Now doctors may predict accurate treatment for patients

A recent research may enable doctors to use the genetic profiles of patients to predict with great accuracy which treatment and prevention protocols will work for them, but requires greater inclusion of ethnic minorities as well. An anthropologist, and bio-ethicist said that to improve medical care researchers need more data about the individual differences that make each of us unique.

“Without engaging underrepresented communities in genetic studies, efforts to move precision science forward may recapitulate ongoing inequities in health care and limit and bias the research. The early stages of precision medicine offer a critical window in which to intervene before research practices and their consequences become locked in,” she said in the study which was published recently.

Precision medicine relies on the collection of bio-specimens, electronic records and other sources of behavioral and environmental data, she said.

Diseases can present differently among ethnic groups. They may, for example, appear at an earlier age, or they may progress more rapidly or respond disparately to treatment.

The study will explore how these centres recruit participants and collect, measure and share data. It will also examine how they communicate the findings of their research.

“We are looking to see if there are unintended consequences that would limit researchers’ ability to meet diversity recruitment goals, address social and biological causes of health disparities, and distribute the benefits of precision medicine equitably,” she said.

She warned that building a diverse genetic database may prove challenging. He also stressed that, as a result, recruiting for diverse participation alone is not nearly enough.

“An ethics of inclusion demands transparency and a culture of openness. Precision medicine studies must open themselves up to multidisciplinary teams that include social scientists, ethicists, and policymakers who can identify and implement practices that respect the histories and concern of diverse populations-and recognize where reform is needed,” she said.

Advice From a 104-Year-Old Doctor

Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, from Japan, turned 104 recently. One of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators, Hinohara's magic touch is legendary. Since 1941, he has been healing patients  and teaching. He has published around many books since his 75th birthday, including "Living Long, Living Good", which sold more than 1.2 million copies.
As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Dr.Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life - a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself. Nearly 10 years ago, he was interviewed, and gave his advice for a long and healthy life. Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara's main points for a long and happy life are:
1. All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common: None are overweight.
For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.
2. Always plan ahead.
My schedule book is already full until next year, with lectures and my usual hospital work.
3. There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65.
The current retirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only 125 Japanese people were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the age of 100...
4. Share what you know.
I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, others for 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.
5. When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.
Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery? I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.
6. To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff.
I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving.
7. My inspiration is Robert Browning's poem "Abt Vogler."
My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.
8. Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.
If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: we all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.
9. Don't be crazy about amassing material things.
Remember: you don't know when your number is up, and you can't take it with you to the next place.
10. Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, and they must accept every patient who appears at their doors.
We designed St. Luke's so we can operate anywhere: in the basement, in the corridors, in the chapel. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives.
11. Science alone can't cure or help people.
Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. Each person is unique, and diseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones.
12. Life is filled with incidents.
On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.
13. Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do.
My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at Duke University in North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes. Later I found a few more life guides, and when I am stuck, I ask myself how they would deal with the problem.
14. It's wonderful to live long
Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one's family and to achieve one's goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours a day, seven days a week, and love every minute of it.
15. Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot
We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.

Scientists develop app to monitor patients at risk of heart failure

Scientists  have developed a mobile app that can remotely monitor patients at risk of heart failure and provide them with medical assistance.

Developed by its Computational Biology group, the ‘Dhadkan’( a Hindi word meaning heartbeat) app can automatically send notifications to both the doctor and the patient, in case of any drastic changes in patient’s data indicating possibility of imminent heart failure.

The mobile app has been designed to be ‘easy-to-use’ so that people in rural areas can also benefit.
“Dhadkan app will be of immense help to patients who live in distant areas and cannot come at regular intervals to tertiary care hospitals,” said an assistant professor at department of biotechnology.

“It collects patient’s data (at any desired interval) on blood pressure, heart rate, and weight, and transmits it to the authorized caregiver (a doctor, nurse or paramedic) who is linked to the patient during the initial registration,” he said.

The app also provides for two-way communication between doctors and patients. In addition, patients have the freedom to send ECG reports to the doctor if needed.

