Air pollution: How to protect your eyes from smog and toxic pollutants

Air pollution can cause serious health problems, including breathing difficulties, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It can affect your eyes, which are sensitive and prone to irritations from allergies, chemicals, and pollutants in the air. As the pollution levels increase, many people experience problems like dry eyes or allergic conjunctivitis, burning sensation, itchy and sore eyes, sensitivity to air and sun and mild blurring of vision, etc. The air quality in Delhi was recorded as hazardous and severe at several places after Diwali.

As the pollution levels continued to spike in Delhi-NCR, doctors have compared the impact of air pollution on public health to smoking 15-20 cigarettes a day.

Air pollution and eye care

Here are a few precautions you can take to help minimise the risk of eye infections from smog and other air pollutants.

Avoid exposure to harmful pollutants and stay indoors, especially in the early hours of the morning when the pollution levels are at their peak - this is the golden rule.

If you have to step out, make sure you wear protective eyeglasses and shades which will help minimise your exposure to the pollution causing agents.

Wash your eyes thoroughly with clean, running water every morning, after reaching home from school/college/work and before going off to sleep.

Wash your hands often and avoid rubbing your eyes even if particulates enter them.

Use lubricating eye drops prescribed by eye specialists.

Do not wear contact lens and eye makeup if your eyes are itchy or feeling sore.

Apply a cool compress to help reduce inflammation.

Do not use screen devices, such as mobile phones and laptops, for long hours. Make sure that you get adequate periods of rest to avoid eye fatigue, dry eyes, and computer vision syndrome.

Eat a healthy diet consisting of foods rich in omega 3s and antioxidants, such as fish, green leafy vegetables, carrots, spinach, almonds, walnuts, and berries - these are extremely good for the eyes.

Install a high-quality air filter or air purifier system at home to help protect your eyes and overall health from pollutants.

Avoid using decongestant eye formulation without medical supervision.

See an ophthalmologist if you have red eyes, discharge, constant foreign body sensation or allergic symptoms.

Take a pledge today to contain pollution, after all, every small effort matters and everyone needs to do their own part urgently in this matter!

6 Great Tips for Removing Scratches from Eyeglasses

Learn the 6 ways to fix scratches on your eyewear so that you can continue to function comfortably until you have time to take them in for a professional repair.

General methods for removing scratches from glasses

1. Baking soda and water

Most of us know that by combining baking soda with various ingredients such as vinegar, you can get some real cleaning done, and if you combine this powder with water you get a mixture that can handle scratches in the glasses. All you have to do is mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a tablespoon of water, apply the mixture to the lenses and rinse them thoroughly with lukewarm water. After that, rub the lens clean with a microfiber cloth.

2. Screen cleaning spray

Like the common lens cleaning spray, screen cleaning spray is used by many people around the world to clean their TV and computer screens. In addition, people use this solution to clean discs from scratches and therefore it’s also suitable for fixing scratches on glasses. All you have to do is spray it several times on your glasses lens and then wipe gently with a soft lens cleaning cloth.

3. Toothpaste

Toothpaste is used mainly for a fairly obvious purpose, but if your glasses are scratched leading to the inability to see through them, it can also help in this area. All you have to do is rub a little toothpaste on your hand and massage the scratches on your lens in a circular motion. Then, wipe the paste with a glass cleaning cloth. If the scratches are very deep, you can repeat this action between 3 to 5 times.

Methods for removing scratches from plastic lenses

1. Solid wax

Most of us are familiar with the use of wax to remove hair from different areas of the body, but this material can be used in its solid form to temporarily repair scratches on plastic lenses. All you have to do is rub some wax in a circular motion on the scratches until they disappear. Then, gently clean the glasses of the remaining wax.

2. Vinegar and soda powder for drinking

This tip is similar to the water and baking soda method, it just replaces water with vinegar to cover scratches on plastic lenses. All you have to do is mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a teaspoon of vinegar, rub the paste on the scratches, and then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. After washing, gently rub the lenses with a cloth and dry them thoroughly.

3. Dish soap

We all know that the purpose of dish soap is to clean our kitchenware, but surprisingly, it can and can also be used to remove scratches from the plastic lenses of your eyeglasses. All you have to do is apply some liquid dish soap to the scratches and rub it in. Afterward, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, dry, and wipe the lenses with a glass cleaning cloth.

The moisture which collects on eyeglasses causes a great deal of trouble, but if the glasses are rubbed daily with soap, and well polished afterwards, a very thin, invisible film of soap remains, which has the effect of preventing the condensation of moisture on the glass.
