5 doctor-approved ways to beat heatstroke this summer

Summers in India aren’t what they used to be as heatwaves are getting longer, stronger, and more dangerous.

In 2024 alone, there were more than 40,000 reported cases of heatstroke and hundreds of deaths. In fact, some cities stayed above 45°C for long periods of time.

Even one day of extreme heat has been linked to a higher risk of death, which shows how serious this public health threat has become.

Firstpost spoke with Dr Mohit Sharma, Internal Medicine, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, who shared his expert advice on how one can safeguard themselves this summer.

1. Stay ahead of your hydration

According to Dr Sharma, the best way to protect yourself is to stay hydrated.

“Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink, because that’s a delayed signal. Most adults need at least 2.5 to 3.5 liters of fluid every day, and more if they are in direct heat,” he says.

Just drinking water isn’t always enough. “To replace electrolytes lost through sweating, drink coconut water, buttermilk, or oral rehydration solutions,” he adds.

2. Stay away from the hottest times

The heat load on the environment is highest between noon and 4:00 pm.

“The body’s cooling systems, like sweating, don’t work as well, especially when it’s humid. Don’t spend too much time outside during these hours. If you have to, use physical barriers like umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses, and take breaks often in shady or air-conditioned areas,” states the expert.

3. Wear clothes that help your body cool down

Clothes have a direct effect on how well you can control your body temperature.

“Cotton fabrics that are loose and light in color let air flow better and sweat evaporate more easily. Tight or synthetic clothing holds in heat and can make thermal stress worse, which raises the risk of heat exhaustion,” mentions the doctor.

4. Change your eating habits during heat waves

“Eating a lot of food makes your body produce more heat. Instead, choose smaller, lighter meals that are high in water, like fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and citrus,” shares Dr Sharma with us.

According to him, simply adding salt to drinks like lemon water can help keep sodium levels in check, especially for people who sweat a lot.

5. Be aware of early warning signs

Dr Sharma explains that signs of a heatstroke include fatigue, dizziness, headaches, nausea, or muscle cramps.

“If you don’t pay attention to them, you could get heatstroke, which could kill you,” cautions the doctor.

What to do? Well, “moving to a cooler place, drinking water, and cooling down the body are all things you can do right away. If you feel confused, faint, or sweat less than usual, you need to see a doctor right away,” says the doctor.

Heat waves are no longer rare; they happen all the time and are a health emergency. India has had a lot of heat-related deaths over the years, so being aware and taking action early can save lives. Prevention is still our best defense.

These fruits can keep you better hydrated than water in the summer

When temperatures spike, hydration becomes critical. But drinking more water is only part of the equation. What many people miss is that the body does not just need fluids. It needs the right balance of electrolytes and nutrients to actually retain that fluid.

As health experts point out, hydration is not just about intake but absorption. The body requires minerals like potassium and sodium to maintain fluid balance, especially in extreme heat.

This is where fruits come in. Water-rich fruits do more than quench thirst. They combine high fluid content with vitamins, natural sugars and electrolytes, helping the body absorb and hold on to hydration more efficiently than plain water alone. According to nutrition research, many fruits contain upwards of 85–90% water, contributing significantly to daily hydration needs.

Watermelon: More than just water

Watermelon is made up of about 91% water, making it one of the most hydrating foods available.

But its benefits go beyond that. It also contains potassium, magnesium and antioxidants like lycopene, which support fluid balance and reduce heat-related stress on the body.

Cucumber: The underrated hydrator

Often overlooked, cucumber is nearly 95–96% water, one of the highest among commonly consumed produce.

Its high water content, combined with minerals like potassium, makes it particularly effective during peak summer when dehydration risk is high.

Strawberries: Hydration with nutrients

Strawberries are about 90–91% water and are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

This combination helps not just with hydration but also with reducing inflammation and supporting overall immunity.

Oranges: Electrolytes matter

Oranges offer hydration with an added advantage — electrolytes. With high potassium content and significant water volume, they help replenish what the body loses through sweat.

