Treatment with lithium may help decrease the risk of developing dementia

Researchers have identified a link suggesting that lithium could decrease the risk of developing dementia, affecting nearly 10 million people every year.

With more than 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally.

The study, led by researchers from the University of Cambridge, suggested that patients who received lithium were less likely to develop dementia than those who did not, although the overall number of patients who received lithium in the study was small.

The team conducted a retrospective analysis of the health records of nearly 30,000 patients, all over the age of 50.

Their findings, reported in the journal PLoS Medicine, support the possibility that lithium could be a preventative treatment for dementia, and could be progressed to large randomised controlled trials.

"The number of people with dementia continues to grow, which puts huge pressure on healthcare  systems," said first author Dr Shanquan Chen from Cambridge's Department of Psychiatry.

"It's been estimated that delaying the onset of dementia by just five years could reduce its prevalence and economic impact by as much as 40 per cent," Chen added.

Previous studies have proposed lithium as a potential treatment for those who have already been diagnosed with dementia or early cognitive impairment, but it is unclear whether it can delay or even prevent the development of dementia altogether, as these studies have been limited in size.

Lithium is a mood stabiliser usually prescribed for conditions such as bipolar affective disorder and depression. "Bipolar disorder and depression are considered to put people at increased risk of dementia, so we had to make sure to account for this in our analysis," said Chen.

Further, the researchers said they expected to find that patients with bipolar disorder were more likely to develop dementia, since that is the most common reason to be prescribed lithium, "but our analysis suggested the opposite," said Chen.

"It's far too early to say for sure, but it's possible that lithium might reduce the risk of dementia in people with bipolar disorder," Chen noted, adding further experimental medicine and clinical studies are needed to see if lithium really is helpful in these conditions.

Everyday hygiene reduces need for antibiotics by 30 per cent

Improved everyday hygiene practices, such as hand-washing, decreases the risk of common infections by up to 50 per cent, reducing the need for antibiotics by up to 30 per cent, according to a new position paper. Global public health experts are now calling for home and community hygiene to become part of strategic plans to reduce hundreds of thousands of deaths from AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) globally each year. The position paper is published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC). As witnessed during the recent global efforts to delay the spread of COVID-19, hygiene practices, including hand-washing, have become an essential part of everyone's daily routine and are considered to be the first line of defence in reducing the spread of common infections. However, national and international AMR strategies, while focussing on the important role of hygiene in the healthcare setting, fail to recognise the key role that home and community hygiene plays.

Diabetes-friendly nut: How many almonds should you consume daily

Almonds are extremely healthy and are a powerhouse of nutrients — from vitamins and minerals to healthy fats. Considered as a nutritious snacking option to kill hunger pangs during the day, almonds are known to lower blood pressure, control blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and even alleviate constipation, respiratory disorders and anaemia. They are also considered good for hair, skin (psoriasis), and dental care. But do you know how much one should consume in a day?

A handful of almonds is enough. “Try and budget in such a way that one can include as many healthy items in their daily diet as possible. Also, try and exclude processed and refined foods that don’t have much nutritional value. Invest a little more in your health now, you can be saved more from illnesses and diseases later,”

Adding that almonds are one of the easiest foods to include in your diet, she suggests eating a handful before starting the day, or even as an evening tea time snack. “You can even add them to your food preparation. As per a recent research, inclusion of 45 grams of almonds in your everyday diet can help in the reduction LDL (bad cholesterol) and alleviate conditions like dyslipidemia. Almonds, when replaced with other carbohydrate-rich snacks, can effectively help in reducing LDL and total cholesterol, thus making you healthier in the long run,” she further added.

One handful of almonds gives you not only six grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fiber, and 75 mg of calcium, but also 13 grams of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are the heart-healthy fats that help lower total cholesterol and LDL (monounsaturated fats help raise HDL levels too), which can decrease the risk of heart disease.

According to the study conducted at United States Department of Agriculture and US Food and Drug Administration, it is safe for a person to consume one ounce (about 20–23) of soaked almonds on daily basis.

Almonds are known to have satiating properties that promote feelings of fullness, and help keep you away from unhealthy snacks by alleviating hunger pangs. This way, almonds also help in maintain weight goals.
