Weight loss: Here is why you should add mustard to your diet

When trying to lose weight, you should cut down on your calorie intake. You have to make healthy tweaks in your diet to shed kilos and tone your body. Most people believe that healthy means bland and boiled food. But that is not true. Even healthy food can be tasty, you just have to add the right ingredients.

Mustard seeds are one such ingredient that you can add to your food if you aim to lose weight. The tiny seeds have bold flavours, which keep your taste buds happy and the nutrient content in it help you stay on track. Here is how mustard seeds can help you get in shape.

Mustard seeds and weight loss
As per some research, fibers of mustard seeds are harder to digest, thus requiring more energy and burning more calories in the process. The fiber will also keep you fuller for a longer period of time and will prevent you from over-eating.

Mustard seeds are low in calories, they are packed with antioxidants and are powerful cancer and Alzheimer-fighting agent.

As per another study carried out by the scientists at England's Oxford Polytechnic Institute, eating 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds can boost your metabolism by up to 25 percent for the next 3-4 hours.

Mustard seeds have also been used for medicinal purposes for as long as 6,000 years. The seeds were grounded and applied like ointment to get relief from pain and congestion. Eating some amount of mustard seeds daily also improves your digestion, which is beneficial when trying to lose weight.

Ways to add mustard seeds in your food
Eating mustard alone is not going to make you reach your weight loss goals. You have to add it to a healthy diet to maximize its benefits and lose extra fat from the body. You can add mustard seeds in your curries, salad dressing, and eggs. You can also use small amounts of mustard oil to cook your food.

Doing daily chores can help older women live longer

Completing the chores and errands of daily life may help older women, above the age of 65, in reducing their mortality risk, as older people expend more energy doing the same kinds of activities they did when younger, says a study.

The amount of physical activity older women undergo while performing daily tasks equates to 30 minutes of light physical exercises.

The study, noted that 30 minutes of light physical activity per day lowers the mortality risk by 12 per cent while an additional 30 minutes of moderate activities, such as bicycling at a leisurely pace or brisk walking, reduced the risk by 39 per cent. At the same time, it can also prevent the risk of chronic diseases.

“Every movement counts,” said a researcher.

“A lot of what we do on a daily basis is improving our health, such as walking to the mail box, strolling around the neighborhood, folding clothes and straightening up the house. Activities like these account for more than 55 per cent of how older individuals get their daily activity,” Dr. added.

The researchers followed 6,000 women, aged between 65 to 99 years, for a period of four and a half years. The women were recommended to wear a measuring device called an accelerometer on their hip around-the-clock for seven days while going about their daily activities.

The study found that women do not have to run marathons daily to stay healthy. But the paradigm needs to shift in terms of women staying physically fit.

“Older people expend more energy doing the same kinds of activities they did when younger, so their daily movement has to accommodate for this. Think of it as taking a pill (activity level) at different doses (amounts of time) depending on the age of the patient. It’s not one size fits all,” Dr.  noted.
