13-Year Old Finds a Way to Treat Pancreatic Cancer

When it comes to pancreatic cancer, survival rates are extremely low. Statistics show that around 9% of people with pancreatic cancer survive for five years, and only around 1% survive for 10 years. And these stats haven't improved significantly in the past 40 years either. However, one 13-year-old, 8th grader  from Portland, Oregon, Rishab Jain is determined to change these statistics with his AI-based tool, PCDLS Net, which improves pancreas tracking during radiotherapy. Jain also won the 2018 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, before he started high school. 

But how did he get started? "It all started in the summer of 2017 when I went to visit my brother in Boston, and there I learned about some research that was happening, and the surprisingly low statistics about pancreatic cancer, like its survival rate." In light of this, he created an artificial intelligence-based tool called PCDLS Net to improve pancreas tracking during a treatment called radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer. 
Currently, pancreatic cancer is detected in quite a late stage, so by then, doctors use radiotherapy to help treat it, but most of the time, it is not effective enough. This inspired Jain to do some research on this. "Because I am a big programmer, and I like artificial intelligence, so I wondered if I could combine my knowledge in the two areas to help solve the problem, and I created an artificial intelligence-based tool called PCDLS Net to improve pancreas tracking during a treatment called radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer."
Jain contacted over 253 doctors and got 30 replies from leading experts from institutions at cancer centers and around the world. 


What makes surgery for the pancreas even more complicated is that it is very hard for the human eye to detect. This poses a big problem to radiologists and oncologists who have to find the pancreas and apply the radiation treatment. "other organs such as the stomach and liver that may cover the area, and also, it's right below the lungs causing it to move during some of the treatments. It's also very hard to reach in. It's right in the center of the abdomen next to the spinal cord... It's sometimes detailed as a mushy or angry organ because of its position in the body," he says. 


This is where Jain's invention comes into play. "My tool can be run to find where exactly the pancreas is in one of these CT or MRI slices and output this result instantaneously." He adds "currently, doctors have to apply sometimes a seven-millimeter overlay around the pancreas of radiation, and this can affect millions of healthy cells, so my tool is able to reduce that area to around four millimeters, so that saves millions of healthy cells and can improve patient quality of care." 
Jain says that he has detailed a five-year plan about how he want to globally commercialize his tool, PCDLS Net, improving pancreatic cancer survival rates. "I envision partnering with a hospital as well as 3M to work and create my tool as an add-on, and for this, I'll need to conduct clinical testing, so I want to gain FDA and IRB approval. So I want to continue pursuing medicine and engineering as I grow up, so for my undergraduate degree, I'm thinking about becoming a biomedical engineer," he concludes.

    I've got to see first-hand some of my relatives who are doctors and how they can perform surgery or make other treatments that improve the quality of care and solve problems for people in need, so I'm thinking about becoming a surgeon and continuing medical research as I grow up.

Tracking heart rate can help detect hearing loss early

Assessing human hearing ability by tracking the heart rate can lead to early detection of hearing loss that can help in the development of communication and language skills, say researchers. The team, measured heart rate with a brain imaging method called functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The technique records the brain's response to sounds and cardiac information such as heart rate.

The researchers were able to confirm that sound levels "directly affect heart rate", it was reported on Saturday. 

Early detection of hearing loss is vital for babies born with a hearing impairment. Identifying and treating hearing loss early is "imperative for good language development, with life-long consequences for social, educational and employment opportunities, and quality of life," according to the study, published in the journal. 

The team played a range of sounds with different volumes and monitored the participant's cardiac response, with the results showing that heart rate was "directly affected by sound levels". When lower level sounds were played, a significantly lowered heart rate was recorded, for higher level sounds, an increased heart rate occurred.

The objective methods of measuring hearing are crucial for babies and other people who are unable to communicate what they hear, said lead author. The effect of sounds on heart rate is a vital finding that contributes toward the development of a novel objective hearing assessment system which combines heart rate information with brain responses, to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of hearing assessment in infants, the researchers noted.

The most effective weight loss strategy is way easier than people think

Tracking your food is the best predictor of success for weight loss, and it's not as awful as it seems. Here's how to do it.

When you think of losing weight, you may envision the sadness of hours on the treadmill and the depressing deprivation of the foods you love. Which, yes, to a certain extinct may be required. But did you know that research shows the single best predictor of success in losing weight is monitoring and recording calorie and fat intake throughout the day?

Yet even though it is the most effective tool, dietary self-monitoring is widely viewed as "so unpleasant and time-consuming, many would-be weight-losers can't muster the will power to do it," according to researchers.

But a new study by the team finds that the reality of dietary self-monitoring may be far less odious than the idea of it.

"People hate it; they think it's onerous and awful, but the question we had was: How much time does dietary self-monitoring really take?" said  the lead author of the study. "The answer is, not very much."

The study is the first to look at how long it takes to keep a detailed journal for those who successfully lose weight.

The team analyzed the dietary self-monitoring habits of 142 participants for 24 weeks. Each were asked to record online the calories and fat for everything consumed, as well as the portion sizes and the preparation methods, for six months.

They found that the most successful dieters of the cohort – those who lost 10 percent of their body weight – spent an average of 23.2 minutes per day on the task in the first month of the program. But by the end of the study, they had got the time down to 14.6 minutes. The researchers also found that the frequency of journal additions played a key role in the success.

"Those who self-monitored three or more time per day, and were consistent day after day, were the most successful," Harvey said. "It seems to be the act of self-monitoring itself that makes the difference – not the time spent or the details included."

So how awful, or not, is it to record everything you've eaten over the course of a day? I can tell you!
I am my own favorite guinea pig when it comes to nutrition and I love trying approaches to eating. In the summer I was at a dinner party where every guest, independently, was on some type of low-carb diet and raved about how great they felt. I have always been wary of giving up fruit and whole grains, but out of curiosity, I decided to try it for a month – and decided that I would log all my nutrients along the way.

And just like the study found, it was so much easier than  ever expected, by using some online app – the researchers also mention Lose It !, CalorieKing – and was really surprised at how simple it was. The program has most foods entered in a comprehensive database and one just needs to find the food and enter the portion – the program does all the rest of the work and keeps a running tab of nutrients. It keeps a list of frequently consumed things, which makes regular items very quick to add. Recipes I make on a regular basis I entered whole in the recipe section and then could just enter a portion size per meal. All told, it took about 5 to 10 minutes a day. It definitely made me more accountable to myself for what I was eating. At the end of the day, nobody wants to have to face the fact that they ate the whole batch of cookies.

Anyway, the  aythor hopes the study results will encourage more people to try dietary self-monitoring as a weight-loss strategy. And I agree; it's important for a number of reasons. With nearly 40 percent of American adults found to be obese in 2015-16, up from 34 percent in 2007-08, we've got a problem on our hands. Obesity is linked to a host of chronic diseases, for which treatment is expensive and uses up a lot of natural resources. Not to mention, obviously, that it is painful and potentially deadly for those who suffer.

For the record, my low-carb experiment was interesting. I actually lost weight without really trying and felt fantastic. But looking at the data I collected over the month, I was horrified by the lack of fiber I was getting. Now I'm back to my plant-based Mediterranean-style diet. But you know what? I still track my food on a semi-regular basis because it's really interesting ... and so easy.

As the author says, "It's highly effective, and it's not as hard as people think."
