make your body more flexible and elastic and it will relieve tension and pain in those areas. Practice on a regular basis to help heal chronic back pain.
Tips: A slight bend in the knee is fine if you have some trouble keeping your legs vertical. Just be sure to keep your spine aligned for maximum benefit. If you want a deeper stretch, spread your feet into a small 'V' formation. To start, begin slowly, no more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time until your body adjusts to being in this position. In time, you can build up to 15 minutes.
However, if you have a neck, hip or back injury you should avoid doing this pose. In addition, people with glaucoma or a history of cardiac or stroke issues should avoid this asana as it may increase pressure around the head and the heart. As always, be sure to consult with your doctor first if you have major health issues.

BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

When we're young, we'ld love to run and play, climb trees, play various indoor and outdoor games, never gave a thought about the benefits of exercise. But, as we grow old, we're religiously reminded that we need to exercise, or else our muscles and bones will get stiff. When one is told to exercise, one always come across so many excuses, you don't know how much I do at home, or I've pain, or what is heard most common is, I DON'T GET TIME TO EXERCISE!. Sadly, God has given us all the same 24 hours, we need to do some time management , then we can find time to do all that we want to do.

Now for the benefits of exercise-

1) Helps maintain proper posture- Quite often our aches are due to wrong posture, when we're sitting and working, or even standing to do household chores. The wrong posture can lead to spinal problems, some of which will only worsen with age. Regular and correct exercise, will not only help to keep us erect, but also strengthen our bones and muscles.

2) Strengthens our bones
- The more we walk and exercise, our bones will get stronger. But, be careful to learn the correct type of exercise which you need according to your age and other ailments if you've. So, best is to have a good physiotherapist to guide you and let you know what is best for you.

3) Better circulation- When we exercise, our circulation improves greatly, as our oxygen need increases, our heart feels better to pump if it gets enough oxygen. When we exercise, we sweat out, so we drink more water, which helps to flush out the toxins from the body. This ultimately improves our immunity and maintain better health overall.

4) Sound sleep- With better circulation, we're able to do more work. This will make us feel tired at the end of the day and help us to have sound sleep once we hit the bed.

5) Less stress- When we exercise, endorphins are released, which help to reduce stress. This helps to reduce our blood pressure, thus indirectly helps the heart too. For those who are diabetic, it helps to keep their sugar level under control by regular exercise.

6) Make us confident- Regular exercise keeps us healthy, lowers our blood pressure and sugar levels. Keeps our weight in check. All these leads to more energy, help us to concentrate better in whatever work or physical activities we undertake. Being physically fit itself boosts one's confidence, as better body, gives rise to better features, with better look, one gets more confident in facing any physical or mental challenge boldly.

I'm sure after reading this, many are going to promise that from now on, they'll do regular exercise. The simplest form of exercise which all can do is walking, walk at your own pace, while you walk, don't talk, as those who have respiratory problem get very breathless while talking and walking. Daily walking for 30 minutes will do you a world of good. It will help you to enjoy the nature, can listen to those lovely birds singing so merrily. Above all those who have digestion problem, a small advise, don't walk after eating, as blood that is needed for digestion gets diverted more to walking. So, best is to walk before eating, and not after eating.
