    Recent headlines about hantavirus have raised concerns about whether people should be worried about another infectious disease threat. While hearing about a rare, unfamiliar virus can sound alarming, infectious disease experts say hantavirus infections remain uncommon, and for most people, the overall risk is still very low.

    “Hantavirus is not a typical pathogen,” says CEO and co-founder of Wellness Equity Alliance. “Unlike norovirus or the respiratory bugs that move easily between people, hantaviruses are spread mostly through contact with the urine, droppings or saliva of infected rodents.”

    However, understanding how hantavirus spreads and how to reduce your exposure to rodents and their droppings can help you stay safe. Here’s what experts want you to know.

    What Is Hantavirus?

    Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses primarily carried by rodents. In the U.S., the virus most commonly associated with human illness is spread by deer mice.

    Human infections are rare but can be serious. Hantavirus can cause a severe respiratory illness known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Early symptoms often resemble the flu, which can make the illness difficult to recognize at first.

    Symptoms may include:

    • Fever
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle aches
    • Headaches
    • Chills
    • Nausea or vomiting.

    As the illness progresses, some people may develop coughing and shortness of breath as fluid builds up in the lungs.1 Symptoms can worsen quickly, so medical attention is essential if someone develops severe respiratory symptoms after potential rodent exposure.

    How Does Hantavirus Spread?

    Hantavirus does not spread as easily as common respiratory viruses like the flu or COVID-19. Infections usually occur through contact with infected rodents or the particles they leave behind.

    People are most often exposed when virus particles from rodent urine, saliva or droppings become airborne and are inhaled. This can happen when cleaning enclosed spaces like garages, sheds, cabins, crawl spaces or basements where rodents have been present.

    “In general, hantavirus is difficult to catch and requires fairly specific exposure to infected rodents or their droppings,” Evans explains. “The Andes virus, which is found in Chile and Argentina, is the only hantavirus documented to transmit from person to person, and requires prolonged or close physical contact.”

    However, certain factors may increase your exposure risk, such as:

    • Living in or cleaning rodent-infested spaces
    • Disturbing rodent nests or droppings
    • Spending time in rural cabins, sheds or poorly ventilated buildings
    • Storing food improperly, which can attract rodents.

    What Can You Do to Lower Your Risk?

    The best way to reduce your risk of hantavirus is to minimize contact with rodents and prevent them from entering your home in the first place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends sealing holes or gaps where mice can enter, storing food in sealed containers and keeping kitchens and food preparation areas clean.

    If you need to clean an area with rodent droppings, avoid sweeping or vacuuming dry waste, which can send virus particles into the air. Instead:

    • Open windows and ventilate the area first.
    • Wear gloves.
    • Spray droppings with disinfectant or a bleach solution.
    • Wipe up the material with paper towels.
    • Dispose of waste carefully and wash hands thoroughly afterward.7

    Should You Be Worried?

    For most people, hantavirus is a very low-risk infection. Cases are rare and the virus does not spread easily between people in the U.S. “The risk to the general American public remains low, and that is the CDC’s current assessment as well,” says Evans.

    The good news is that taking some simple prevention measures can help significantly lower your risk, such as keeping rodents out of your home, properly cleaning contaminated spaces and avoiding direct exposure to rodent droppings.

    Coronavirus vaccine: Strangest side-effects discovered so far

    The side-effects of the COVID-19 vaccine you should know about

    By now, we do know about a possible list of side-effects of the COVID-19 vaccine.

    Fever, chills, muscle aches, pain at the injection site and experiencing a sort of malaise can be common after-effects of getting vaccinated- and the ones you should be prepared for.

    However, with more and more people receiving experimental shots, the list of symptoms continues to rise. For example, attention is now being drawn towards some ‘strange’, unusual side-effects which can be recorded with the vaccine.

    What exactly causes these symptoms after a vaccine jab is unknown, nonetheless, it’s important to be aware at this point of the newer, less common symptoms which can happen, especially if you are sensitive or at the risk of an allergic reaction to the vaccine. We discuss some of them here:

    Lip swelling

    In an unsual turn of events, some people who have been inoculated with the Moderna jab have gone on to develop a sort of lip swelling and blisters.

    While there are some theories that suggested that people who have lip fillers may develop an allergic response (swelling), this is indeed a rare development that has been categorized as a rare, unusual reaction. People with the reaction have gone on to say it can feel like a painful blister, uncomfortable and is also accompanied by mouth dryness.

