16 Wonderful Ways to Calm Down In Different Places

Relaxation has many advantages: It slows down breathing, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress in muscles, prevents exhaustion, increases self-confidence and improves mood, concentration, and memory, so it's no wonder that we all strive to be calm all the time. However, busy daily life often compels us to deal with stressful frustrating moments in which it is hard to keep cool.

Whether it's on the road, in the office or at home with your children, different events can harm your peace, and for that, we’ve collected 16 simple ways for you to easily relax in different situations in life.

In the car

While driving, you can’t afford to relax. The body is alert, the eyes detect possible dangers and the brain tries to calculate the distance between your car and the other vehicles around to you. If all these reasons are not bad enough, add the traffic jams, the bus leaving the station without signaling, and the fact that you have a meeting that starts in ten minutes and the traffic light refuses to change. To stay cool while driving, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the following methods and tips.

1. Do some light exercise - Light physical activity has been found to reduce stress and contribute to a sense of relaxation, even if it is a very light activity. One simple way to do this is to hold on to the wheel, tense up your muscles and release. There is also another exercise you can do while waiting by a light, which is designed to strengthen the shoulder muscles: Place two hands on the steering wheel and relax the shoulders so that your elbows bend at 90 degrees, then push your hands towards the wheel and let go. The subsequent tensing and releasing were found to soothe the muscles and the body.

2. Take advantage of the waiting time at traffic lights for deep breathing - If someone cuts you off on the road and you begin to feel anxious or stressed, slowly breathe in air through your nose and then breathe out through your mouth. A deep breath lets more oxygen into the body than normal breathing and stimulates the natural relaxation mechanisms of the body.

3. Sing loudly – While radios have become more or less obsolete, there is still one place where everyone listens to them. While traffic jams and traffic can lead to tension and stress, if you turn up the volume of the radio and sing loudly, you will find that the trip to work is not so terrible and can even be nice.

4. Add natural smells to your ca
r - You get a fragrance dispenser from the gas station and hang it on the front mirror, thinking that a pleasant smell won’t hurt anyone, but what you may not know is that different smells can affect your mood. Studies have found that mint, for example, helps maintain alertness and reduce stress, while coffee and lemon scents help improve concentration and contribute to lucid thinking.

At work

Heavy traffic on the road can throw you off, but there are days where your workload is no less heavy and you may succumb to the stress of it all. However, certain methods of relaxation have been found to reduce stress and improve your functioning in the workplace!

5. Change the background of your computer screen - If you work on a computer, sometimes a simple action like changing your desktop background from a blank screen to a picture of nature can do wonders. Looking at nature for a few minutes, even if only through a picture, may increase your ability to concentrate and contribute to the sense of calm. Choose a favorite landscape of a place where you have been or always dreamed of being and just looked at it; your cause for stress and anxiety will simply disappear.

6. Concentrate on one task at a time -
Even if your to-do list runs longer than one page, focusing on the whole thing will only lead you to feel stressed and depressed and will not allow you to do the tasks best. So, focus on a single task each time. While the amount of work will remain the same and the rest of the tasks won’t go away, focusing itself can lower your stress levels, increase concentration, and allow you to do your best on each task.

7. Chew gum - If you feel stress and are not late for a meeting, pull out a piece of gum and start chewing. In addition to its wonderful taste, chewing gum can help reduce levels of stress and anxiety, depression and exhaustion, as found in a 2011 study.

8. Listen to music with alpha sound waves
– The brains electrical activity divides into 4 frequencies: beta, alpha, theta, and delta. The brain usually works on beta waves during the day-to-day operation, the alpha frequency is the frequency characteristic of the state of relaxation. During work and intense thinking, the brain transmits beta waves, which in a high amount can lead to stress and tension. Listening to music that has alpha waves can change the frequencies in the brain, allowing it to relax and the body to renewable energies. Alpha waves also improve memory and help concentration, so if you listen to this music while you work you can also be a better employee.

With the kids

Our children are the light of our lives, but it is known that too bright a light can cause stress and headaches. The following tips will allow you to remain calm, even when your kids aren’t making it easy.

9. Stop looking at the clock - One of the main causes of anger is the child's lack of listening. You want him/her to take a shower at a certain time, and he/she wants to finish watching their show and shower 15 minutes later than usual. Once you are more flexible in terms of time, you will find that your kids will listen to you more, even if it takes a few minutes longer. In addition, the less tough you are and the more freedom they are given in terms of time, the freer you will be.

