Had too much food during the new year party? Try these 5 detox concoctions

As 2021 has begun, we are sure most of you have indulged in too much food, drinks and sugar during the New year's party. After all the celebration and binge eating, now its time to flush out toxins from your body and start afresh for your new goals.

Keeping your system clean and free of toxins is the first step towards being healthy. Detoxing your body on regular intervals not just helps you manage your weight but also has added health benefits. Here are five easy detox concoctions that will help you start afresh.

Apple cinnamon detox water

Healthy recipes hardly ever taste good and this one is no exception. Apple cinnamon water has phytonutrients and antioxidants, which protect you from developing diseases like cancer, hypertension and heart disease. The drink can also boost your metabolism along with clearing your system.

Take one finely chopped apple, take one cinnamon stick and put both in a glass of water. Mix properly and the drink is ready.

Orange carrot ginger detox

Oranges are densely rich in vitamin C, carrots are loaded with beta-carotene and ginger has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Combining the three powerful ingredients makes for a perfect detox drink.

You can simply take one medium-size orange, one carrot and one inch piece of ginger. Put the ingredients in a blender, add half a cup of water and blend well. You can consume the drink without straining for added fibre.

The classic nimbu pani

Lemonade is one detox drink that tastes nice. Lemon helps in keeping your hydrated and provides you with vitamin C. Opt for salt lemonade rather than the sweet one when trying to detox.

Honey lemon ginger tea

Indians and their love for tea need no introduction. A piping hot cup of masala chai (with no milk) is the best drink to provide you warmth in winter and detox your body at the same time. The tea can also treat sore throat and cold. Add honey and lemon after straining the tea.

Chia detox water

Chia seeds are gluten-free and a rich source of calcium. They help in weight loss by suppressing appetite. When added to a glass of water, chia seeds swell up and develop a gel-like consistency. You can try having this drink first thing in the morning to boost your metabolism and cleanse your system.

What happens when you mix black pepper and turmeric

Traditional physicians and naturopathy practitioners would swear by the medicinal properties of natural products and its greater effect on the human body as compared to pills, tablets, syrups and injections. For centuries, mankind has relied on more nature-friendly solutions to cure illnesses, such as herbs and spices. One of the many such natural solutions to battle many problems is a concoction made by mixing black pepper and turmeric.

Both black pepper and turmeric are healthy spices, which are used to enhance the flavour and colour of food. Turmeric has been used as a medicine to treat a variety of problems like rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and dementia . So why add black pepper to an already medicinal food? Curcumin is an ingredient present in turmeric is what is responsible for giving it its medicinal properties. The problem is that curcumin is not absorbed well in the body. This is where black pepper comes in. It contains a compound called piperine, which when combined with turmeric, increases the absorption of curcumin by upto an astonishing 2000%.

There are two theories to explain how piperine helps in increasing the absorption of curcumin. Firstly, piperine slows the breakdown of curcumin by the liver, increasing its blood levels. Secondly, piperine makes it easier for curcumin to pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream. As a result of the combination, the health effects of turmeric get enhanced, making it a more beneficial spice altogether.

Turmeric

So once black pepper and turmeric are combined, what benefits do we get? For starters, the mixture helps with digestion. Curcumin has been shown to have digestive properties, and piperine enhances the activity of digestive enzymes in the stomach, helping the body process food more quickly and easily. Moreover, both black pepper and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties which reduce gut inflammation, which help with digestion.

The mixture can be used as a natural pain reliever. The anti-inflammatory property of both the spices help in desensitizing the pain receptors in the body, which reduce the feeling of pain or discomfort, therefore acting as a substitute for pharmaceutical painkillers. It is most effective when used to ease musculo-skeletal injuries.

Test tube studies have shown that curcumin can not only treat cancer, but can also help in preventing it. It can decrease the chances of cancer by killing cancerous cells and stopping the development of such cells at the molecular level. Even piperine plays a role in killing cancer cells, reducing the risk of tumours. A study showed that both curcumin and piperine worked individually and in sync to interrupt the self renewal process of breast stem cells. This is vital as this process is where breast cancer originates. More studies have linked black pepper and turmeric with having protective effects against other cancers like prostate and pancreatic.

Both black pepper and turmeric contain compounds that offer medicinal properties. When mixed together, they for a sort of potion where the effects of curcumin, the compound present in turmeric, increases manifold. It is a good idea to regularly consume these two spices as part of a healthy diet to reap their benefits.

FDA Grants ‘Breakthrough’ Status to Psilocybin Mushroom Therapy for Untreatable Depression

The US Food and Drug Administration has just granted a “Breakthrough Therapy” designation to a treatment that uses psychedelic mushrooms as a therapy for treatment-resistant depression.

