Probiotics won’t help kids with ‘stomach flu

Despite a growing trend of giving kids probiotics to treat “stomach flu”, a new study shows that these dietary supplements may not actually help ease symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. The study, involving nearly 1,000 children aged 3 months to 4 years, provides evidence against the popular and costly use of probiotics – live microorganisms believed to restore the balance of intestinal bacteria and boost the immune system.
“Probiotics had no effect on the children. Parents are better off saving their money and using it to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables for their children,” said study co-author. The findings, showed that a commonly used probiotic is not effective in improving symptoms in young patients with gastroenteritis, popularly known as “stomach flu”.

The researchers evaluated a common probiotic known as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, or LGG, which is sold over the counter as Culturelle. Certain versions of the probiotic are intended for babies and children. There are no treatments for pediatric acute gastroenteritis other than giving children fluids to prevent dehydration and, sometimes, medication to relieve nausea. The lack of options has prompted some physicians and parents to give ill children probiotics, the researchers said.

On the other hand, another latest study on the use of probiotics claimed that feeding them to infants and children daily may significantly stave off the need for antibiotic treatment. This finding would probably help address the global rise in drug-resistant infections among children, said researchers. The study found that infants and children were 29 percent less likely to have been prescribed antibiotics if they received probiotics as a daily health supplement.

Eating muesli in breakfast may help combat arthritis

The findings showed that a healthy diet rich in fibre is capable of changing intestinal bacteria in such a way that more short-chained fatty acids, in particular propionate, are formed.

Short-chained fatty acids are important for the body as they provide energy, stimulate intestinal movement and have an anti-inflammatory effect. “We were able to show that a bacteria-friendly diet has an anti-inflammatory effect, as well as a positive effect on bone density,” said the lead author.

“We are not able to give any specific recommendations for a bacteria-friendly diet at the moment, but eating muesli every morning as well as enough fruit and vegetables throughout the day helps to maintain a rich variety of bacterial species,” the author added.

In the study, focussed on the short-chain fatty acids propionate and butyrate, which are formed during the fermentation processes caused by intestinal bacteria. These fatty acids can be found, for example, in the joint fluid and it is assumed that they have an important effect on the functionality of joints.

The researchers also proved that a higher concentration of short-chained fatty acids, for example in bone marrow, where propionate caused a reduction in the number of bone-degrading cells, slowing bone degradation down considerably.

“Our findings offer a promising approach for developing innovative therapies for inflammatory joint diseases as well as for treating osteoporosis, which is often suffered by women after the menopause,” the author noted.