10. Hug your kids when you’re angry at them - Children have a special ability to make a person lose it, and often, sending your kids to their room or yelling at them only serves to increase your anger and not teach the child about his/her mistake. Instead, the next time the child argues with or raises their voice, try hugging them and so both of you will calm down and the child will learn that you can solve arguments calmly. In addition, studies show that 20 seconds of hugging may increase levels of oxytocin in the body (the love hormone), which will contribute to a sense of joy and relaxation in you and your child.

11. Exercise together - Small children need to let out a lot of energy and exercise is just the way to do it. Instead of angrily chasing after your kids around the house or at the park, try joining them and you’ll find that you (and your children) are happier and more relaxed.

Let your children count - Every day, take some time out of your day to do some exercise and ask your kids to count out the number of repetitions. In addition to the sense of satisfaction that exercising will give you, your child will be happy that he/she could help, and what could be more reassuring than seeing your child smile?

Take a family bike ride - Try to avoid sitting at home this weekend, especially when the weather is nice. Have your family take their bikes out for a ride, and enjoy a fun activity for the whole family which will help you be more relaxed and happy.

Take the dog out for a walk- Many people choose to bring a four-legged friend home to make their children happy. However, while our kids are the ones that initially wanted them, we adults are the ones who actually take care of them. Try to avoid this situation; Take the kids with you and turn the “chore” into an enjoyable escape from home. In addition, after the dog and the children get to spend some time running around outside, they will be happy to go home and go to bed.

Get in the water with them - A day at the pool doesn’t have to be a disaster, and instead of waiting impatiently in-line to buy a Popsicle, you can get into the water with the children and do some exercise. If they’re old enough, you can challenge them to a race across the pool!

12. Know your moments of weakness - Each parent learns the moments and situations of the day when they tend to be more nervous and stressed than at other times. Try to identify these moments so that you can prepare for them in advance, and neutralize the stressful factor before your children enter the picture. For example, if you get anxious about your child taking a long time to pick out their clothes in the morning, prepare the outfit together the night before. The early preparation will allow you to maintain calm and peace even in the most stressful moments.

At home

Theoretically, your home should be a haven of peace and tranquility, but in practice, this isn’t always true and at home, you may suffer from many distractions and stressors. Therefore, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the following tips.

13. Create a quiet place for yourself - Sometimes it’s hard to find the energy to clean the house up after a long day, and the mess can lead to a sense of unrest. So, find a quiet corner in your house, clear it out of all distractions and make sure there’s a comfortable place to sit in it. Make it clear to the rest of the family that the space is for you only, then shut out that corner with a curtain and try to light it with soft light (open your window curtains during the day and use candles or dimmed lighting in the evening). Whenever you feel stress or anger, you can sit in this private corner and relax.

14. Disconnect all your gadgets-
Choose an hour of the day (when you are at home of course), where you choose not to use electrical gadgets. Turn off the TV and the radio, turn off your phone, and cook nothing. You will soon find that you have little left to do but sit back and relax...

15. Hug yourself every morning - Various stretching exercises help relax your muscles and provide a sense of relaxation. Start each morning with a stretch that will help you start the day with some fun. Lie in bed, bend your knees toward your chest and hug them close to your body (if you wish you can move from side to side). Stay in this position for about 20-50 seconds, release and do it again. This exercise helps to provide a sense of relaxation and is also highly recommended for those who suffer from back pain.

16. Solve thinking and logic games -
Brain games and provide a wonderful way to escape the hardships of the day and feelings of stress and anxiety. Choose your favorite game, make sure it is challenging enough, but not too challenging, so that you don’t experience feelings of stress and despair as a result of your failure.

4 Practical Techniques for Cleansing the Lungs at Home

A variety of respiratory conditions block your lungs with mucus and make breathing extremely strenuous. Hence, people suffering from both acute infections, such as the flu or pneumonia, and chronic lung conditions like bronchiectasis (a condition where the airways become widened and build up excess mucus), cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can greatly benefit from physically draining the excess mucus from the lungs.

One practical technique that will help eliminate excess phlegm build-up that blocks narrowed air passages is postural drainage. Postural drainage is safe for people of all ages, and it can be done at home on your own or with assistance. Here’s how this technique works and how to practice it at home.

What is postural drainage?
Lungs picture over T-shirt
Postural drainage uses gravity to drain excess mucus out of the airways of the lungs by manipulating the position of the body. This way, it helps treat a variety of respiratory problems - both acute and chronic. For instance, if you have the flu, you can use postural drainage to eliminate mucus out of your lungs and prevent more serious infections, such as pneumonia.

The technique belongs to a field of medicine called chest physiotherapy, or airway clearance therapy. The aim of postural drainage is to move mucus from the lung walls into the main airways, which makes it possible for you to cough it out.