The FDA designates a drug as a Breakthrough Therapy if preliminary clinical evidence shows that it may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapy. Breakthrough Therapies are supported by the FDA throughout the clinical development program to ensure as efficient a process as possible.

The treatment was developed by Compass Pathways, a life sciences company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health.

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, Head of the Psychedelic Research Group at the Imperial College London, said: “In our 2015 study, we provided psilocybin to 19 patients in a clinical setting, coupled with psychological support, and found promising signals of efficacy and safety as treatment for treatment-resistant depression.”

Treatment-resistant depression is a huge unmet need, affecting 100 million people around the world who do not respond to existing treatments. Depression is one of the fastest growing health problems we face today, and mental health disorders are the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. The Breakthrough Therapy designation for psilocybin therapy highlights the importance of supporting early research that can be translated to clinically meaningful outcomes.

“The Breakthrough Therapy designation is a strong endorsement for the potential of psilocybin therapy. We look forward to learning more as further clinical studies are carried out, by our team at Imperial College as well as in Compass’s multi-centre trial,” added Dr. Carhart-Harris.

The approval comes just weeks after researchers from Johns Hopkins researchers published an article calling for psilocybin mushrooms to be reclassified from a schedule I drug—one with no known medical potential—to a schedule IV drug such as prescription sleep aids, but with tighter control.

Studies in animals and humans both show low potential for abuse, the researchers say. When rats push a lever to receive psilocybin, they don’t keep pushing the lever like they do for drugs such as cocaine, alcohol or heroin. When it comes to human studies, people who have used psilocybin typically report using it a few times across their lifetime.

As for safety, studies show it frequently falls at the end of the scales with the least harm to users and society, say the researchers—and there is no known level of possible lethal overdose.

“We should be clear that psilocybin is not without risks of harm, which are greater in recreational than medical settings, but relatively speaking, looking at other drugs both legal and illegal, it comes off as being the least harmful in different surveys and across different countries,” says Dr. Matthew Johnson, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

That being said, researchers don’t recommend releasing psilocybin into patients’ hands even with a prescription. “We believe that the conditions should be tightly controlled and that when taken for a clinical reason, it should be administered in a health care setting monitored by a person trained for that situation,” says Johnson. The researchers foresee that the process for psilocybin use in the clinic would be similar to how an anesthesiologist prescribes and administers a drug, minimizing the potential for abuse or harm.

George Goldsmith, the executive chairman of Compass Pathways, said: “This is great news for patients. We are excited to be taking this work forward with our clinical trial on psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression. The FDA will be working closely with us to expedite the development process and increase the chances of getting this treatment to people suffering with depression as quickly as possible.”

Veterans Are Finding Peace From PTSD Through ‘Float Therapy’

Veterans across the U.S. are finding an extraordinary source of relief from their pain and PTSD thanks to floatation therapy, an alternative treatment for physical and emotional ailments.

’Floating’ consists of laying in a small pool filled with 10 inches of salt water containing roughly 1,000 pounds of magnesium sulfate – or as its more commonly known, Epsom salt. The high levels of salt counteract the effects of gravity, allowing the patient to float gently on top of the bed of water.

The water is heated to around 94.2 degrees Fahrenheit – about the same temperature as the human body – which creates the sensation of being suspended in air.

In the dark sound-free environment, the room, also known as a “sensory deprivation chamber” creates an atmosphere for meditation and deep contemplation, allowing the mind to enter the Theta state, which is the frequency at which the brain operates right before falling into deep sleep.

By depriving patients of sensory information, the experience allows for a safe and therapeutic environment with which veterans can experience significant relaxation—maybe even process past trauma.

Air Force veteran Trey Hearn was so convinced of the benefits of sensory deprivation for veterans, that he and his brother opened up Float Brothers in Destin, Florida. He told Military 1, he sees it as a way for the veteran to feel secure and safe enough to approach the suppressed traumatic events during a sort  “internal counseling session with themselves.”

33-year-old Wesley Hernandez is a veteran who has been undergoing flotation therapy since June in Nashville, Tennessee. He says that it has had a dramatic impact on his health.

“The last time I went, I didn’t even want to get out of the water; it’s an escape from the stress and the drama,” Wesley told Good News Network. “It’s like a deep meditation.”

This 2014 study shows that patients who underwent floatation therapy experienced reductions in blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and physical pain, as well as improvements in sleep quality and optimism.

Wesley’s wife and caregiver Leah told GNN that it’s the best therapy they’ve found, so far.

“Of all the therapies gifted to us by the Wounded Warriors Project, floating has been the one that he seems to want to do over and over.”
