10 Daily Things We Do That Hurt Our Lower Back

 Chronic back pain is no laughing matter – anyone who suffers from it can testify that it can be a problem that significantly disrupts quality of life. On the other hand, it’s not a rare issue by any means – it’s reported that nearly half of the working population in the U.S. (more than millions of people) has stated they suffer from these pains that frequently attack the lower back. Although many turn to pharmaceutical painkillers to alleviate the suffering, you should know there are far more effective ways to deal with it. One of them is learning which seemingly simple daily actions, that almost all of us do without thinking, cause lower back pain and how to avoid them or at least minimize them. This way, we can address the problem at its root, rather than just settling for temporary relief. So here are 10 daily actions that might be the cause of your back pain and that you should recognize in order to stop.

1. You drink sweetened soft drinks 

Drinking sweetened soft drinks is definitely not the healthiest way to nourish your body and maintain high energy – that’s clear and well-known – but an additional indirect harm caused by this habit, which you may not have known about, is that it can worsen back pain. First, because drinking these beverages can lead to the formation of kidney stones, which cause severe back pain. Second, consuming carbonated drinks contributes to gas buildup in the digestive system, which can create pressure on the spine. So, if your back suddenly hurts after drinking a glass of sweetened carbonated beverage, it’s time to start thinking about choosing water instead.

2. You read a book or use your smartphone while in bed

Whether you’re one of those who must sneak in a few more pages of the book you’re engrossed in just before going to sleep, or one of those who feel compelled to scroll through social media on their smartphone one last time before closing their eyes – you have a problem. Either way, the position in which this action is usually performed can cause stiffness in your shoulders and back, create tension in your spine and lower back, and lead to pain. Therefore, if you feel like reading a book or checking your smartphone before bed – do it while sitting on a comfortable chair or armchair, not in an awkward in-between position on the bed.

3. You brush your teeth and shave while standing incorrectly 

True, this pair of actions sounds trivial and routine, and it might surprise you to think that they could cause pain, but it’s true and very real. For starters, many people (often taller individuals) brush their teeth while bending toward the sink in a position that, if maintained for 2-3 minutes during brushing, can lead to lower back pain. Additionally, many men who shave in front of the mirror get as close as possible to it during shaving to avoid missing any spots – but in doing so, they stand for 10 minutes or more in a position where their back is bent at a 30-degree angle, putting significant pressure on the lower back area. The solution, of course, is not to avoid these two important actions but to ensure you do them with your back straight and upright, minimizing excessive bending toward the sink or leaning too close to the mirror.

4. You work all day sitting 

A sedentary lifestyle – one that essentially causes us to sit for most of our day – is more common today than ever before in history. It’s a fairly obvious and well-known factor in various back problems, resulting from prolonged sitting in positions that aren’t healthy for the body. So, what can be done? There are several ways to overcome this – experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend, for example, working at an adjustable desk that can also be set to a standing position, as they’re designed to help you not only prevent back pain but also be more productive. Additionally, it’s recommended to try the exercises suggested in the following article, which can help you correct a sitting posture that harms your back.

5. You smoke
 

Everyone already knows the major damages of smoking, but did you know that one of its additional, seemingly “side” drawbacks is that it significantly contributes to lower back pain? There’s even scientific proof: a study conducted by scientists at Johns Hopkins University found that risk factors for atherosclerosis (a history of smoking and high blood pressure) are similarly linked to lower back pain and spinal stiffness. The bottom line is that smoking doesn’t only negatively affect the heart and lungs but also the back – something that can be felt and become even more bothersome in daily life. So, if you’re a smoker and struggling to quit on your own, we recommend seeking professional treatment – your back will thank you for it too.

6. You drive long distances frequently 

Have you ever experienced lower back pain after driving for a long time? If so, know that this is definitely not a rare phenomenon at all. If your job requires you to sit behind the wheel for hours on end, even just to get to work, for example, the back pain you feel might be due to the position you sit in while driving. To reduce the pressure on your lower back while driving, you must ensure you sit upright, with your back fully aligned against the seat’s backrest. Often, drivers tend to sit in the middle of the seat, which doesn’t provide lower back support and leads to back issues. You can also purchase a cushion designed for car seats or place one of your own to provide your back with the necessary support while driving.

