Cardiologist with 20 years of experience shares 3 things everyone gets wrong about ageing: ‘Your heart tells your age…’

As we age, the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and dementia also increases. But worry not, because healthy ageing is achievable. All it requires is adopting and maintaining a few key behaviours, which in turn can help older adults live longer, healthier lives.

However, there is no harm in beginning to adopt these lifestyle habits early. After all, prevention is better than a cure. Dr Sanjay Bhojraj, MD,cardiology, a functional medicine doctor, in an Instagram post shared on November 4, listed 3 things everyone gets wrong about ageing; for you to avoid them and better your overall health as you age.

What everyone gets wrong about ageing?

Sharing the video, Dr Bhojraj wrote, “ 20 years as a cardiologist and no one believes me when I tell them…these 3 things everyone gets wrong about ageing.” Here are the 3 things the cardiologist highlighted:

1. Most people think ageing is about wrinkles, metabolism, or ‘just genetics.’ But after two decades studying the heart, I can tell you, it’s not.

2. The truth is, your heart tells your age long before your face does. And most people are speeding up that clock without realising it.

3. It’s not about what you eat once in a while: It’s the daily habits you think are ‘healthy’ that are actually ageing your cells, your arteries, and your energy.

How to increase longevity?

Now that you know these factors about ageing, it is also necessary to educate oneself about habits which can boost longevity. Dr Jeremy London, MD, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with over 25 years of clinical experience, highlighted 5 habits proven to increase longevity in a November 4 Instagram post.

He stressed the importance of exercising daily, eating a healthy and wholesome diet, getting enough rest and recovery, maintaining meaningful relationships, and incorporating sauna or heat therapy. Understand more about how these habits can help you here.

Cardiologist Recommends Four Simple Changes To Slash Cholesterol Better Than Statins

A cardiologist has listed four simple lifestyle changes you can make to reduce LDL, or bad cholesterol levels, in your body without taking medicines. According to Dr. Adriana  Quinones-Camacho, high cholesterol levels are extremely problematic for your heart health and should be kept within limits.
Bad cholesterol, which builds up in the walls of your arteries over years, leads to the formation of plaque, which narrows and hardens the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. LDL then causes atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, thereby increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes and causing reduced blood flow to vital organs. High LDL levels are caused by factors that include an unhealthy diet – high in saturated and trans fats, a sedentary lifestyle, excessive smoking and drinking, genetics, obesity, and certain medical conditions like diabetes.

Changes recommended to lower cholesterol

To avoid taking statins, you can naturally make some tweaks to your daily diet and lifestyle that help you keep your cholesterol levels good. These changes could be more effective than statins, lowering cholesterol permanently and improving your heart health. The four recommended changes by Dr Adriana are:

Consume fats wisely

Make sure to stay away from saturated fats and only consume unsaturated ones, as what kind of fats you consume has a huge impact on your cholesterol levels. Foods that are packed with omega-3 fatty acids – like walnuts, salmon, flaxseeds, and mackerel – are great for your heart health.

Lower intake of sugar and eat more fibre

More fibre in your diet can help reduce high cholesterol levels. According to Dr Adriana, fibre helps lower the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream and leads to significant improvements in your heart health.

Exercise daily

Daily exercise and workouts have a positive effect not just on your physical health but also impact your cardiovascular health. Studies say almost any kind of exercise has a major impact on cholesterol – bringing it down. Also, since psychological stress is a contributing factor to high cholesterol, regular workouts – running, walking, strength training, and even yoga – can mitigate that risk.

Get tests done

Always be in touch with your doctor and get regular heart tests done to know what condition you are in. Talking to your doctor can help determine lifestyle changes you should make along with any medication that may be a good fit for you.

How often should you get your cholesterol tested?

According to experts, you need to get your cholesterol levels checked, depending on your:

Age

The older you get, the more often you need to have your numbers checked.

Family history

If you have a close biological family member with a history of heart disease, you face a higher risk of heart problems, too. You may need cholesterol tests more often if your family member has high cholesterol or a history of heart attack or stroke.

Risk factors for heart disease

If you have a heart disease diagnosis, you will need cholesterol tests more often.

Gender

Males need more frequent tests starting at a younger age.

How To Take Care of Your Lungs and Live Well With COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive one that worsens over time. It can deteriorate one's quality of life as time passes. Making some lifestyle modifications can go a long way in improving one's quality of life. In an exclusive interaction with The HealthSite, Dr. Arvind Kate, Pulmonologist at Zen Multispecialty Hospital, Chembur shares some vital tips to manage this condition and live well.

Do you have symptoms such as breathing problems, cough, mucus production, and wheezing? It could be due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). If you have been already diagnosed with COPD, you need to learn about the strategies that are very useful in managing the condition. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be termed as a chronic inflammatory lung disease leading to obstructed airflow from the lungs. Chest tightness, tiredness, swelling of feet, ankles, legs, unintentional weight loss, and frequent respiratory infections are some of the other symptoms of it. Smoking, long-term exposure to dust particles, and other respiratory infections can cause COPD. The doctor will determine the proper line of treatment for you after evaluation.

Tips To Take Care Of Your Lungs When You Have COPD

Below, Dr. Kate gives you a quick low down on the strategies to swear by when you have COPD.

Vaccination: You can take the flu and pneumonia vaccine at least once before age 65, as recommended by your doctor.

Hand washing: This is the key to eliminating germs and enjoying a disease-free life. Avoid dust, allergens, and molds to manage this condition.

Bid adieu to smoking: Smoking can kill. But many people fail to take this warning seriously. Smoking can not only lead to COPD but even lung cancer. You will have to opt for a smoking cessation program.

Opt for an air purifier: COPD tends to trigger breathlessness and cough. Indoor air can be polluted. Thus, it will be a good idea to use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. The purifier can filter even the fine particles and toxins. In addition, always make sure the house is clean by washing the carpets, rugs, and bedding.

Exercise daily: You will have to stay physically active in order to enhance the circulation and help the body use oxygen more efficiently. You will have to maintain an optimum weight too. Exercising furthermore strengthens the immune system, and keeps allergies and infections at bay. You can choose activities like swimming, cycling, walking, jogging, aerobics, yoga, Pilates, Parkour, and Zumba. But, before starting any fitness routine, just consult a fitness expert.

Eat a well-balanced diet: It is a good idea to opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid junk, spicy, oily, canned, and processed foods. Do not have sodas, colas, and fruit juices. Eat nutritious meals and avoid eating heavy meals. The meals should not be high in calories.

De-stress: Yoga or meditation is a great way to de-stress. Plus, you need to get enough sleep of 8 hours on a daily basis. Keep your medication handy and stock it properly. Stay in touch with the doctor, if there are abnormal changes in the body.

Breathing exercises: Doing these exercises can increase lung capacity and help you breathe freely. You can ask the experts regarding the exercises that are suitable for you.
