Pressure Points to Relieve Leg Cramps

Muscle cramps in the legs can strike at any time, whether after exercising or during the night. These are unpleasant occurrences that affect many of us, but daily stretching can help prevent them. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or motivation to stretch regularly, leading to chronic cramping. To provide an easy solution, we're sharing five effective pressure points for alleviating leg cramps that will help ease this pain and discomfort.

1. ST-34 - Relieve pain and swelling
ST-34 - Relieve pain and swelling
If you experience cramps at the front of your thigh, you can find relief by applying pressure to the ST-34 pressure point. This pressure point runs along the longitudinal line of the stomach and can effectively treat digestion-related issues, as well as swelling and knee pain. Locate the pressure point by placing your fingertips on the outer edge of the patella and moving upward three fingers. Once you reach the point, gently massage it to reduce the pain.
2. BL-37 - alleviate spasms in the hamstring muscle

The point situated at the back of the thigh, known as "BL-37," is aimed at treating issues related to hamstring muscle contraction. It has been observed that this point can also effectively address lower back pain and strengthen the lower limbs, which can ultimately alleviate back problems. To access this point, place your fingertips in the center of the back of your thigh, as indicated in the figure. While massaging this point, it is important to be gentle as it can be sensitive for some individuals.

3. KI-1 - Relieve the discomfort in the feet and toes
KI-1 - Relieve discomfort in the feet and toes
If you experience muscle spasms in your legs, particularly in the feet or toe area, KI-1 is the ideal point for massage. This point not only helps alleviate leg muscle spasms but also offers relief from other ailments like headaches, neck pain, dry throat, constipation, and nausea. To locate KI-1, stretch your foot until you see two curved lines on either side of the central part at the bottom of your foot. KI-1 can be found exactly where these lines meet. Apply moderate pressure with one finger and gently massage the point after relaxing your foot.

4. ST-36 - alleviate muscle tension in the calves
ST-36 - alleviate muscle tension in the calves.
The most common type of leg cramp is the hamstring muscle spasm. Fortunately, an ST-36 point massage can alleviate this issue. Furthermore, this point is effective in treating various conditions like vomiting, diarrhea, cough, asthma, shortness of breath, insomnia, dizziness, lack of appetite, and depression. To find this point, locate the lowest point on your knee, and move your finger 2.5 cm downwards. Then move about 7.5 cm until you reach the marked point in the picture. Finally, gently massage the spot.

5. GB-34 - Relieve lower limb numbness and much more...
GB-34 - Relieve lower limb numbness and much more...
The final pressure point on our list is similar to the ST-36 point and can help alleviate muscle spasms affecting both calves as well as spasms causing shoulder pain, lower limb numbness, and vomiting. Additionally, it is one of the most effective pressure points for relieving knee pain. To locate this pressure point, place a finger on the side of the leg parallel to the knee line. Move slightly more than 1 cm toward the foot until reaching a bony prominence. This prominence indicates that the correct point has been reached, and it can be gently massaged to help alleviate symptoms.

Felt Twitching in the Body? Watch Out For These Early Symptoms of Cancer

According to a report by World Health Organization, around 9.6 million people died of cancer in 2018. The painful disease is the second leading cause of death in the world. It is a cause of concern among the youth and children. It is no more an old age disease. Cancer is a deadly condition that occurs when your body cells start growing uncontrollably because of some unknown reason and form a tumour. It can develop in any part of your body and can affect your life majorly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further eclipsed cancer care over the past two years. The lack of awareness, absence of pain in early stages and above all the pandemic scare is making many patients postpone their visits to the hospitals.

Cancers put the health care system under tremendous pressure due to the nature of the disease, prolonged treatment and regular checks that follow. Symptoms of Cancer are innumerable however, you can watch out for warning signs.

In some cases, the cancerous tumour can grow and spread through other parts of the body, it can lead to spasms, twitches, or jerking. Muscle twitches happen by involuntary contractions in the area, or uncontrollable twitching of a muscle group that is served by a single motor nerve fiber, according to Times of India report. Why do you feel the twitching sensation?

Cancer symptoms usually occur when the tumour starts pressing on the brain which leads to abnormal functioning of the organ. The brain tumour irritates the neurons present in the brain and can cause muscle contradictions, twitching, numbness and tingling, shallow breathing and loss of consciousness, TOI report said.

It says that tumours which spread through the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and parietal lobe can cause problems in speech, decision making, problem-solving, concentration, and thinking speed functions. The report says that it is imperative to address the symptoms as they appear.

Twitching can also happen for various other reasons including stress, an overdose of caffeine, an unhealthy diet, exercise, or as a side effect of some medicines.

It has been proven by various medical studies that an early diagnosis of cancer can save up to 90 per cent of lives.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms, then it is advised to contact your doctor immediately for further examination.

Does Your Upper Back Hurt With COVID-19? Back Pain

Does Your Upper Back Hurt With COVID-19
COVID-19 can cause upper back pain as well as other body aches that lingers months after infection. Learn about what causes back pain with COVID-19

COVID-19 can cause upper back pain as well as other body aches that lingers months after infection.

A study conducted on 280 people with COVID-19 and published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice (Aug 2021) reported that musculoskeletal symptoms were more frequently reported than respiratory tract symptoms after the infection had resolved.

The most frequent symptom on hospital admission was back pain, and the most common musculoskeletal symptoms were fatigue, spine pain, and muscle ache (myalgia). Each of these symptoms was present in more than 60% of people with post-acute COVID-19. In addition, people were more likely to have post-COVID-19 musculoskeletal symptoms if they had the following during the infection:

  • Presence of back pain
  • Lower lymphocyte and higher d-dimer levels
  • Presence of COVID-19 findings in chest CT scans
  • Longer hospitalization
  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes

What causes back pain with COVID-19?

Back pain and other types of joint and muscle pain in COVID-19 are due to the virus triggering inflammatory processes in the body. The immune system releases interleukins that are proteins that help your body fight the virus.

If you have back pain before COVID-19, it may be aggravated during infection due to two main reasons:

  • Decreased mobility during the isolation period or hospital stay (physical inactivity can cause stiffness and weakness and increase pain)
  • Treatments given for COVID-19 that can put stress on your musculoskeletal system and aggravate pain

Back pain is not always caused by COVID-19. If you have been working remotely at home, sitting for prolonged periods of time, poor posture, or lack of ergonomic equipment may be the cause of your back pain. Moreover, you may have another issue such as spondylosis due to a disc bulge in the spine or a sports injury.

What does back pain due to COVID-19 feel like?

Back pain due to COVID-19 is different from the stabbing or throbbing pain caused by normal back pain abnormalities. It is also different from the soreness you would feel after an intense workout.

COVID-19 back pain feels like cramps or spasms of the muscles, and may persist for several days or even months.

What can you do for back pain?

Regardless of the cause, there are several things you can do to alleviate back pain:

  • Apply a heating pad for about 15-20 minutes 2-3 times a day to the affected area.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen, naproxen, or ibuprofen.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • If your back pain is caused by COVID-19, take your time before resuming normal activities.
  • Contact your doctor if your back pain:
    • Worsens
    • Persists for more than 2-3 weeks
    • Is accompanied by other symptoms such as weight loss or numbness in the limbs