7. You do all the housework yourself
 

Even if you’re one of those for whom cleaning and organizing the house feels like a breeze and something you’ve been used to forever – think for a moment about all the actions you perform while doing it that could harm your back. Take laundry, for example: preparing various items for the washing machine, taking them out wet and heavy with water, rearranging them on high shelves in the closet, and so on – it all adds up to a significant amount of pressure on your lower back. Many people simply don’t think about it, but it’s worth starting to consider that even household chores that seem harmless can affect your quality of life due to the back pain they cause. So, while it’s obvious you need to keep maintaining your home, if certain actions cause you severe back pain, it’s worth starting to ask for help from other household members and involving your kids from a young age, teaching them to assist you as much as possible.

8. You push a stroller  

Mothers, fathers, grandparents – listen closely: it turns out that pushing a stroller can actually cause back pain. If you think about it for a moment, it might make sense – when you push the stroller and guide your baby in it, you usually adopt a slightly hunched walking posture toward the center, which alters the natural position of your spine, potentially putting widespread pressure on your back. So, the next time you go for a long walk with the baby and stroller, try to ask your partner or someone with you to help and take turns – to minimize as much as possible the strain that pushing the stroller forward can cause your back.

9. You wear tight dresses and high heels 

Yes, this section is obviously directed at women, and it’s absolutely essential because many do this and harm themselves and their backs. Tight, form-fitting skirts may turn heads – but they can also cause back pain; they restrict hip movement, which creates pressure on the spine. Similarly, frequently wearing high heels leads to the same outcome – these heels place your feet at an unnatural height, which in turn causes the lower back muscles to shift out of place. To enjoy a fashionable look without sacrificing your back health – opt for skirts that allow you to move your legs freely and choose heels with a height not exceeding 5 cm.

10. Your diet is unhealthy – you consume foods that promote inflammation in the lower back 

It might not seem related at first glance, but just like in many other processes in the body – diet plays a significant role in either contributing to or alleviating back pain. We’ve already mentioned earlier that drinking carbonated beverages, for instance, can lead to the development of pain, but there are several other types of foods and drinks that science has identified as potentially causing inflammation in the body, which manifests, among other things, in back pain, including: 

Red meat 

White bread 

Pasta 

Caffeine 

Alcohol 

It’s recommended to eliminate these from your diet as much as possible and instead increase your intake of anti-inflammatory foods such as: 

Fish (e.g., salmon, tuna, cod, and trout) 

Nuts and almonds in moderate amounts 

Green vegetables (e.g., kale and broccoli) 

Fruits such as grapes, oranges, bananas, and cranberries 

A good and proper diet, based on protein sources like fish and chicken, daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, and avoiding processed foods as much as possible, can reduce inflammation throughout the body and in the lower back area, contributing to the fight against chronic back pain.

Are chemicals to blame for cancer in young people? Here’s what the evidence says

Cancer is traditionally known as a disease affecting mostly older people.  

But some worrying trends show cancer rates in younger people aged under 50 are on the rise.

This week’s ABC 4 Corners suggest chemicals, including plastics, may play a role in rising rates of these early-onset cancers.

So what does the evidence say is causing this increase? And what can we do about it?

Why does cancer mostly affect older people?

Each cell in your body contains a copy of your DNA – the instructions needed to keep that cell functioning properly.

However, DNA can be damaged or “mutated” in such a way that a cell will no longer do the job it’s supposed to. 

Some mutations will allow a cell to make too many copies of itself and grow out of control. Others can protect it from dying. And others still allow it to move around and travel to other organs where it doesn’t belong.

Accumulating too many of these DNA mutations can lead to cancer.

Every time a new cell is made in our body, a copy of our DNA is made too. Sometimes, due to random chance, mistakes occur which introduce genetic mutations.

