Acupuncture

Acupuncture

The Concept: According to traditional Chinese medicine, illnesses occur when your
body’s energy becomes blocked, instead of flowing smoothly along pathways called
meridians. Acupuncture reportedly breaks up those blockages, allowing energy to flow and
healing to occur.

The Benefits: Acupuncture does a good job of taming headaches, back pain, asthma,
menstrual cramps and chronic muscle pain, plus it can counteract the nausea and
vomiting of patients undergoing chemotherapy and surgery. A study conducted at
Australia’s RMIT University suggests that acupuncture can even reduce allergy flare-ups to
dust, pet dander and other irritants by 76 percent. “Acupuncture stimulates the release of
opiates -- powerful pain-killing hormones -- plus it relaxes muscles, and improves immune
and nervous system function.

The Procedure: The acupuncturist will insert super-thin needles into key acupuncture
points on your skin, then leave them in place for several minutes to an hour or more,
depending upon the problem being treated. Sometimes the needles are twisted or tapped --
or mild electrical currents are passed through them -- in order to ramp up their effect.
A acupuncturists don’t promise this will be pain-free but most people consider it pretty
gentle. Sessions can cost vary, but they’re often covered by insurance. The number of
treatments needed depends on how quickly your health hassle disappears.
