The Concept: This unique form of massage focuses on stretching and realigning the
connective tissues that hold muscles, tendons and bones in place.
The Benefits: The goal is to relieve chronic pain by improving the alignment of bones --
and also to improve posture, mobility, and flexibility. Research is still pretty limited, but a
surprising study by physical therapists confirms that just 10 rolfing sessions can reduce
chronic pain by as much as 67 percent, plus increase joint flexibility by 34 percent.
The Procedure: Your rolfing practitioner will apply a slow, firm pressure that feels a lot like
massage (most rolfers are also massage therapists or physical therapists). Appointments
last 75 to 90 minutes and cost varies (the cost is rarely covered by insurance plans). You
can go back as many times as you’d like, but The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration, the
country’s only training school for rolfers, says 10 sessions does the trick for most people.
