‘I drink black coffee daily’: Oncologist shares 6 research-backed benefits, from brain health to longevity

Black coffee, in particular, can be a relatively healthy choice when consumed without excess sugar or high-calorie additives. Oncologist Dr Vartika Vishwani shares in her July 27 Instagram post why she drinks black coffee every day, highlighting six potential benefits associated with regular coffee consumption.

1. May lower the risk of premature death

According to Dr Vishwani, research involving around 171,000 adults found that people who consumed 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee daily had about a 30% lower risk of death compared with those who did not drink coffee. However, such studies show an association and do not prove that coffee itself directly increases lifespan.

2. Could lower the risk of chronic diseases

Coffee consumption has also been associated with a lower risk of several chronic conditions, including heart disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Dr Vishwani cited findings from more than 200 meta-analyses suggesting that consuming around three to four cups of coffee a day may be linked to a reduced risk of several chronic health conditions.

3. May support liver health

Your liver may also benefit from moderate coffee consumption. Coffee contains antioxidants and plant compounds that may help reduce inflammation and protect against liver damage. “Your liver loves coffee,” Dr Vishwani wrote, noting that research has linked coffee consumption with a lower risk of fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, liver fibrosis and liver cancer.

 4. May reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes

Coffee may also have a role in metabolic health. According to Dr Vishwani, studies suggest that every additional cup of coffee consumed daily is associated with a roughly 6-7 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Compounds found in coffee, including chlorogenic acids and polyphenols, may help regulate inflammation, glucose absorption and insulin function.

5. May lower the risk of some cancers

Coffee has also been studied for its potential role in cancer prevention and outcomes. “Research suggests that coffee may even reduce the risk of certain cancers,” Dr Vishwani wrote, pointing to studies linking coffee consumption with a lower risk of liver and endometrial cancers.

She also noted that observational studies have found better survival outcomes among some people with colorectal cancer who consumed coffee. These findings, however, do not establish coffee as a cancer treatment.

6. Could benefit brain health

The benefits may extend to the brain as well. Large observational studies have consistently found an association between coffee consumption and a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. Caffeine and other bioactive compounds in coffee are being studied for their potential protective effects on brain health.

Should everyone drink black coffee every day?

Not necessarily. Despite its potential benefits, coffee is not a miracle drink and may not be suitable for everyone. Dr Vishwani advised people with uncontrolled anxiety, certain heart rhythm disorders or existing medical conditions to speak with their doctor before increasing their coffee intake.

For healthy adults, up to about 400 mg of caffeine per day is generally considered a level that can be consumed without significant safety concerns, although individual tolerance varies. Depending on how strong the coffee is, this can amount to roughly 3-4 cups, but cup size and caffeine content can differ considerably.

The oncologist also stressed that coffee should complement, not replace, healthy lifestyle habits. “Coffee cannot replace good sleep. Coffee cannot replace exercise. Coffee cannot replace a healthy diet,” she wrote.

So, if you enjoy your morning black coffee, there may be little reason to feel guilty about it. The key is moderation, individual tolerance and the overall quality of your diet and lifestyle.

Harvard Expert Shares 3 Bs in Your Daily Diet That Protect Against Fatty Liver and Liver Cancer

The antioxidant properties of broccoli, beetroot, and black coffee can help fight against poor diet, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle—all of which lead to liver failure or cancer.

Fatty liver is among the fastest-growing health concerns across the world – mostly due to poor diets, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. While it often progresses without noticeable symptoms, the condition leads to serious and deadly complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, there are a few simple and easily doable changes in your daily diet that can help you prevent getting liver cancer. Harvard and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist, has a few tricks for you.