Think of it like making a photocopy of a photocopy, and so on. Each copy will be slightly different than the original.

Most DNA mutations are harmless.

But your cells are making billions of new copies of themselves each day. So the older you get, the more DNA copies you will have made during your lifetime, and the more likely you are to have dangerous mistakes in those copies.

As we get older, our bodies aren’t as good at recognising and removing cells with dangerous mutations. That’s why cancer is  much more common in older people.

What’s causing cancer in younger people?

One of the reasons increased cancer rates in younger people is so worrying is it means there are likely environmental factors involved we don't yet know about.

Environmental factors are anything outside of our bodies: things such as chemicals, viruses and bacteria, the amount we exercise, and the foods we eat.

Many of these environmental factors can increase the likelihood of DNA copying mistakes, or even directly damage our DNA, increasing our risk of cancer.

One well-known example is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, which can lead to skin cancer. Another is smoking, which can lead to lung cancer.

Fortunately, public awareness campaigns about the dangers of sun exposure, and reduced rates of people smoking cigarettes, have led to falling numbers of skin and lung cancer cases in Australians under 50 over the past 30 years.

But other types of cancer – including cancers of the liver, pancreas, prostate, breast and kidney – are increasing in young people in Australia. The trend is global, particularly among richer, western countries.

What role do chemicals play?

Researchers are working to understand the causes of these increases. Currently, chemicals are in the spotlight as an environmental factor of particular interest.

We’re exposed to more chemicals in the modern day than many of our ancestors were – things such as air pollution, food additives, plastics and many more.

Alcohol and cigarette smoke aside, most chemicals that are definitively linked to cancer are not ones most people would regularly encounter, as they’re restricted to spaces such as industry.

One of the main chemicals of concern are plastics, which are ubiquitous: almost everyone encounters them, every day.

Experts agree plastics represent an overall massive general risk to human health and the environment.

But there are so many thousands and thousands of plastics, it’s hard to point fingers at specific ones causing specific problems, including cancers.

Studies using animals can give strong evidence one way or another. But in humans who are exposed to thousands of different environmental factors every day, it’s difficult to definitively state “risk factor X contributes to cancer Y”.

So, it’s not possible to point to a single “smoking gun” in the case of the increasing early-onset cancer rates.

Let’s use colorectal cancer (also called bowel cancer) as an example to illustrate the issue.

Why are young people getting bowel cancer?

In older people, bowel cancer rates are actually falling. This is thought to be in part due to improved  testing and screening helping to catch and destroy dangerous cells before they actually become cancer.

But early-onset bowel cancer rates are rising.

Some people speculate this may be due to increased exposure to plastics, as the digestive system is exposed to these through the food we eat. This includes things such as nano-or micro-plastics, or chemicals leaching out of the plastics into foods, such as PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances).

But there are other potential culprits, such as diet and lifestyle, with obesity and alcohol intake correlating with increased cancer rates. 

Bacteria may also play a role: the types of bacteria found in your microbiome are thought to contribute to bowel cancer risk. Even exposure to certain bacterial toxins has been linked to bowel cancer risk.

How can you reduce your risk of cancer?

While there is no definitive evidence linking chemicals to increased cancer risk in young people, this is an area of intense ongoing research. Reducing your use of and exposure to plastics and chemicals where possible is still probably a healthy thing to do.

On top of that, you can reduce your overall cancer risk through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

Can Broccoli Sprouts Help Lower Blood Sugar?

A recent study published in Nature Microbiology suggests that a chemical compound found in broccoli sprouts could help individuals with prediabetes manage their blood sugar levels more effectively. This finding adds to a growing body of research exploring natural interventions for blood sugar management before full-blown diabetes develops. 

Understanding Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a health condition marked by blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It affects approximately 5-10% of adults worldwide, though many remain unaware of their condition.

Risk factors include having family members with type 2 diabetes, following an unhealthy diet, limited physical activity, and having a higher body mass index (BMI). Early intervention is important as prediabetes can often be reversed through lifestyle modifications. 
 
