8 Common Signs of Alcohol Intolerance

After a couple of drinks, some people start feeling symptoms similar to an attack of vegetovascular dystonia, an allergic reaction, or other ailments. They usually don’t realize that these unpleasant effects are caused by the alcohol.

Below you’ll find the common signs of ethanol intolerance, which can easily be confused with the symptoms of other diseases.

1. Fluctuations in Blood Pressure
Those with high arterial pressure often suffer from throbbing pain in the temples, tinnitus, and dizziness. However, if the pressure decreases, then the symptoms can be a loss of vision, dizziness, and lethargy.

2. Runny Nose
We’re used to accepting symptoms such as a blocked nose, sneezing, and being short of breath as those of a common cold, but these symptoms might be the result of alcohol intolerance. There are a huge number of capillaries in the nasal mucosa and when they’re exposed to ethanol, edema develops on them, making it difficult to breathe, causing a sense of nasal congestion.

3. Limbs Edema
When alcohol enters the body, the ethanol provokes intoxication which causes a person to become dehydrated, leading to excretory system failure. As a result, excess fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling.

4. Nausea
Nausea and vomiting won’t come as a surprise if you overdo it with cocktails and shots, but for those with alcohol intolerance, these symptoms might appear even after a small amount of alcohol. Alcohol Intolerance Symptoms

5.Migraines
Migraines are unpleasant enough as they are, but it’s something that’s bound to happen if you drink too much alcohol. If you know that you haven’t been overdrinking, but you’re still experiencing a migraine, it could be a sign of alcohol intolerance. In this case, the migraine would be caused by the release of histamines.

6. Diarrhea
Diarrhea can strike at the most inopportune time, and most people write it off as being caused by low-quality food or a stomach bug. However, this isn’t always the case. If you notice that this happens to you after you drink a little bit of alcohol, it might be that you have an intolerance to it.

7. Redness of the Skin
Reddening of the skin on one’s face and body is an extremely common sign of alcohol intolerance. Some people even have small blisters that look like hives, which is why it’s often confused with an allergic reaction. First, the spots appear on the face and then they can be found on the body. This occurs unevenly: they are located chaotically and resemble a rash. This is why alcohol intolerance is often called the Alcohol Flush Reaction.

8. Increased Body Temperature
This symptom is commonly attributed to colds or cases of food poisoning, but the body temperature can also rise due to alcohol intolerance.

Periodic checks essential after 40 to keep hypertension under check

Readings of blood pressure (hypertension) vary according to conditions, and precautions should be taken to ensure that proper readings are secured, said a chief interventional cardiologist.

Delivering the key-note address at the World Hypertension Day programme organised the Dr. said blood pressure should be measured immediately after the patient has had coffee or cigarette.

“Know your numbers” (blood pressure readings) is the theme of the World Hypertension Day this year.

The patient should sit for a few minutes and calm down after reaching the hospital or clinic. “There is a difference in reading if the patient has a full bladder and men should not wear full sleeves as it effects the readings” he said.

Big fluctuations in blood pressure cause damage to the fine blood vessels in the vital organs. While heart attack was an important side effect of high blood pressure, brain stroke leading to paralysis was also common and a bigger danger, he said.

There was little that could be done for patients with paralysis, therefore prevention of high blood pressure which caused it was more important.

A Dr. said hypertension could be controlled by modification of lifestyle, diet and physical activity.

Paediatric cardiologist said there was great danger in the sudden stopping of medication. This causes the blood pressure to shoot up even higher that when the medication was started.

Asked about low blood pressure, Dr. said there was a great variation in the blood pressures of people. Only those who suffer the symptoms of low blood pressure like giddiness were considered as having low blood pressure. There was no prolonged medical treatment for low BP, he explained.

Later, there was an interesting interaction session with patients who asked questions about reasons for pain after an angiogram, whether there were repeated paralytic strokes and the symptoms of low BP.
