‘Evidence is mounting’ that soil pollution can lead to cardiovascular disease

Heavy metals, pesticides, and plastics found in soil could be detrimental to heart health, a new study has found.

The team behind the findings have encouraged people to buy food grown in ‘healthy’ soil and wear a face mask around airborne dust outdoors.

The German researchers say that exposure to polluted soil increases oxidative stress in blood vessels; causes inflammation; and disrupts a person’s body clock – all of which can lead to cardiovascular disease.

Author Professor Thomas Münzel, from the University Medical Center Mainz, said: “Soil contamination is a less visible danger to human health than dirty air. But evidence is mounting that pollutants in soil may damage cardiovascular health through a number of mechanisms including inflammation and disrupting the body’s natural clock.”

It is believed that at least nine million deaths a year can be attributed to air, water and soil pollution. Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 60% of disease and death linked to pollution, including heart attacks, heart disease and arrhythmias.

The study states: “Although soil pollution with heavy metals and its association with cardiovascular diseases is especially a problem low- and middle-income countries since their populations are disproportionately exposed to these environmental pollutants, it becomes a problem for any country in the world due to the increasing globalisation of food supply chains and uptake of these heavy metals with fruits, vegetables and meat.”

Professor Münzel went on to say: “More studies are needed on the combined effect of multiple soil pollutants on cardiovascular disease since we are rarely exposed to one toxic agent alone. Research is urgently required on how nano- and microplastic might initiate and exacerbate cardiovascular disease. Until we know more, it seems sensible to wear a face mask to limit exposure to windblown dust, filter water to remove contaminants, and buy food grown in healthy soil.”

The dangers of airborne dust – and the distance it can travel – has been highlighted, with research showing that soil particles from China and Mongolia were linked to an increased risk of heart attack in Japan. In addition, the number of A&E visits for cardiovascular events increased by 21% in Japan during periods when there were higher levels of Asian dust.

How to choose the right kind of footwear when suffering from diabetes

Choose the right footwear
Diabetes does not only mean fluctuation in the blood sugar level, it affects the person in numerous ways. Ths symptoms include frequent urination, feeling excessively hungry and thirsty, extreme fatigue, blurry vision and weight loss. Owing to its diverse symptoms only eating healthy foods is not enough to manage the symptoms of the disease. It is equally important to make the necessary lifestyle changes to live a healthy and long life.

Diabetes and foot problems
Fluctuations in blood sugar  also damages the nerves and vessels of the feet and for the same reason number of diabetes patients suffer from foot problems. This condition is called Neuropathy. It can cause you to lose all kind of sensation in your foot.

Some people may develop open sores at the bottom of their feet or may develop calluses or thick areas of hardened skin. Nerve damage can also change the shape of your feet and even wounds take longer to heal. That is why it is important to take special care of your foot when dealing with diabetes and seek medical help. Another way to take care of your foot when suffering from this problem is by wearing the right kind of shoes. It is believed that wearing some special kind of shoes available in the market can help to improve the condition by promoting healthy circulation in your feet.

Choosing the right footwear
Wearing comfortable and well-fitted shoes is necessary and can make your feet healthy and manage the symptoms of diabetes. Here are a few things you must look for in your shoes:
Your shoes should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch deeper than normal shoes so that you do not feel uncomfortable when dealing with calluses or hammertoes.

Instead of pointed toes, buy the one with a spacious toe box. This will give enough room to your toes to move and reduce the chance of corns, calluses, and blisters.

Avoid high-heel and high-heeled shoes as they put excessive pressure on your foot.

Do not buy any fancy, strappy and open toe shoes. The straps put pressure on certain points of your feet, which can easily cause blisters. Even slippers are not the best option. Wear laced shoes as they provides better support and fit your feet perfectly.

Whenever planning to buy new shoes, do it at the end of the day. Our feet are swollen at the end and if your shoes fit in at that time, you would not have any problem later.

Other ways to take care of your feet
Apart from wearing the right kind of shoes you also need to take care of feet to ensure that it is healthy. Here are a few things that you can do:

Check your feet every day. In case you develop any new sore or callous, consult your doctor.
Trim your toes nails regularly.

Exfoliate your feet with scrub regularly to smoothen your corns.

Wash your feet daily with warm water