    While lip swelling in itself, is a harmless reaction, it can also be a form of delayed reaction to the inoculation.

    COVID arm

    Another new side-effect that has been discovered of late is 'COVID arm'- a side-effect that could leave beneficiaries with a strange, red lesion at the site of injection and experience prolonged stiffness and pain. Medically, it can be referred to as delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity, which essentially means a delayed reaction on the skin.

    Some people who have experienced the COVID arm also reported the lesion being painful to touch, and also experience itching. What also makes this side-effect a tad bit different than the others is that it can come up days later, sometimes 7-9 days after getting the shot, which makes it different from all other side-effects. The good news? It's brief, and possibly a harmless reaction and shouldn't be a reason to get the second shot.

    Enlarged lymph nodes

    In what possibly can be termed as the strangest reaction of the COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine jab can cause a certain side-effect that could be mistaken for breast cancer-enlarged lymph nodes. Doctors are now seeing a number of immunized people show up with such a reaction.

    Though anecdotal, experts say that the reaction can occur on the same arm where you get the jab.

    Even though the side-effect is not directly harmful (or be cancerous), experts feel that the side-effects can drive anxiety for patients, since it resembles a classic cancer symptom and hence, more awareness needs to be put in place right now. 

    Blood clots

    The Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine has been temporarily suspended for use in certain countries, after some healthcare workers developed scary blood clots and decreased platelet count.

    While it remains unknown whether the symptom was caused by the vaccine directly, doctors now believe this to be a rare occurence to be cautious about- some people can have a preexisting condition (a possible autoimmune reaction) which can make the body destroy platelets and cause clotting.

    In some cases, blood clotting could also cause painful blisters, rashes and bruises.

    Blurred vision

    Another strange side-effect is the one which has impaired some people's vision right now.

    According to some case studies, getting inoculated could leave some people with hazy or blurred vision for a couple of days. In the US, a healthcare worker also developed eye puffing after getting a shot.

    Although unusual and slightly worrisome, experts believe that vision problem could also be commonly experienced with other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine and hence, shouldn't be a big reason to doubt the effectiveness or safety of the COVID vaccines right now.

    Avoid preventive pain relievers before getting a COVID vaccine

    While these side effects are generally a minor nuisance to most people, some attempt to prevent them by taking common over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (e.g., Motrin, Advil) beforehand. However, experts said these medications might not just dull the pain, but they may dull the vaccine from fully working.

    “We do not recommend premedication with ibuprofen or Tylenol before COVID-19 vaccines due to the lack of data on how it impacts the vaccine-induced antibody responses,” Dr. Simone Wildes, an infectious disease specialist at South Shore Medical Center and a member of Massachusetts’ COVID-19 Vaccine Advisory Group, told ABC News.

    The side effects from the vaccines are caused by activation of the immune system, meaning that the immune system is working and starting to build immunity to COVID-19 -- this is what we want. These pain relievers may prevent parts of the immune system from working and slow down the immune response. There is a theory that taking these medications before immunization may reduce their effectiveness.

    A study from Duke University found that children who took pain relievers before getting their childhood vaccines had fewer antibodies than those who did not take the medications, which could mean less protection. However, there were still protective antibody levels, despite the blunting.

    “You always would like an optimal response to your vaccine,” Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist and professor of preventative medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told ABC News. “We are recommending that unless people have a substantial reaction to the first dose that they hold their [pain killers]."

    "The vast majority of people have a bit of a sore arm," said Schaffner, "but otherwise, they feel pretty well.”

    While experts recommend against taking over-the-counter pain relievers before getting the vaccine, they say you should continue taking them if you are already doing so for another medical condition. Schaffner warned that stopping these medications could cause unintended problems and be more harmful than beneficial.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that after getting your shot, you should monitor for the side effects. As pain relievers and fever reducers are not intended for use before symptoms appear, talk to your doctor before vaccination to decide if you should take any over-the-counter pain relievers after receiving the shot.

    Other, more natural ways to reduce pain and discomfort include: applying a clean, cool, wet washcloth over the injection site and moving or exercising your arm. And for a fever, drink plenty of fluids and dress lightly.

    “If fever, chills, headaches develop after injection,” use pain relievers to help with your symptoms, but not before they develop and report any significant side effects to a medical professional, Wildes said.
