Can eating tomatoes cause kidney stones? The truth revealed

The tangy red tomatoes are an essential part of every Indian cuisine. Whether you put chunks of it in your curry or have tomato ketchup with your samosas, its distinct taste adds flavour to whatever dish you are having.

Not only for its flavours, but tomatoes are also known for its nutrient content. Loaded with the benefits of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, fiber and protein, this red citric fruit has numerous proven health benefits. It is good for the eyesight, reduces diabetes complications, protects against sun damage and reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

Even then there is a common belief that tomatoes can lead to kidney stones. Is it really possible that a fruit that has some amazing health benefits can lead to another disease? Let's dwell deeper into this topic and find out what the truth is.

Why tomatoes are linked with kidney stones?
There are several types of kidney stones and the most common one is calcium stones. These stones are formed due to the deposition of a large amount of calcium oxalate in our kidneys. Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance that is found in different kinds of vegetables and fruits. Moreover, even our liver produces certain amount of calcium daily. Our bones and muscles do absorb calcium from the blood, but when the amount of this nutrient exceeds in the blood, it is passed on to the kidney to be flushed out with urine. Some times the kidneys are not able to remove excess calcium from the body, which gradually starts to accumulate and takes a shape of a stone.

Tomatoes contain high amounts of oxalate and hence is linked with the formation of kidney stones.

The truth
If you love adding tomatoes in your food then you must not stop doing to because of this myth. Tomatoes do contain oxalate, but the amount of it is quite low and cannot lead to the formation of a kidney stone. 100 grams of tomatoes contain only 5 grams of oxalate. If tomatoes were so harmful then people diagnosed with kidney stones would have been advised to completely shun its consumption. If you are healthy and have no kidney issue then it is fine to have tomatoes as much as you like. In case you are dealing with some kidney related problem then limit your oxalate intake. Spinach, beans, beetroot also contain a high amount of oxalate. Cook these vegetables properly before eating.

Things that can prevent kidney stones
Shunning some particular vegetables or fruit is not an assurance that you will never have kidney stones. Rather here are some things that you can do to reduce the risk.
  • Drink at least 2 litres of water daily. This will help your kidney flush out toxins from the body.
  • Reduce your sodium intake.
  • Add plant protein to your diet.
  • Avoid taking any kind of supplements without consulting your doctor.

Lean Meat Animal meat is one of the best sources of protein and vitamin B-12, and most dietitians will advise their patients to stick to lean meat and avoid the fattier cuts. The problem is that consuming too much animal protein causes the body to produce a hormone called IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1). This hormone can accumulate in the body and lead to accelerated aging and cancer. If you need to get proteins, try balancing your diet between lean meat and legumes.

  Oranges and Tomatoes
Both fruits are jam-packed full of vitamin C and are often recommended for their health benefits. While they are indeed good for your health, overeating them can become a serious problem. Tomatoes and oranges are highly acidic, and increased consumption of them can lead to acid reflux. On its own, reflux is relatively harmless, but repeated bouts will damage your esophagus and cause Barrett’s Esophagus, which is a state where the esophagus is covered in precancerous abrasions.

Spinach
This leafy green is rich in vitamins, minerals, iron, protein, and fiber, making it an amazing addition to your diet. Spinach is also a good source of lutein, which helps prevent macular degeneration. “So what’s the problem?” you may be asking. The answer is that spinach also contains high levels of oxalate, which triggers the formation of kidney stones. If you’ve got a history of kidney stones, you’ll want to avoid spinach.

 Soy
The go-to meat substitute for many vegetarians, soy is rich in proteins and helps lower cholesterol levels, and even reduces blood pressure. However, soy also has a “dark side” – it hinders iron absorption in the body, which can quickly lead to anemia. Furthermore, soy contains phytoestrogen, which mimics the female hormone estrogen. Phytoestrogen can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, which can lead to uterine cancer. Furthermore, in men it can lead to the development of feminine features if consumed in large quantities.

Canned Tuna
Canned tuna is often recommended by dieticians and trainers as a good source of protein that's also low in calories. But problems arise from the high mercury levels in canned tuna. Mercury poisoning causes vision problems, speech and hearing problems, impaired coordination, and damage to muscle tissues. In severe cases it can be fatal, so don’t eat more than five cans a week.

 Brazil Nuts
In moderation, Brazil nuts are small, delicious bombs of health; rich in fiber, protein, and fatty acids. Add to that their ability to lower cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure and you’ll think they make a great snack. But problems arise from the high levels of selenium in these nuts. Selenium is an essential nutrient, but in large doses it becomes toxic. Selenium toxicity leads to loss of hair, brittle nails, neurological damage, and eventually death. To make sure you are not overdoing it, avoid eating more than ten a day.