According to Dr Sethi, there are just three Bs that can be extremely helpful when it comes to reducing your risk of fatty liver or liver cancer, and these are easily available foods. “Science shows these foods can support your liver and overall metabolic health—worth adding to your routine,” he said in a video on social media.
Harvard Expert Shares 3 ‘Bs in Your Daily Diet That Protect Against Fatty Liver and Liver Cancer

The three Bs that reduce your risk of fatty liver

Broccoli

Broccoli is usually a winter vegetable, but it is available throughout the year. Packed with sulforaphane – a compound that promotes liver fat breakdown and inhibits inflammation – broccoli helps support your liver's detoxification processes naturally.
According to many studies, broccoli consumption helps decrease fat accumulation in your liver, reduces liver damage, and helps lower inflammatory markers – thereby helping manage non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, as well. Eating broccoli regularly also increases the expression of genes involved in lipolysis – a process of breaking down fats, which then reduces the amount of fat present in your liver.

Black coffee

Studies say black coffee is one of the best beverages that not only reduces the risk and progression of fatty liver disease but also heals liver damage. Packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties – which have the power to slow liver damage and reduce fat accumulation – black coffee lowers the risk of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, improves liver enzyme levels, and decreases the risk of liver cancer.
Dr Sethi recommends drinking black coffee without sugar or cream for added benefits.
Experts say drinking at least three to four cups of black coffee daily also lowers elevated liver enzymes like ALT and AST, which often signal liver inflammation or damage.

Beetroot

Beetroot is a superfood packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are super effective in fighting against fatty liver disease and liver cancer. Loaded with betaine – a methyl group donor that functions in the normal metabolic cycle of methionine – it helps in cellular hydration and maintains cell function, successfully combating oxidative stress in liver cells. According to studies, consuming beetroot juice – especially when combined with a Mediterranean diet – significantly reduces liver fat accumulation, suggesting its potential as a complementary treatment for NAFLD.
For natural detoxification and cleansing, drink a glass of beetroot juice daily, which can help you detoxify and neutralise harmful toxins and free radicals in your liver.

Drinking habits that can speed up weight loss process

Unhealthy drinking practices contribute to weight gain

Weight loss involves a holistic approach instead of a single target strategy. In order to remove the extra weight you need to focus on weight management first and then you should check your mental preparedness for the same. One should understand the factors behind the weight gain, how addicted you are to the causative factors and what you should do to keep the overindulgence in check.

One of the many factors that contribute to weight gain is unhealthy drinking practice. Sounds strange, but it's true that abnormal drinking habits are more likely to put a person into obesity contrary to the belief that drinking has no role in weight gain.

Here are few drinking habits that one should put into habit in order to manage weight:

Drink more water

Having less water not only hinders weight management, it also disturbs the overall ambience of the body. Ideally an adult should drink 2-4 litres of water per day. Drinking sufficient water helps burn fat and suppresses the appetite which is essential for weight loss.

Apart from weight loss, water provides a number of other benefits to human health. "The daily four-to-six cup rule is for generally healthy people. It's possible to take in too much water if you have certain health conditions, such as thyroid disease or kidney, liver, or heart problems; or if you're taking medications that make you retain water, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opiate pain medications, and some antidepressants," says a Harvard Health report.

Add cinnamon to your evening coffee

Experts say that the ability of the cinnamon to manage the blood glucose level is immensely helpful in weight management. Cinnamon contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits which is another blessing for those trying to lose weight. One teaspoon of cinnamon does contain 1.6 grams of fiber which again makes it an ideal candidate for weight loss.

Replace green tea with every other drinks

Green tea contains a small amount of caffeine which is a popular stimulant for burning fat. It also contains antioxidants called catechins which are known to boost metabolism. High metabolism is the key to weight loss.

Reduce alcohol consumption

As per a report, alcohol can cause weight gain in four ways: it stops your body from burning fat, it's high in kilojoules, it can make you feel hungry , and it can lead to poor food choices. Alcohol consumption is known to lead to beer belly in men.

A study says regular drinking leads to 41% higher risk of getting overweight; those who are already overweight, the risk of getting obese increases by 35%.

Black coffee is the best

Ditch heavy coffees and start having simple black coffee every morning. Though it is difficult to get acquainted with the taste of black coffee as it is without creams, sweeteners, syrups and sugar, having black coffee regularly decreases the belly fat and reduces the extra weight. As per some experts, black coffee has chlorogenic acid which is very helpful to burn fat.
