Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine

The Concept: Hundreds of herbal remedies are now available in the United States. Herbs
are a key part of India's Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine as well -- two
of the largest medical systems in the world.
The Benefits: Herbal medicine can treat a lot, especially if you choose standardized extracts
-- the preferred form being tested in clinical trials. For starters, researchers in the department
of environmental medicine at Denmark’s Odense University have shown that ginger can
prevent dangerous blood clots as well as -- or better than -- aspirin. And turmeric is such a
powerful anti-inflammatory, it stalls the growth of cancer, helps protect against Alzheimer’s
disease, and can dampen chronic joint pain in as little as one week, say neurologists.

The Procedure: Like homeopathy, herbal medicine is usually do-it-yourself. You’ll find herbs
in health and whole foods stores as standardized extracts, blends, teas, tinctures, dried roots
and leaves. The cost varies widely, depending on what herb and form.