If you have someone to help you with postural drainage, you can combine it with percussion - a technique that involves clapping on your chest and sides with a cupped hand, which will loosen the mucus from the lungs and make it easier for you to cough it out.

Easier General tips for postural drainage Postural drainage can be done in many positions, so pick and choose the ones that you find most effective. Before we show you the specific techniques, here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind: A great time to do postural drainage is the morning. Mucus tends to build up overnight, and these drainage techniques will help you eliminate it. Try to do postural drainage at least 1-2 hours after a meal. If you do it immediately after a meal, you may feel nauseous or vomit.

Hold each position for at least 5 minutes.

Note that the chest should be lower than the hips, no matter the position. This will let gravity drain the excess mucus.

You can use pillows, a chair, foam wedges, or lie on your stomach on an exercise ball. Make yourself as comfortable as possible.

As you do the exercise, take long, full, deep breaths. Breathe in through the nose and exhale through the mouth while puffing your cheeks out.

Once you’re done with postural drainage, take 3 forceful coughs. It’s okay if you continue coughing and mucus comes up.

Postural Drainage Techniques

Now onto the particular postural drainage techniques:

Lying down on your stomach

This first technique is most effective for clearing mucus from the lower area of the lungs. The gravity will draw out the phlegm from the bottom of the lungs towards the bronchi, unclogging the airways. This exercise can be done on the floor or on a bed - the choice is yours.

1. Start by arranging a stack of pillows, a beanbag, or an exercise ball in front of you.

2. Lie down on your stomach, with your body draped over the pillows.

3. Stretch out the arms over your head and keep your chest lower than the hips.

4. Extend your legs backward for support. Rest your head on the pillow.

5. Take deep, full breaths, pursing your lips and blowing the air out as you exhale.

6. For maximum efficiency, hold this position for 5 minutes.

Lying on the side

This second technique involves lying on your side instead of the stomach. Therefore, you’ll need to do it on both sides to clear out both lungs. When your lungs are tilted, gravity will move the phlegm out. This technique can be practiced in bed right before sleep and is particularly helpful if lung congestion prevents you from sleeping well at night.

1. To begin, place a few pillows to your side - they should be under your hips. Remember that the hips should be higher than your chest, so adjust the number of pillows accordingly.

2. To empty your right lung, lie on the left side.

3. Place your left arm around the waist and keep the right arm beside your head.

4. Keep this posture for 3-5 minutes. Then switch and repeat the same steps on the other side.

Lying on the back

You can also drain excess phlegm by lying on your back, which may be more comfortable for many people. Note that this position is most effective for draining the lower front parts of the lungs.

1. Lie down on a bed on your back.

2. Prop up your hips with pillows or blankets - about 18-20 inches thick. Your hips should be well above the chest.

3. Raise your arms overhead, and rest, breathing deeply for 5 minutes.

Sitting in a chair

This seated version of posture drainage aids in clearing the lower segments of the lungs. Like every position listed here, it can be aided with chest percussion, and the video below will show you how to do it yourself.

 1. Sit in a chair and place several pillows in front of you. The ideal angle is around 30 degrees.

2. Extend your legs at your sides.

3. Hold this posture for 5 minutes. Inhale and exhale deeply.

Are there any risks of postural drainage?

Although postural drainage is considered very safe, it’s best to ask your treating physician if it’s right for you before you begin. There are some contraindications for this procedure, such as broken ribs or a medical history of blood clots.

Last but not least, keep in mind that excess mucus in the lungs can be a sign of a serious respiratory condition. So, if you’ve been coughing and experiencing excess mucus in the lungs, and over-the-counter medications and postural drainage don’t help, see your doctor.

Suffer From Dizziness? These Home Remedies Can Help

We all experience dizziness from time to time - a feeling categorized by light-headedness, unsteadiness or loss of balance that may potentially cause fainting. Dizziness that is accompanied by a feeling of spinning is known as vertigo - slightly different from the nonspecific light-headedness.

Generally, dizziness tends to be a symptom of other conditions like low blood pressure, heart muscle disease, neurological disorders, anemia, allergies, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), tinnitus, ear infections, heart stroke, vision-related disorders, migraines, anxiety disorders and head injuries.

Dizziness may also occur as a result of dehydration, motion sickness, stress, exercise, hormonal changes in the body, or possible side effects from medications. Dizziness tends to be accompanied by symptoms like a false sense of motion, vision changes, blind spots, headaches and slow or irregular pulse. If you experience dizziness regularly, consult with your doctor. Otherwise, you can try some natural home remedies to sort the issue out or try these useful exercises.

