These 6 Popular Condiments Are Awful for Your Health

Like most people I know, I pretty much grew up on French fries with my favorite dipping sauces – god knows how many bottles of the stuff I’ve been through. Although I always knew it was a bit unhealthy, I was still taken aback when I discovered how dangerous most store condiments are for our health. I just had to share this important information with you, because I know how popular these risky items still are. Here are 6 of the worst condiments out there, with plenty of suggestions for healthier alternatives.

1. Tomato ketchup
condiments, health, sugar

Ketchup is the undisputed champion of condiments, but is it any good for you? The sad answer is: ‘no’. Most of us don’t dole out a single tablespoon of ketchup onto our chips or fries - it’s much more like two (or more!). Unfortunately, an amount like this contains 8g of sugar. And it’s not proper table sugar, but the cheaper and less healthy fructose corn syrup that’s generally used.

For a healthier alternative why not try organic syrup made with real sugar? Furthermore, it would be even better to forget all about ketchup. Have you ever considered buying sun-dried tomatoes? They make a wonderful, healthy and refreshing alternative.

2. Barbecue sauce
condiments, health, sugar
Typical store-bought barbecue sauce probably contains even more harmful fructose corn syrup than ketchup, at around 12 g per serving. Yet the situation here is even worse because of the potentially carcinogenic artificial coloring frequently used to give the sauce a lovely mahogany hue.

Instead, try your hand at some home-made sauces, or go for a barbecue sauce which comes from a ‘small-batch producer’ that’s probably free of additives.

3. ‘Light’ salad dressing
condiments, health, sugar
The problem with opting for lighter dressings in order to reduce your fat intake is that these ‘light’ options make up for a lack of fat with an increase in sugar. This may make them taste more palatable, but what about your health? You always need to be aware of how much sugar you are consuming, but we usually don’t realize when it comes to items like this.

The truth is that you needn’t worry about proper Mediterranean-style olive oil and vinegar. The fat is actually needed for your body to absorb the essential vitamins waiting for you in your salad.

4. Store-bought Mayonnaise

condiments, health, sugar
A 2 tablespoon serving of conventional mayonnaise contains a whopping 200 calories. But this is not the reason why you should skip the condiment. Most of the mayo on the market uses soybean oil derived from GM soybeans that may potentially increase the risks of suffering from diabetes or becoming obese.

Instead, why not purchase, or make, mayonnaise made with canola or avocado oil? Alternatively, I suggest you start using hummus or mashed avocado.

5. Honey mustard
condiments, health, sugar
Unfortunately, most of the honey mustard on the market today is nothing of the kind. Loaded with sugary fructose corn syrup, there is often not much in the way of honey contained here. So, although it’s low in fat, the sugar levels make this moreish sauce far too dangerous for you to be buying.

The best thing to do instead would be to make your own. It’s really very easy. Just mix some honey with mustard and there you have it!

6. Tartar sauce
condiments, health, sugar
Tartar sauce is generally eaten with greasy, fried seafood, which you need to be wary of anyway. Plus, this sauce suffers from the same soybean-oil related health problems of mayonnaise, since mayonnaise is the main ingredient of tartar.

To make your own tartar simple mix some crushed pickles with your canola/avocado oil-based mayonnaise.

8 Foods You Are Better Off Without And Need To Remove From Your Diet

Food is fuel for our bodies. Our food provides our bodies with the energy and nutrients it needs to function properly. However, we often eat food for satiation and not for its benefits on our body. This hunger for satisfaction has exposed us to all kinds of unhealthy foods.

Many foods that we consume regularly have little to no nutritional benefits and may even worsen our health. In this article, we discuss a list of foods you should cut out of your diet immediately.

8 foods you need to remove from your diet right away:

1. Dried fruit

Dried fruits are often consumed with nuts and are considered to be under the same food group. However, while nuts are nutritious and a great addition to our diet, dried fruits are extremely unhealthy. These concentrated foods lack nutrients and are abundant in sugar.

2. Bought baked foods

Baked foods may seem unhealthy or healthy based on what you are consuming. However, store-bought baked foods go through long processes to make them shelf-friendly. To increase their shelf-life, they are very high in corn syrup, sugar, trans fats, and other preservatives that are very bad for our bodies.

3. Fresh fruit juices

This may be shocking to many. Although fresh fruit juices are a much better alternative to processed and fruit-flavoured ‘fruit' juices, they still lack nutrition. When we prepare juices out of fruits, we are throwing away a lot of healthy fibre. This fibre aids the proper functioning of our digestive system.

4. White bread

This is no new news but you need to remove white bread from your diet immediately. You may be aware of it being unhealthy but why is white bread the worst kind of bread? White bread is prepared from refined flour. Its high Glycemic Index (GI) also spikes our blood sugar levels.

