Cupping

Cupping

Cupping

The Concept: Cupping has been around since acupuncture and works on the same basic
principal of improving energy, balance and energy flow. Like massage therapy, cupping is
believed to increase production of pain-killing endorphins, loosen tight muscles, plus
improve blood flow to injured or sore tissues.

The Benefits: Strong clinical trials have been scarce, but when doctors at the Center for
Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine weeded
through 550 studies performed in the last 50 years, they found evidence that cupping
relieved lower back pain and cut fibromyalgia pain by 48 percent.

The Procedure: Cups are placed on the areas to be treated and a partial vacuum is
created using heat or suction to suck up the underlying tissues (you’ll feel a pull, not pain).
If you’re visiting a Chinese healer, each cup will be left in place for five to 15 minutes and
the session cost $50 to $100. At a massage therapist, the cups are glided over the skin
and cost an extra $5 to $15.
