Food items which will not spike your blood sugar

All foods you eat break into glucose. The body requires glucose to perform several tasks. However, basic functions like respiration and growth cannot take place in cells without glucose. The role of allowing glucose to enter cells is carried out by the hormone insulin. If you don't have enough insulin, high glucose levels will continue to circulate in your blood. If the concentration of glucose gradually rises over time, this is referred to as a blood sugar spike. It could happen after eating.

However, we've listed a few items here that won't likely trigger your blood sugar to jump. Here is a list of things you can start with and see how they affect you. If you have a continuous glucose monitor or use other tools to measure your blood sugar, do so.

1. Nuts and seeds

Nuts are low in dietary carbs, high in fibre, and don't significantly affect blood sugar levels. These are a terrific way to add vitamins, fat, and protein to any meal or as a healthy snack.

2. Beans

Beans are high in fibre and give you a longer-lasting feeling of fullness. Although beans, notably black beans, do include carbohydrates, they also have a high level of protein, dietary fibre, and other minerals, giving them a low glycemic index score.

3. Fruits

While starchy fruits (like bananas) and high-sugar fruits like dates may cause a blood-sugar spike, many berries often work well for people. Citrus is a great flavour addition to any dish. Fruits may often be balanced out by adding more fibre (chia seeds or flaxseeds), fat and protein (such as nut butter or full-fat unsweetened yoghurt), and fat. As you learn how your body responds, keep your portions small.

4. Eggs and Dairy

A great source of protein is eggs. Protein-rich meals are essential for controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics since protein does not increase blood sugar levels and can make people feel fuller for longer. When it comes to dairy, fermented items are preferred. Whole-fat and organic products are also ideal. If you use dairy substitutes, stay away from oat milk and sweetened variants.

5. Vegetables

Diabetes patients frequently lack vitamin C and need a lot of vitamins, which these green leafy vegetables may provide. Additionally, green vegetables like spinach, kale, and arugula are rich in fibre and vitamins, minerals, and nutrients like iron and magnesium that help reduce blood sugar. Generally, starchy veggies have the most risk of raising blood sugar.

6. Pasta

In contrast to white bread or potatoes, pasta has a relatively low glycemic index. Because of pasta's extremely high carbohydrate content, many diabetics avoid it. However, pasta can be consumed in moderation when managing a diabetic diet.

7. Meat

A diet plan should include foods that are high in protein. They consist of dairy products, cheese, meats, poultry, and fish. The amount of protein and fat in each of these foods differs.

Special mention: Garlic

Due to bad breath, many individuals tend to avoid eating raw garlic. However, it is well known that garlic extract raises the levels of insulin that are available in diabetics. Thus, it has been observed to lower blood sugar levels.

Tips to control diabetes

- Get daily exercise

- Dietary choices should include high-fibre and low-carb options

- Stay hydrated and drink enough water regularly

Turn your body into a 'fat-burning machine': Dr Michael Mosley's sensational remedy to lose weight

The new Keto diet trend

Even if you are the slightest bit interested in dieting and weight loss, you would have heard about the renowned Keto diet. Following the high-fat, medium-protein, and low-carb eating habits have proven to be beneficial in shedding kilos and coming to shape. In a small time, the diet has taken over the world, with celebrities, trainers and influencers vouching about it. Now weight loss expert Dr Michael Mosley has taken the Keto diet to another level with his new approach.

Dr Mosley, the renowned weight-loss guru, who is credited for the popularity of the 5:2 diet, keto diet, Fast 800 diet, has now come up with a weight loss diet called Fast 800 Keto. This new diet helps to burn fat faster as compared to the traditional method.

Understanding fast 800 Keto diet

This modified version of the keto diet is different from the traditional method, which involved eating high fat and low carb food, to reach the phase of ketosis. This new diet helps to build the foundation for The Very Fast 800 and focuses on reducing the carbohydrates intake to push the body into more consistent nutritional ketosis. It is a three-stage programme, starting with the dieters going into the state of ketosis. The fast 800 diet is recommended for the period of eight weeks, before switching to intermittent fasting, and then following a Mediterranean diet to maintain a healthy weight. Dr Mosley suggests that this method can help people burn fat and lose weight faster.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body starts using fat stored in the body for producing in the absence of enough glucose from carbohydrates. The body first uses the glucose stored in the muscles and liver for producing energy. Once it is exhausted, it turns toward the fat and the body starts burning fat to carry out the daily functioning. Reaching the ketosis phase is essential when following the keto diet to achieve the desired result. According to the new diet trend promoted by Dr Mosley, one can reach the ketosis phase by reducing carb intake and incorporating intermittent fasting in the routine.

How this diet works

Explaining the science behind the diet, Dr Mosley said that our body is designed to run on different fuels: sugar and fat. In an average person, 500 grams worth of sugar and 17 kilos of fat is stored in the liver and muscles. When it comes to producing energy, the body first uses sugar and is most likely to store the fat for rainy days. By cutting daily calories to 800 and slightly reducing carbohydrates intake, the body can start burning fat and lose weight. He termed this process as "flipping the metabolic switch.”

Things to keep in mind

The expert warned that while following this diet trend one needs to be careful as switching can be uncomfortable in the beginning as the body is not used to it. But once the body gets used to it, the process for weight loss will be faster. Two things that need to be kept in mind while following this diet is reaching the ketosis phase and eating at least 60 grams of protein daily.
