IIT-AIIMS Team Builds World's 1st Machine That Kills Coronavirus In Air With Ionised Water

Some of us have turned into extreme germophobes -- avoiding to touch surfaces and constantly washing hands from fears of contracting the novel coronavirus.

Authorities are spraying disinfectants on streets and commonly touched surfaces for preventing the spread of the coronavirus. However, Dr Debayan Saha from IIT Kharagpur and Shashi Ranjan from AIIMS has created a novel device that performs loads better than conventional disinfectant sprays.

The machine is called Airlens Minus Corona and it takes an entirely different approach to nip the novel coronavirus in the bud. The machine looks like a humanoid robot from a movie in the ’60s (very reminiscent of the tin man from the Wizard of Oz).  the machine basically disperses water droplets which are made of ionised water.


This water is ionised with the corona discharge. This water when it comes in contact with COVID-19, it oxidises the viral protein, rendering it not harmful. The machine can be used on the streets with crowded people to sanitise these mass-gathering places efficiently.

PerSapien Innovations

The company is called PerSapien Innovations. According to Sashi Ranjan, “Diving deeper into the scientific research I did at NUS, Singapore, I realized that oxidation is one of the most potent antimicrobial tools which can sterilize the entire city.”

He further added, “Our technology uses an optimal combination of electric energy and water atomization techniques to induce a charge on water droplets while creating the most potent oxidative entities, Hydroxyl radicals that can oxidize and kill the coronavirus.”

Now you might be wondering why do we need this when we already have alcohol-based dispersion systems that are commonly being used. Debayan has an answer to this.

“Alcohols (like ethanol or IPA) are known to inactivate viruses by denaturing their protein coat. But the alcohol-based hand sanitizer is useful for individuals or for sanitizing surfaces at a smaller scale (home, offices, etc.) in the fight against Coronavirus. However, this is insufficient in such an emergency as it is impractical to use alcohol for sanitizing cities.”

New machine can preserve donor livers for 1 week

Researchers in Switzerland have built a perfusion machine that can preserve human livers for transplantation for a week or more, potentially slashing the number of donor livers that must be discarded due to time-related deterioration.

Existing perfusion technology can preserve a donor liver for up to 24 hours.

The team of surgeons, biologists and engineers at University Hospital Zurich said their liver perfusion machine integrates core physiological functions, including automated glucose and oxygen management, waste-product removal and hematocrit control. The research is part of the Wyss Zurich “Liver4Life” project, and the study was published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

The machine continuously moves the liver in an effort to mimic diaphragm oscillations. It is also fully automated, obviating the need for constant presence of personnel. The researchers first tested the machine on pig livers, then on 10 severely injured human livers that had been rejected by all European transplant centers, according to the study. After a seven-day perfusion, six of the human livers were producing bile, synthesizing coagulation factors, maintaining cellular energy and remained intact. They even healed from injuries and inflammation that occurred before or at the beginning of the perfusion process, the study said.

The researchers posited that such long-term perfusion may one day enable:

        Repair of severely fatty livers.
        Lowered odds of organ rejection.
        Chemotherapy that would be too toxic for the rest of a patient’s body.
        Long-distance transportation of organs to improve worldwide organ-sharing and transplantation logistics.
        Liver regeneration, with a donor liver split into several anatomic segments to regrow in the machine.

“Recent surgical procedures have shown that massive liver regeneration in humans can occur within 6 (days) of major tissue loss,” the researchers wrote. “If feasible, such an approach could double or even triple the availability of organs for transplantation. We may also imagine the use of partial grafts for auto-transplantation in patients with liver cancer, obviating the need for immune suppression.

“With further testing to demonstrate its use with injured livers and long-term transplantation success, this machine may provide an avenue for providing more patients with liver grafts,” they concluded.

This machine lets you control your dreams


Researchers have developed a device that acts as an interface to the stage of sleep in which hallucinations occur, allowing people to control the content of their dreams. 

A team created the Dormio device to explore ways to augment a person’s creativity through exploiting the semi-lucid Hypnagogia stage of sleep. The Dormio system works by using a handworn device to track this transitional state through biosignals — such as heart rate and muscle tone. Once the wearer is about to leave Hypnagogia and transition into deep sleep, a bedside robot is triggered to emit a noise to push them back into the dream state.

If the noise used to slightly wake the person is a word, the researchers found that it could enter the Dormio wearer’s dreams. For example, if the robot says “fork” or “rabbit”, the dream will incorporate these objects.

The period of Hypnagogia is characterised by a distorted perception of space and time, as well as a loss of a person’s sense of self that encourages the creation of spontaneous ideas. The idea of prompting creative thought through the mind separating wakefulness and unconsciousness is a concept previously explored by the artist Salvador Dali and the inventor Thomas Edison. 




Both Dali and Edison would access Hypnagogia by falling asleep with a steel ball in their hand, which would crash to the floor while they were in this state of sleep. They would then be able to capture the ideas and thoughts generated through their dreams.



This technique is described by the researchers as “inspiring but limited,” as it does not offer the additional capabilities of the new system that allow people to explore this state of sleep more thoroughly, either by prolonging it or controlling it.

“Good neuroscience, to me, is effective self-examination. Good technology in service of making neuroscience relevant outside the laboratory, then, should facilitate self-examination,” said a research assistant who led the research.

“The ends of this project are both practical and philosophical. I have no doubt that Hypnagogia holds applications for augmenting memory, learning, and creativity. Yet, after exploring the state myself, I find it to be a deeply valuable and inspiring experience.”