The Potential of Sulforaphane
 
Broccoli Sprouts 
Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden conducted a study involving 89 participants with elevated fasting blood sugar—a key indicator of prediabetes. All participants were between 35 and 75 years old and were either overweight or obese. 
 
The 12-week trial randomly assigned participants to receive either sulforaphane (a compound abundant in broccoli sprouts) or a placebo. Neither the researchers nor the participants knew who received which treatment, making it a double-blind study. By the end, 74 participants had completed all phases of the research. 
 
Results showed that individuals who took sulforaphane experienced greater reductions in fasting blood sugar compared to those who received the placebo. On average, the sulforaphane group showed blood sugar levels that were 0.2 millimoles per liter lower than the placebo group.

Who Benefits Most? 
Interestingly, the study revealed that certain individuals responded more favorably to the sulforaphane treatment. The most substantial improvements occurred in people with: 
 
- Early signs of mild age-related diabetes 
- Lower BMI (within the study's context) 
- Low insulin resistance 
- Minimal fatty liver disease 
- Lower insulin secretion 
 
In this specific subgroup, the difference increased to 0.4 millimoles per liter compared to those on placebo.


The Gut Microbiome  
Connection The research team also investigated how gut bacteria might influence sulforaphane's effectiveness. They discovered that certain bacteria appear to interact with sulforaphane, potentially making it more potent at lowering blood sugar.
 
The most dramatic results—a reduction of 0.7 millimoles per liter—were seen in participants who both belonged to the responsive subgroup mentioned above and also had specific gut bacteria present. 
 
Senior researcher Anders Rosengren, PhD, explained that sulforaphane works by targeting increased glucose production in the liver, which is a common issue in early diabetes. By reducing this excess production, fasting blood glucose levels can be maintained at healthier levels.

Can Sulforaphane Replace Lifestyle Changes?
While these findings are promising, obtaining therapeutic amounts of sulforaphane through diet alone would be challenging. According to Rosengren, one would need to consume several kilograms of broccoli daily to reach the doses used in the study. 
 
Instead, concentrated broccoli sprout extracts might offer a more practical solution. However, he cautions that sulforaphane content varies widely among commercially available products, so consumers should be selective when choosing supplements. 
 
Expert dietitians have noted that sulforaphane is already well-known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cancer-fighting properties. They say that while the current research shows potential, the most benefit appeared in people who already had low insulin resistance and healthy gut microbes. 
 
Prediabetes is often preventable and reversible, making lifestyle interventions particularly important. An imbalanced gut microbiome can contribute to elevated blood sugar and insulin resistance—suggesting that addressing gut health should be a priority. 
 
The study helped establish a connection between gut microbiome health and effective blood glucose control. Those with healthier gut bacteria appeared more likely to benefit from the broccoli sprout extract. 

Recommendations for Managing Prediabetes
Nutrition experts often talk about the importance of maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through diet: - Reduce consumption of ultra-processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and high saturated fat foods 
 
- Eat more prebiotic fiber and foods in their natural forms 
 
- Include fermented foods like yogurt, kombucha, kimchi, and pickled vegetables 
 
- Consume a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to provide both soluble and insoluble fiber


Experts recommend focusing on these dietary approaches before considering sulforaphane supplementation. They suggest that improving overall gut health might make any interventions—whether medication or supplements—more effective for blood sugar control. 
 
Looking Ahead 
This research opens possibilities for more targeted approaches to prediabetes management. As Rosengren noted, the findings point toward potential "precision treatment" options that could be tailored to those most likely to benefit. 
 
While lifestyle modifications remain the cornerstone of prediabetes management, this study adds to our understanding of how specific plant compounds might work in conjunction with these efforts—especially for individuals with certain metabolic and microbiome profiles.

As research continues, the relationship between plant compounds, gut bacteria, and metabolic health may lead to more personalized approaches for preventing diabetes progression in at-risk individuals.
