Supplements Show Potential for Kidney Stone Prevention Marilynn Larkin

Certain dietary supplements inhibit the formation, growth, and aggregation of calcium oxalate kidney stones and may ultimately aid in prevention, according to new research presented this week at NUTRITION 2025, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.

“We have searched for many new approaches with a hope of reducing kidney stone disease and its recurrence,” Visith Thongboonkerd, MD, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, told Medscape Medical News.

Recent work by Thongboonkerd and colleagues found that while normal urinary proteins (proteome) inhibit calcium oxalate crystallization, growth, and aggregation, the urinary proteome of individuals who form kidney stones actually promotes these calcium oxalate crystal parameters via oxidative modifications.

The new findings, presented at NUTRITION 2025, represent the team’s efforts to investigate whether dietary supplements could modulate these oxidative modifications, potentially preventing stones from forming.

Inhibitory Effects Revealed

Using crystallization, growth, and aggregation assays, the team compared the modulatory effects of caffeine, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), resveratrol, and trigonelline (at 1, 10, and 100 μM — ie, within their physiologic range in urine) on calcium oxalate crystals.

They found that the supplements had diverse effects: Caffeine inhibited crystal formation, EGCG inhibited crystal formation and growth, NAC inhibited crystal aggregation, resveratrol inhibited crystal growth, and trigonelline inhibited crystal growth and aggregation.

Notably, however, resveratrol also promoted crystal aggregation and thus served as a dual modulator, acting as an inhibitor and promoter at different steps of stone formation.

Further analyses revealed that EGCG was the most potent inhibitor against calcium oxalate crystal formation, whereas resveratrol was the most potent inhibitor against calcium oxalate crystal growth. NAC was the only inhibitor against calcium oxalate crystal aggregation.

The findings support roles of these supplements in kidney stone disease prevention, the authors suggested. “It will take a while before we can draw a clear conclusion that prescribing these supplements would really be beneficial to kidney stone patients, without any harms,” Thongboonkerd acknowledged. Next steps would include validating the in vitro findings in clinical settings.

Weight Loss: 5 super nutrients that can help you lose weight

You cannot shed kilos simply by lifting weights or running for miles. When it comes to weight loss, the kind of food you eat is equally important. The most important things that help in cutting unwanted body fat is eating healthy and clean food. Fruits and veggies are packed with nutrients that are good for health and helps to speed up the weight loss process. So, one has to be very careful about the type of foods they include in their diet. Here are 5 super nutrients that can help you lose weight more effectively.

Monosaturated fats
Including monounsaturated fats in your diet can help you shed kilos and tone your bulging belly. They can even reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular problems and decrease inflammation. Studies show that a diet high in monounsaturated fats led to weight loss similar to that of a low-fat diet provided the calorie intake remains the same.

Fiber
Increasing your intake of soluble fiber, such as beta-glucan and glucomannan, can help you lose belly fat and prevent fat gain. Several studies have shown that people who consume more soluble fiber have a lower risk of belly fat. It also slows down digestion and keeps you full for a longer period of time.

Protein
Protein is the most important nutrient when trying to lose weight. Increasing your protein intake when trying to shed kilos can boost metabolism, reduces appetite and alter several weight-regulating hormones. High protein food items can make you burn more calories around the clock, even when you are sleeping.

Raspberry ketones
Raspberry ketones is the natural substance that provides red raspberry its aroma. It is also found in small amount in blackberries, cranberries, and kiwis. Raspberry ketones can help to increase the production of muscle energizing, fat burning hormone adiponectin.

Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG)

EGCG is a compound found in green tea and has numerous proven health benefits. It helps to reduce inflammation, lose weight and prevent heart and brain disease. The compound is known to increase thermogenesis by burning extra calories.

Healthy drinks along with dietary iron may reduce its benefits

The benefit of green tea depends on the bioavailability of its active components. (Photo: Representational/Pixabay)
Green tea is known for being a powerful antioxidant. But researchers have learned that consuming the healthy drink along with dietary iron may reduce its benefits. "If you drink green tea after an iron-rich meal, the main compound in the tea will bind to the iron," said an assistant professor of nutritional sciences.

"When that occurs, the green tea loses its potential as an antioxidant. In order to get the benefits of green tea, it may be best to not consume it with iron-rich foods," adds the expert. Iron-rich foods comprise of red meat and dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach. According to him, the same results also apply to iron supplements.

Researchers found that EGCG -- the main compound in green tea -- potently inhibits myeloperoxidase, a pro-inflammatory enzyme released by white blood cells during inflammation.
Inactivation of myeloperoxidase by EGCG may be beneficial in mitigating IBD flare-ups. But when EGCG and iron are consumed simultaneously, iron-bound EGCG loses its ability to inhibit myeloperoxidase.

Adding to this complexity, they found that EGCG can also be inactivated by a host protein, which is highly abundant in inflammatory conditions, says the study.

IBD is characterised by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, which results in bloody diarrhea, pain, fatigue, weight loss and other symptoms including iron deficiency/anemia. It is common for IBD patients to be prescribed iron supplements.

In this scenario, the intake of green tea and iron supplements at the same time would be counterproductive as both nutrients would bind and cancel each other out. "It is important that IBD patients who take both iron supplements and green tea know how one nutrient affects the other," the  Dr. said.

"The information from the study could be helpful for both people who enjoy green tea and drink it for its general benefits, as well as people who use it specifically to treat illnesses and conditions," continued the Dr..

"The benefit of green tea depends on the bio-availability of its active components. It is not only matter of what we eat but also when we eat and what else we eat with it," said  a graduate student in immunology and infectious diseases, and first author of the study.

Alzheimer's-like symptoms reversed in mice thanks to special diet

A diet with compounds found in green tea and carrots reversed Alzheimer's-like symptoms in new experiments, a new study suggests.

Researchers say that mice genetically programmed to develop the disease had memory and visual-spatial skills restored and could find their way out of a maze just as well as healthy mice.

The team of researchers note that it's possible the discoveries made in the rodents may not be able to be replicated in humans.

However, they add that the findings could lead to plant-based supplements being used in combination with drugs to prevent or slow down dementia symptoms.

An estimated 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's disease in 2019.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that number will rise to around 14 million over the next four decades.

Sufferers experience a decline in cognitive, behavioral and physical abilities - and there is no cure.
For the study,  the team studied two compounds, the first being EGCG, which is found in high quantities in green tea.

EGCG is an antioxidant that prevents free radicals from forming in the body, thereby protecting against cell and molecule damage.

Previous studies have shown that EGCG protects newly-developed neurons, which helps with cognition and alertness.

The second compound, ferulic acid (FA), is found in foods such as carrots, oats and tomatoes.
FA is an antioxidant that is best-known for its benefits when it comes to skin, such as treating sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles.

The team split the mice with Alzheimer's into four groups and added the same number of healthy mice to each group.

They were given one of four diets: both EGCG and FA, just EGCG, just FA, or a placebo.

The mice underwent several neuropsychological tests - which measures areas such as problem solving, memory, and visual-spatial skills - both before and after the diet.

The researchers noted one test, which is maze in the shape of a Y and tests if the mice can find their way out it.

Following the three months, the mice who were on the combination diet performed just as well as the healthy mice did.

Senior author, a professor of physiology and neuroscience, says it appears that EGCC and FA prevent amyloid beta proteins from entering the brain and smothering neurons, which leads to loss of memory and confusion.

The antioxidants also seemed to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease.

'You don't have to wait 10 to 12 years for a designer drug to make it to market. You can make these dietary changes today,' said the Dr. 'I find that very encouraging.'
