5 essential oils with serious sleep-boosting powers

Regardless of how busy you are and how many women's circles you squeeze in to your already jam-packed schedule, getting sufficient sleep is essential. And in terms of maximizing shut-eye time, there are a lot of choices out there: everything from infrared pajamas to bio-frequency stickers that supposedly support your body clock, and even  workouts catered to helping you catch sleep.

If you’d prefer something a little more low-key, however, you could always turn to essential oils—the ever-so-strong plant and botanical extracts known for their health-boosting benefits (from reducing anxiety to improving your mood). Just as these elixirs can lift you up, they’re also capable of helping you get a good night’s rest. And, never a bad thing: You and your bed will smell amazing.
“Essential oils are great because your body doesn’t grow dependent on them,” says an expert. “As a society, people are too used to the one-pill-and-go approach. This natural alternative has zero side effects, even when used regularly.”

While energizing oils include powerful scents like grapefruit and peppermint, the blends that are perfect for bedtime are all about reducing stress and relaxing the body—in other words, they take a more holistic approach to calming you down for sleep.

Since you aren’t ingesting them like you would with, for example, melatonin,an expert notes that it’s all about applying essential oils the just the right spots. “Either rub them on the bottom of your feet or your pulse points with a carrier blend, or drop into your diffuser,” she says. Voila—your room will transform into a dreamy, serenity-now sanctuary.

Keep reading for the 5 essential oils to turn to for some solid shut-eye.

lavender essential oil sleep
1. Lavender Chances are that when you think of natural extracts that help you sleep, the pretty purple flower is the first that comes to mind. It definitely has a reputation for being an all-natural option when you’re powering down at the end of the day, but science backs it up: Researchers have found that lavender calms the nervous system, resulting in a peaceful hitting of the hay. “Lavender’s incredible,” says an expert. “It’s important for sleep regularity.”

3.Orange

Though citrus scents are typically energizing, orange actually calms—in fact, its cheery scent is known as an anti-depressant, according to her. “That depressive feeling of despair you get when you can’t fall asleep is tremendously helped by orange essential oil,” she says. “It gives an anti-anxiety effect.”

4. Valerian root Ever wonder where Valium gets its name? Yep, that would be the perennial flowering plant valerian root. “It’s been used for centuries to combat insomnia,” she notes. “Valerian root’s not for relaxing—it’s for literally going to sleep, and it’s one of the oldest and most-studied herbs for this purpose.”

The exotic, earthy grass carries serious benefits when it comes to prepping for bed. “Vetiver’s a very grounding essential oil that has an antispasmodic effect,” she says . “When you’re having trouble sleeping, your nerves are not totally relaxed—which is why an oil like this is key.” Next step: Sliding into dream land.

Anti-anxiety drug can reverse brain deficits caused by alcohol

Researchers have identified an anti-anxietydrug that could potentially reverse the damage caused to the brain by alcohol abuse.

Alcohol abuse and addiction is characterised by extended periods of heavy alcohol use, binges and abstinence, and anxiety and depression which contribute to relapse.

The findings showed that tandospirone can help our brains reboot and reverse the damage on the regeneration of brain cells, caused by heavy alcohol consumption.

"Tandospirone drug is available only in China and Japan. It is commonly used there and shown to be highly effective in treating general anxiety and well tolerated with limited adverse effects," saida researcher.

In the study, adult mice who underwent two weeks of daily treatment with the drug tandospirone saw a reduction in anxiety-like behaviours associated with alcohol withdrawal.

Tandospirone reversed the effects of 15 weeks of binge-like alcohol consumption on neurogenesis -- the ability of the brain to grow and replace neurons (brain cells).

This was also accompanied by a significant decrease in binge-like alcohol intake.

"This is a novel discovery that tandospirone can reverse the deficit in neurogenesis caused by alcohol," said the lead author of the study.

The study also opens the way to look at if neurogenesis is associated with other substance-abuse deficits, such as in memory and learning, and whether this compound can reverse these.

"Tandospirone is not just another drug that shows promise in helping to reduce binge drinking," the researcher said.

"While it could possibly have that effect, it might be able to help reboot the brain and reverse the deficits the alcohol abuse causes - both the inhibition to the brain's ability to regenerate, and the behavioural consequences that come from what alcohol is doing to the brain, like increases in anxiety and depression," she noted.

Sleeping Pills and Anti-Anxiety Drugs Up Death Risk: Study

A latest research paper shows anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills increase the risk of death.
Researchers at the University of Warwick, England, examined 34, 727 people for 7 and half years on average from the time that they received prescriptions for either an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety)or hypnotic drug (sleeping pills).
The authors focused on contributing risk factors such as sleep disorders, anxiety disorders and other psychiatric illness in all participants. They also took into account various factors such as age, smoking and alcohol use, other prescriptions and socioeconomic status of the participants.
The researchers found that benzodiazepines were the most commonly prescribed drug class, including diazepam and temazepam. They also examined the effects of two other groups of drugs; the so-called 'Z-drugs' and all other anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs.
The findings showed that most of the patients received more than one drug during the study time frame, and 5 percent received prescriptions for drugs from all three groups. The researchers said that the results showed that anxiolytic drugs and hypnotic drugs doubled the death risk.
However, they stated that the findings were based on regular data and should be carefully interpreted and that a greater understanding of the impact of the drugs is necessary.
"The key message here is that we really do have to use these drugs more carefully. This builds on a growing body of evidence suggesting that their side effects are significant and dangerous. We have to do everything possible to minimize over reliance on anxiolytics and sleeping pills," Professor Scott Weich, said .
"That's not to say that they cannot be effective. But particularly due to their addictive potential we need to make sure that we help patients to spend as little time on them as possible and that we consider other options, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, to help them to overcome anxiety or sleep problems," he explained.
