Be positive, be happy, wear mask, stay safe

 Hi All

I sincerely pray for everyone's safety and good health. Please don't panic about anything, as getting panic makes things worse. As a cancer survivor and a veteran of 14 major surgeries, I can assure you, that being positive helps. Have faith in God. Remember the day we're born, our destiny is already written by God. So, why worry about it and blame it on other things.

Be happy, keep your body and mind busy doing what gives you all happiness. 

I've made a couple of very cute small mug cake key chains, 2 of owl, earlier made 3 small elephant all given away, made another one, baby octopus. Shall upload it soon.

A simple remedy for low oxygen is, take 2-3 camphor, which we use to do aarti for God, 1 tsp Ajwain/ Omam / carom seeds, make a small packet by putting in a small clean piece of cloth, keep sniffing it every few minutes, your oxygen level will raise. Best for those who have Covid, is lie down proning, i.e., keep 2 pillows near your hip bone, 1-2 under legs, 1 under chin, Lie down on your abdomen, such that your stomach isn't pressed. Lie down for 2 hours like this. As our lungs are at the back, when we lie on our back, they're compressed. Lying on stomach, helps them to breathe easily. Then for 2 hours lie on your right/ left side, then turn to the other side for 2 hours. Do pranayam/ breathing exercise, keep saying your prayers to calm you. Think of those things that give you happiness, Listen to some soothing music.

Be happy, wear mask, stay safe, away from crowd.

'Proning' Is a Promising Treatment for Coronavirus—Here's How It Works

Some doctors on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic are having success treating COVID-19 patients with a simple technique called 'proning.' The term basically means putting a patient in the prone position, or "flat on their belly with their chest and face down, rather than on their back,” Jack Stewart, MD, a pulmonologist with St. Joseph Hospital in Orange County, California, tells Health. 

Proning requires little or no equipment, and the technique may prove to help patients who are critically ill avoid being put on ventilators for breathing assistance. 

Why does proning work? Flipping a patient on their stomach helps respiration because “oxygenation (getting more oxygen into the blood) is easier in the prone position," says Dr. Stewart. It's a function of anatomy, as the human body has more lung tissue in the back of the body than in the front. The coronavirus causes abnormal fluids and secretions to pool toward the back, where there's more lung tissue, and leads to greater interference with lung function.

“When a patient is in the prone position, gravity helps the secretions move downward, so more of the ‘good’ lung is on top and therefore less affected,” Harry Peled, MD, a medical director in critical care at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, California, tells Health.  

Proning is also an effective treatment for a condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a life-threatening complication of coronavirus infection that manifests as shortness of breath and quickly progresses. A study published last month in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that more than 40% of individuals in the study hospitalized for severe and critical COVID-19 developed ARDS—and over 50% of those diagnosed died from the disease.

ARDS poses a risk to patients who have influenza, pneumonia, and pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs from heart disease) as well. “Proning has been used to treat ARDS for a number of years,” says Dr. Stewart. A 2013 study by French doctors published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients suffering from ARDS had a lower risk of death if prone positioning was used in the hospital early on. 

Further research on how proning affects coronavirus patients is needed, but anecdotal evidence shows the effectiveness of the treatment since the global pandemic began.

In the US, a coronavirus patient at Long Island Jewish Hospital managed to avoid needing life support after being put in the prone position, CNN reported. In the UK, a 50-year-old woman with COVID-19 pneumonia who doctors were convinced only had a “couple of hours” to live made a remarkable recovery after medics turned her onto her belly, according to an article written by the patient’s husband for The Times.  

Proning isn’t just being used for patients in critical condition. In fact, new guidance from the UK’s Intensive Care Society, written by doctors and nurses who specialize in intensive care and respiratory medicine, says the technique can reduce the need for invasive ventilation and the chance of death for conscious COVID-19 patients before they reach intensive care. 

“Prone positioning is a simple intervention that can be done in most circumstances, is compatible with all forms of basic respiratory support, and requires little or no equipment in the conscious patient,” states the new guidance. However, the technique is not suitable for all patients, such as morbidly obese people, pregnant women or those with facial injuries.

A team at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is currently conducting a clinical trial to establish whether the prone position is helpful for COVID-19 patients who are not so sick that they need a ventilator to breathe for them, but sick enough to require supplemental oxygen delivered through a tube in their nose. 

