5 Daily Exercises To Improve Muscular Endurance as You Age

As you get older, it's natural to experience creaky joints, stiff muscles, and aches and pains. However, neglecting to maintain muscular endurance—your muscles' ability to perform repeated contractions against a resistance for an extended period—could spell trouble for your golden years. Fortunately, muscular endurance exercises can help fix bad posture, improve stability, enhance your muscles' aerobic capacity, and maintain your ability to carry out daily activities, according to ACE Fitness. That's why we're here to help you out with five of the best exercises to improve muscular endurance as you age.

Note: Don't confuse muscular endurance (or stamina) with muscular strength. Muscular endurance allows you to do physical activities for longer periods, while muscular strength is your ability to lift or move heavy objects. Essentially, the more stamina your muscles have, the more reps you can do. Research shows that moderate-load muscular endurance strength training is an effective strategy for combating the age-associated loss of strength and muscle mass. Also, engaging your muscles through regular exercise is essential for maintaining their functional capacity as you age. Good-functioning muscles can improve your balance and skeletal structure, reducing your risk of falls and injury, according to the National Institute on Aging.

If you're concerned you've missed the boat on this, we have good news: It's never too late to improve your muscular endurance. To help get you started, we chatted with Margie Young, CPT, a Life Time Champions ARORA certified personal trainer, who shares her top five exercises to improve muscular endurance and stamina as you age.

1. Hip Hinge

An excellent movement for boosting muscular endurance is the hip hinge, where you shift your weight to your heels and push your hips back against a wall while hinging forward at the hips. (You can also perform this exercise with suspension straps.)

"With the hip hinge, you're not bending forward; you're hinging at the hip," Young explains. "Start by standing a few inches in front of (but not touching) a wall. Next, keep your feet parallel and under your hips, your core tight, and simply touch your butt to the wall while bending forward. Then, squeeze your glutes to stand back up."

The hip hinge will increase your range of motion (ROM) and allow you to perform daily activities with ease. So, next time you bend over to pick up the laundry basket, use the hip hinge form to save your lower back.

2. Body-weight Squats

A straightforward exercise that can be done anytime, anywhere is the body-weight squat. To perform these, Young explains, "Sit down and stand up back up, remembering to push through your heels. Multiple sets and repetitions of bodyweight squats help maintain muscle balance and improve functional movement." Perfecting bodyweight squats will come in handy the next time you're squatting down to pick up the kids' toys for the seventh time in a day.

3. Planks

Another great exercise for muscular endurance is the plank. This static hold has several variations that strengthen your core, improve your posture, reduce back pain, and boost coordination. "Plank holds aren't just great for the core, they're great for the entire body and anyone can do them," says Young. "Plank variations include going from a wall to a countertop, the bed or couch, and even the floor. Add intensity by alternating glute-activated leg lift holds while planking."

The Best Exercises To Regain Balance After 60

As you grow older, your physical fitness begins to deteriorate if you don't take action to preserve it. Research actually shows that your balance starts declining once you reach midlife, around 50 years of age. In one study, for instance, adults aged 50 were able to balance on one foot for 45 seconds. Adults aged 70 were able to hold that balance for 28 seconds, and individuals aged 80 and over were only able to manage the balance test for less than 12 seconds. In order to keep up your fitness, we've rounded up the best exercises to regain balance after 60. Your overall health and independence depend on it!

Many individuals in their 50s and 60s who don't lead an active lifestyle lose lean muscle mass, strength, and stability, which can increase their risk of injury, whether it's from picking something up improperly, or falling and not having the balance or strength to catch themselves. This is why it's so important to stay active throughout your life so that you can enjoy a good quality of living, stay injury-free, and enjoy the activities you love most.

If you're trying to improve or regain your balance, you need to be performing core and lower-body strength training. If you're not sure where to begin, we've rounded up the best exercises to regain balance after 60, so read on.

1. Dumbbell Goblet Squats

Begin this first exercise by holding a dumbbell to your heart's center while maintaining an upright posture. Keep your core tight, push your hips back, and squat down to parallel. When you hit parallel, push through your heels and hips, flexing your glutes and quads to finish the motion. Perform three to four sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Step-ups start by placing one foot on a sturdy  urface or workout bench. Keep your chest tall and your core tight as you lean into the heel of the front leg, pushing off of it to step onto the surface. Flex your quad and glute at the top of the movement, then, with control, lower yourself before performing another rep. If it's easy with your body weight, you can make it more challenging by holding a pair of dumbbells. Perform three to four sets of 10 reps for each leg.

3.Split Squats

For split squats, assume a staggered stance, placing one foot forward and one foot behind you. Keeping your chest tall, slowly lower down until your back knee touches the ground. Get a solid stretch in the hips of your back leg, then push through your front heel, flexing your quad and glutes. Just like the step-ups, if this exercise doesn't feel very challenging, then you can hold a pair of dumbbells. Perform three to four sets of 10 reps for each leg.

4 Side Plank Hip Lifts

Side plank hip lifts will have you setting yourself up against a wall with your heels, butt, and shoulders touching it. Align your shoulders with your wrists, and stack your feet on top of each other. Keep your core tight and your glutes squeezed as you tilt and flex your hips straight up and down, maintaining tension in your obliques. Perform three to four sets of eight to 10 reps for each side.

5.  Plank to Pushup

The plank to pushup starts out in a forearm plank position with your back and core tight and your glutes squeezed. Push yourself up with one hand, and then finish with the other to get into a pushup. Return to the plank position, and then start the movement with the other arm, alternating between your planks and pushups. Perform three to four sets of three to five reps for each arm.