1. Deep breathing
 dizziness
Inhaling and exhaling deeply is one of the best remedies to combat dizziness as it will help provide an adequate amount of oxygen to the brain, relaxing the nervous system and reducing dizziness.

 Here's How:

• Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, placing one hand on your abdomen, and the thumb of the other hand against one nostril and close your mouth.

• Inhale slowly through the open nostril, filling your belly with air. Hold the breath in, closing both nostrils and purse your lips.

• After 2 to 3 seconds exhale slowly, extracting air from the belly. Repeat for a total of 10 breaths. Then sit quietly for 5 minutes to avoid getting dizzy again.

2. Drink water
Dehydration tends to be a common cause of dizziness. This can often occur due to not drinking water for a long time, or failing to rehydrate your body during and after exercise. Dehydration may also cause vomiting or diarrhea that causes excessive fluid loss. So, whenever you feel dizzy, try drinking a glass of water to keep you hydrated and keep dizziness at bay. Alternatively, you may also drink herbal tea with some honey. Soups, broths or fruit juices should also work.

3. Eat
dizziness
Low blood sugar levels may also increase the likelihood of feeling dizzy. Hunger can also make you prone to dizziness. So, whenever you feel dizzy, try to eat something. If you are prone to dizziness, it is a good idea that you avoid remaining hungry for a long period of time. Opt for snacks that are high in carbohydrates or sugar, like a chocolate bar or a banana. Fruit high in water content ought to do the trick too. Yogurt is also a good option, as is a handful of roasted nuts like cashews, almonds or walnuts.

4. Ginger
 dizziness
This time-tested recipe works wonders for dizziness and nausea that often occurs as a result. It stimulates the blood flow to the brain and other parts of the body, which helps reduce dizziness. Try chewing on a small slice of fresh ginger root, or suck on it to alleviate the symptoms. Alternatively, you may also sip on ginger ale or ginger tea throughout the day. As another option, you can take ginger supplements, just be sure to consult your doctor for the appropriate dose.

5. Lemon
dizziness
Lemon is an excellent remedy for dizziness. The vitamin C in lemon boosts the immune system and helps the body to fight illness. Several other nutrients in lemon also make it naturally energizing. Just squeeze the juice of 1/2 a lemon into a glass of water and stir in 2 teaspoons of sugar, to get relief from dizziness.

6. Indian Gooseberry/ amla/ nellikai
 dizziness
Also known as amla, this popular Ayurvedic remedy for dizziness provides a rich source of vitamins A and C, boosting your immunity, improving blood circulation, helping to treat and prevent dizziness.

Here's How:
• Grind 2 amla fruits (de-seeded) into a paste.
• Mix in 2 teaspoons of coriander seeds and a cup of water.
• Let it sit overnight then strain and drink the water the next morning. Repeating the process daily for a few days.

 7. Honey
dizziness
The natural sugars found in honey can give you an energy boost and alleviate dizziness. Honey can also help prevent low blood sugar - a common cause of dizziness.

Here's How:
• Mix 2 teaspoons each of honey and raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of cold or hot water. Drinking it 2 times per day.
• Alternatively, you can combine 1 tablespoon of honey and lemon juice with a glass of warm water. Drink it to get immediate relief from dizziness.

8. Gingko Biloba
dizziness
Gingko biloba is another effective home cure that'll combat dizziness. It helps improve blood flow to the brain, preventing dizziness. This herb is also effective in treating tinnitus, which may also cause dizziness.

9. Feverfew
dizziness
Feverfew is another beneficial herb that can treat dizziness. It can also treat accompanying symptoms like headaches, nausea, and vomiting and may also improve blood circulation. Chew on a few, fresh feverfew leaves when you feel dizzy. Alternatively, you may steep 1 teaspoon of dried feverfew leaves and peppermint leaves in a cup of hot water for 15 to 20 minutes, then strain and drink.

10. Eat healthily
 dizziness
A healthy diet can prevent dizziness by eliminating many of the conditions that contribute to it. For instance, you can prevent dizziness that is related to anemia, low blood pressure, and low blood sugar by eating foods that are high in iron, vitamin A, folic acid and fiber. You should also choose foods that are low in sugar and fat.

Include:

• Iron-rich foods like liver, tofu, spinach, almonds, dates, lentils, fortified breakfast cereals, and asparagus.

• Foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges, lemons, bell peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, and spinach.

• Foods rich in folic acid like green leafy veg, liver, sprouts, fortified cereals, peanuts, bananas, and broccoli.