The app will be used for conducting a randomized control trial on 100 heart failure patients at a hospital to validate its utility and to suggest any new features that can be incorporated.

India has about 10 million patients at risk of heart failure. The app will also help in the surveillance of incidence, prevalence and outcomes of heart failure.

Don't change your doctor if you want better health

Do not dump your family physician at the slighted pretext as a 'deep' relationship with the doctor can help improve your health, a study said.

Researchers from University of Bristol in Britain have found that patients tend to open up and share their health concerns more with a doctor they have known for long.

"This could be because patients feel more comfortable raising additional issues with a doctor they feel they know well, or because more issues can be addressed within the time available as the doctor knows the patient and their medical history," said Matthew Ridd from Bristol University's school of social and community medicine.

"This research study is the first of its kind to show how seeing the same doctor can positively affect consultations," Ridd said.

The researchers collected data from 22 practices in Bristol and recorded consultations between 190 patients and 30 general physicians.

They looked at whether consultation length and the number of problems and issues raised were affected by patient-doctor continuity.

Analysis showed that almost a third of patients had a "deep" relationship with their doctor, which, in turn, encouraged them to raise 0.5 more problems (a topic requiring a doctor to make a decision or diagnosis) and 0.9 more issues (the number of topics raised within each problem, such as symptoms) during each consultation.

This may mean many more problems and issues are addressed over the course of several visits.

"Participants mostly reported a strong relationship with their doctor, built up over time. There was evidence that patients raised more problems and issues with doctors that they felt they had a deep relationship with," Ridd said.

Natural Doctors Around US, Make Use Of Them Fully

Ever heard of SIX FREE DOCTORS,
whose advice is most crucial to a healthy life style?
But we do not pay any heed to it as there are no visiting fees!
Therefore their value is unimportant!
These are:
1. SUNLIGHT:
The sun says, spend a little time with me while reading,
exercising, listening to music, meditating,
even chatting up with friends - do it with me!
Just you and me, cause I am your BEST friend.
Physically and metaphorically Sunlight is beneficial to all.
Giving light, its best, to everyone, regardless of caste or creed.
2. WATER:
Certain number of glasses of water in a day,
replenish all the liquids of the body.
And H2o is oxygen to every cell in the body.
Our body thrives on fresh water.
It is the greatest detoxifying agent ever produced.
And it is FREE!
3. AIR:
Your Prana Shakti - Life breath!
Just being aware of your breathing for a little while,
invigorates every cell in the body.
PRANAYAM
( deep breathing )
This is a must,
to exhale all carbon and take in all oxygen,
in a clean and open environment.
It is a luxury today to breathe fresh air.
Do not neglect this.
Holding a breath and then releasing it,
lears all the diseases in the body.
4. DIET:
After consuming 3 of the 5 natures elements
(Ether, Water, Air, Earth & Fire) get to the natures produce.
Vegetables & fruits.
The Lord has provided plenty of choice.
No need to be a Vegan,
but the amount of cleansing the vegetables and fruit
does to the system is amazing!
The enzymes thus produced protect every cell in the body.
Proteins are present in lentils and yogurt too.
Too much meat takes away 70% of the energy to digest it.
So be moderate.
We are basically herbivores and not carnivorous - by nature.
5. EXERCISE:
How can anything be consumed without
the corresponding arrangement to digest the same?
The body must move.
Walking can be a good form of exercise!
But stretching the body is very essential.
Starting from bed, when waking up and then
being physically vibrant through the day.
Household work is NOT an exercise, it’s a chore!
Exercise in a proper state of mind and not under stress or duress. Relaxation is the reason for exercising a healthy state of mind.
Exercise alone and not rushing!
6. REST:
Last but not the least the 6th doctor is REST!
None of the above is possible without enough sleep,
relaxation and rest from meetings a deadline!
Rest is the most important factor which gives impetus to all other 5!
So do not neglect it. Resting with beautiful,
positive and creative thoughts is of course always recommended.
If you have negative thoughts, keep slogging,
so you do not have the time to nurture them.
When resting have all the positive thoughts, nourishing thoughts, followed by love and compassion towards all the relationships you encounter.