Proning does come with some risks, such as pressure sores and dislodging of an endotracheal tube (a flexible plastic tube placed through the mouth and inserted into the windpipe to help a patient breathe), says Dr. Peled. The greatest risk is difficulty performing CPR if a patient goes into cardiac arrest. “It’s crucial to have a highly trained team and organized approach to ensure the procedure is performed safely and efficiently,” he adds.

ARDS is a Common Cause of Death in Critically Ill Coronavirus Patients—Here's Why

The majority of people—about 80% according to research—only suffer mild symptoms with COVID-19. Others may require hospitalization—but for some patients, the new coronavirus can be deadly.

One life-threatening complication that can arise is acute respiratory distress syndrome, commonly referred to as ARDS. And new research from the JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that more than 40% of individuals in the study hospitalized for severe and critical COVID-19 developed ARDS—and over 50% of those diagnosed died from the disease.


What exactly is ARDS?

The American Lung Association (ALA) says ARDS is a rapidly progressive disease that can occur in critically ill patients—most notably now, in those diagnosed with severe illness resulting from coronavirus.

ARDS is sometimes initially diagnosed as pneumonia or pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs from heart disease), and, per the ALA, those with ARDS often have severe shortness of breath, cough, and fever. Fast heart rate and rapid breathing also shows up in ARDS patients, along with chest pain, particularly during inhaling. "ARDS is manifested as rapid and progressive shortness of breath," Shervin Takyar, MD, PhD, a Yale Medicine pulmonologist, tells Health.

The disease can be caused by direct injuries to the lungs (pneumonia, aspiration, near drowning, or smoke inhalation), or indirect injuries to the lungs (sepsis, blood transfusions, or medication reactions). While many still won't develop ARDS even with those injuries, some risk factors—like a smoking history, oxygen use, obesity, and recent chemotherapy—can increase a person's risk of developing the disease.

How is ARDS treated and what are the complications?

In most cases of ARDS, patients will have to be supported by supplemental oxygen and mechanical ventilation soon after the start of their symptoms, says Dr. Takyar. When their blood oxygen levels remain low, patients may be flipped on their stomachs—into a prone position—to get more oxygen into their blood, says the ALA.

Proning is literally turning people over on their bellies, instead of having them on their back on a ventilator, Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, professor of medicine in the infectious diseases division at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, explained during a recent media briefing sponsored by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. "And when you do that in a cycle, you get better oxygenation, and the outcomes are incredible," per Dr. Marrazzo.


In some cases, if inflammation and fluid in the lungs persists, some ARDS patients will develop scarring of the lungs (the fibrotic stage of ARDS). In others, the lung or lungs can eventually pop and deflate, leading to a pneumothorax or a collapsed lung.

According to the American Thoracic Society, the death rate for ARDS shows that it has a mortality rate of 30-40% of those diagnosed with the disease. In those who recover, lung function gradually improves over six months to a year, and even then they're left with significant scarring and lower than normal lung volumes. Those who survive ARDS can also go on to suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD from the impaired quality of life and lung function, Gregory P. Cosgrove, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, tells Health.


How does COVID-19 lead to ARDS?

Similar to many other viruses, coronaviruses—including the novel coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2—can infect and damage the lung cells, setting the stage for the occurrence of ARDS, explains Dr. Takyar. “It is thought that the infection-induced damage and inflammation cause a malfunction of the lung vasculature [the pulmonary vessels within the lungs]," he says. When that happens, the exchange of oxygen within the body is impaired. Among viruses, the ones that cause pneumonia (like COVID-19) are more likely to cause ARDS.

When patients are in the late stages of novel coronavirus infection—after severe damage has already been done to their lungs—their body will try to fight off the virus by sending immune cells to the lungs, which is what ultimately causes the inflammatory reaction, explains Dr. Takyar. In fact, ARDS in coronavirus “seems to be less directly due to the virus itself and more related to inflammation, or the body’s response to the virus,” adds Jaimie Meyer, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious disease specialist. 


While experts are still in the early stages of learning about COVID-19, research surrounding ARDS and coronavirus has found that the two often go hand-in-hand. According to the earlier JAMA study, researchers also concluded that an older age translated to a higher risk factor of developing ARDS and dying, "likely owing to less rigorous immune response," per the study authors. Additionally, the authors noted that if an ARDS patient was running a higher fever, they were more likely to recover, due to the body fighting off the infection.

An alternate study published in January in The Lancet also found that ARDS can develop incredibly quickly in critically ill coronavirus patients. Those researchers found that ARDS developed in 17% of those diagnosed COVID-19, among whom, 11 worsened in a short period of time and died of either ARDS or other serious complications like multiple organ failure.
