The Concept: Patients take small doses of highly diluted substances (often in the form of
tiny pellets) with the aim of stimulating the body’s natural healing system. The theory is that a
substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can squash those symptoms
if taken in tiny doses.
The Benefits: Advocates say homeopathy treats dozens of health problems. Not all clinical
researchers have been so enthusiastic, but a study at Germany’s University of
Witten/Herdecke confirms that homeopathy can help speed recovery from colds and
influenza, dampen allergy symptoms and help digestive problems, such as diarrhea. “Arnica
is probably the most well-known homeopathic remedy, and it’s phenomenal at preventing
bruising -- even after surgery,”. It can also reduce swelling and inflammation
of muscle strains and bruises.
The Procedure: These remedies are available at health food stores for as little as $8 for 60
tablets. Risks are low because homeopathic remedies are prepared according to FDA
guidelines for strength and purity, and regulated in the same way over-the-counter (OTC)
drugs are.