5. Diet sodas

Sodas and all kinds of carbonated drinks are known for being high in sugar and extremely bad for our bodies. Diet sodas have emerged as a solution to this. However, diet sodas are not any healthier. They might be lower in calories but they cause the same kind of harm. Sodas also increase calcium loss and affect our bone health. They affect our brain health and lower metabolism.

6. Ketchup

Ketchup refers to a tomato-based sauce. Ketchup is a widely consumed condiment but is extremely unhealthy. It is high in sugar, sodium, and various preservatives that worsen our health. Ketchup may cause obesity, diabetes, or other diseases.

7. Cereals

Cereals in cold milk are one of the most common and popular breakfast foods. However, they are extremely unhealthy. These cereals are high in sugar and preservatives. According to studies, your breakfast must be protein-rich which cereals don't provide.

8. Flavoured yogurts

Yogurts are one of the most popular healthy snack foods. That may be true unless your yogurt is processed and flavoured. Flavouring a yogurt means adding sugar to it. These sugars, flavouring and preservatives are unhealthy and lower yogurt's nutritional value.

In conclusion, many unhealthy foods may go unnoticed. It is important to do proper research and avoid consuming these unhealthy foods. These foods as discussed, provide no nutrition and may even negatively affect our health.

What Foods Can We Eat Past Their Expiration? Find Out Now

Pantry Staples
Let me preface this by stating that the information I am about to throw down pertains to unopened foods. For example, we all know that if you have children and you open a box of cereal, there is a slim to none chance they will seal the bag back properly, let alone shut the box. Just saying. That being said, if you have a box of cereal that is unopened, you can safely consume this for six to eight months past the expiration date on the box. Truth be told, from a “safety” standpoint, an opened box of cereal will probably still be edible for longer, but it may taste pretty stale.

Along these lines, dry pasta will be safe to consume roughly one to two years past its expiration date. Cooked pasta doesn’t fare as well; in fact, that should be tossed three to five days after cooking. But even if you won’t be eating it right away, when you see a deal on pasta, go ahead and snag a few boxes.

Refrigerator Staples
I always found it odd that folks ran out to buy extra milk and bread when fear of any inclement weather was forecast. These are two foods that always come printed with an expiration date that’s relatively soon after purchase. However, both are usually good anywhere from seven to ten days past their expiration, provided they are stored properly—even after they’ve been opened.

Bread is pretty obvious as it will begin to grow mold. Milk isn’t as obvious until you pop the cap off. You will know instantly by the smell if it is safe to consume. (You know what I am talking about.)
Believe it or not, eggs can be consumed roughly three to four weeks past their expiration date. If you are able to get fresh eggs that have not been washed and packaged, you can keep fresh eggs at room temperature for several months. (Once washed, however, they should be immediately stored in the fridge.)

Frozen Meats and Seafood
Please notice I said frozen and not raw. Raw meat and seafood should generally be used before the expiration date, and you can usually tell just by looking at it or feeling it when it’s passed its prime. Once frozen, ground beef can last three or four months past the expiration date, seafood can last six to nine months past the expiration date, and chicken and turkey can go up to a year.

Frozen Fruits and Veggies
Provided they aren’t freezer burned, frozen fruits and vegetables can last upwards of one to two years. And some would argue that they can be healthier than fresh options depending on the variety and how you are using them.

Canned Foods and Condiments
One would assume canned goods are a relatively safe bet. Not exactly. These can typically only be used one to two years past their expiration; however, canned goods that are acidic (e.g., tomatoes), I personally would be a little leery of.

The same goes for three of the condiments we always have on hand in my house: ketchup, mustard, and peanut butter. As long as they aren’t opened yet, they can last upwards of a year beyond the expiration date.

Are There Forever Foods?
Are there any foods you can keep around forever? You would be surprised at what research has uncovered.

I am just going to get this one out of the way because I know you are all wondering. Hard Alcohol. This stuff lasts forever. (Although I am not sure how long that bottle of water in my parent’s liquor cabinet lasted, or the exact moment when they discovered I had replaced their vodka one summer before graduation.)

Rice. If stored properly, rice can last forever. It can also fix your waterlogged electronics, but that’s for another article.

Sugar and salt can last almost indefinitely. Sugar cannot support microbial growth, and salt, well, salt is salt. So, this makes it a mineral, which cannot spoil. Along the lines of sugar, honey is basically all sugar and contains almost no water. If you ever notice your honey begin to crystalize, simply reheat it in a warm water bath (not in the microwave!), and it will go right back to liquid form. Same holds true for real maple syrup.

One of my favorite ingredients/condiments is ACV (apple cider vinegar). Both apple cider vinegar and white vinegar will hold their own for decades. Vinegar contains a low pH and is technically a preserved food.

Dried beans. As long as you store them in a cool, dry location and keep them from getting in contact with water or moisture, dried beans can go the distance.

I would venture to say if you stockpile these foods, you will survive a zombie apocalypse.

If you are curious about a specific food that isn’t mentioned, foodsafety.gov has a super cool app you can download here: FoodSaver App