This makes them particularly useful in hot climates where electrolyte imbalance is common.

Cantaloupe and muskmelon: Summer staples for a reason

With roughly 90 per cent water content, melons are both cooling and nutrient-dense. They also provide vitamin A and vitamin C, supporting immune function while keeping the body hydrated.

Why fruits can outperform plain water

The idea that fruits can “hydrate better than water” is not entirely literal — water remains essential. But experts say foods rich in water, fibre and electrolytes help the body retain fluids longer.

Fruits deliver hydration in a more sustained way because they combine fluid with nutrients. In contrast, drinking large amounts of water alone can sometimes lead to quicker excretion, especially if electrolyte levels are low.

At the same time, nutrition experts caution that fruits should complement, not replace, water intake, contributing to overall hydration alongside fluids.

5 Nutrients That Can Help Boost Your Hearing

As we age, our hearing is one of the first things to go. However, it doesn’t just happen overnight, it starts to go slowly. You start noticing that you have to turn the TV volume up a little, or maybe you will find yourself asking your friends to repeat themselves more often. Hearing loss isn’t just a nuisance – it can compromise your safety if you cannot hear what’s going on around you.

Thankfully, there are some safe and natural ways to start boosting your hearing right away. Here are 5 nutrients you can add to your diet to take control of your hearing.

1. Zinc
You might know it as the mineral that can boost your immune system and support prostate health, but it’s also a good way to keep your hearing at its best.

Research has shown that taking 50 mg of zinc each day for 2 months reduced symptoms of tinnitus in 82% of subjects. Tinnitus is a ringing in the ears, and it can be the result of injury or age-related hearing loss.

Another study found that zinc can improve how quickly people recover after experiencing sudden hearing loss. A High level of this mineral in the blood was associated with better quality of hearing.

You can get zinc from oysters, nuts, eggs, and pumpkin seeds.

2. Resveratrol
This antioxidant supports heart health and a longer life. However, a surprising benefit is that it may actually help restore your hearing.

In a study, resveratrol dramatically lowered the amount of COX-2 in the inner ears of rats after exposure to 24 hours of noise. COX-2 is a protein that causes inflammation and may contribute to hearing loss. Resveratrol decreases inflammation and fights free radicals in the body. It is very important to keep these in check to protect against diseases and hearing loss. You can get resveratrol from red wine and from grapes.

You can also buy it as a supplement from most health food stores.

3. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
This can reduce oxidative stress from exercise, replenish glutathione levels, and even prevent cancer from forming. Its oxidative stress protection is what makes it great at keeping your hearing intact.

A study found that supplementing with 1,200 mg of NAC per day for two weeks significantly decreases noise-related hearing loss.

Another study found that taking a NAC supplement did not completely prevent hearing loss, but it did significantly reduce it after prolonged exposure to noise.

Since NAC does not occur naturally in food, you have to take this one as a supplement if you want to help your hearing. However, if you eat poultry or yogurt, you can get a good amount of cysteine, which your body can convert into NAC.

4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s help to fight inflammation and prevent heart disease, but they have also been shown to prevent hearing loss. One study found that eating two servings of fatty fish a week reduced the risk of age-related hearing loss by over 40% in nearly 3,000 people over the age of 50. Hearing loss as a result of old age may not be due to the ears, but a problem with how the brain communicates with them. So in addition to fighting inflammation, omega-3s can help signals get sent between your brain and ears more effectively. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, soybeans, and spinach. It can also be taken as a supplement.

5. Vitamin A
This vitamin is known to help maintain a strong immune system, but it also plays a role in protecting your quality of hearing as you grow older.

In a study of nearly 3,000 subjects over the age of 50, supplementing with vitamin A helped reduce the risk of moderate to severe hearing loss by almost 50%.

Vitamin A can be found in carrots, sweet potatoes, lettuce, dried apricots, fish, liver, cantaloupe, and bell peppers, to name but a few.
